WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) — An arrest has been made in relation to the death of a 6-week-old child in Washington.
The child’s mother, Briasia Somerville, 21, of Washington, has been charged with first degree murder and felony child abuse. Somerville was also charged with felony child abuse for injuries to a 5-year-old child of hers.
Washington police officers were notified of the death on Sept. 2. The child was treated at ECU Beaufort County and transferred to ECU Medical Center where he later died.
An autopsy confirmed the child died due to injuries consistent with abuse and the death was ruled a homicide. An investigation led to warrants being taken out for the arrest of Somerville.
Somerville was jailed in the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond.
