Gardening expert Sarah Bentham, from Flymo, told Sun Gardening five top tips for clearing your outside space. Remember you can always use the fallen leaves to create Leaf Mulch.

  1. Safety is key.

Before you get started, remember leaf blowers are designed to blow garden debris at very high speed, therefore, protection is needed for your eyes and ears if you are using a loud, powerful petrol blower. Also, if it’s been raining, avoid walking over the slippery surface of wet fallen leaves.

  1. Consider your space.

Next, it’s important to consider the space you’re working with. Keep in mind that removing leaves from a gravel path poses more challenges compared to a long, grassy lawn. Therefore, make sure you plan your route, ensuring that the leaves are blown in a safe direction as a powerful leaf blower or vacuum could potentially harm the look of your garden or even the equipment itself when used on gravel.

  1. Use varying speeds.

Make sure to set your blowing speed to match the requirements of the task. When dealing with harder surfaces, opt for a slower speed to efficiently manage leaves and grass clipping with control. Some leaf blowers produce high noise levels, so show consideration to your neighbours by choosing a quieter setting that can handle the job without causing disruption.

  1. Blow with the wind.

Instead of working against it, blow in the direction of the wind to harness full power to get rid of the leaves without your work being undone. Begin by focusing on the edges of your garden and blow all debris to the centre, reducing the number of leaf piles which will save you time and effort when it comes to collection.

  1. Divide and Conquer.

As you start to blow, divide your garden into sections to make it more manageable. Swiftly remove your leaves by carefully blowing them into a pile in each section and onto a sheet. That way, transporting the fallen foliage to the garden bin or compost heap is easier.
