UPDATE: Emerald Isle officials provide new information on dangerous beach driving conditions caused by erosion

UPDATE (WNCT) – Emerald Isle officials provided new information Sunday on dangerous shelving and erosion that could impact those driving on the beach.

Erosion had caused significant shelf drops greater than two feet in several locations as of early Sunday afternoon, town officials said in a Facebook post. Those locations included:

  • 300-400 block approx. 15 feet from dune’s base
  • 600-700 block approx. 30 feet from dune’s base
  • 900-1000 block approx. 15 feet from dune’s base
  • 1200-1300 block approx. 20-30 feet from dune’s base
  • 1700 block approx. 15 feet from dune’s base
  • 2800 block approx. 15-20 feet from dune’s base
  • 3100-3200 block approx. 15-20 feet from dune’s base
  • 3400 block-approx.-erosion up to posted signage near dune’s base
  • 3800-3900 block-approx. 10-12 feet from dune ‘s base
  • 4200-4400 block-approx. 10-15 feet from dune’s
  • 4700-4800 block-erosion up to dune’s base
  • 5100-5200 block-approx. 30 feet from dune’s base
  • 5500-5800 block-approx. 40-50 feet from dune’s base
  • 6200 block-approx. 40-50 feet from dune’s base
  • 8100 block-sand washed out from dune to ocean
  • 8200 block-sand washed out from dune to ocean
  • 8400 block- sand washed out from dune to ocean
  • 9100 block-approx. 15-20 feet from dune’s base
  • 9400-9500 block-approx. 30-35 feet of dune’s base

Another high tide was slated for 8:08 p.m. Sunday evening.  The high tide and erosion could create dangerous conditions due to narrow driving spaces along the beach.

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Emerald Isle officials warned beach visitors of potentially dangerous shelving and erosion as seasonal beach driving begins Sunday.

In a Facebook post Saturday, officials said shelving and erosion had created drop-offs and narrow driving spaces. The post explained dangerous conditions were exacerbated during times of high tide. 

“Please use extreme caution when driving on the beach to ensure your safety and the safety of others,” the post stated.

The following locations are most problematic due to substantial drop-offs greater than two feet:

3400 block: Approx. 25-30 feet from the dune’s base

3800-3900 block: Approx. 10-12 feet from the dune’s base

9100 block: Approx. 25-30 feet from the dune’s base

9400-9500 block: Approx. 30-35 feet from the dune’s base
