‘Suspicious’ package intercepted, addressed to Colorado Secretary of State’s Office

DENVER (KDVR) — An investigation has been launched into a “suspicious package” addressed to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office that was intercepted at a state mail facility.

The package appears to have contained a white powder and had a return address to the “U.S. Traitor Elimination Army.” The powder appears harmless, according to the preliminary investigation.

According to the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office, the package appears similar to other packages sent to several Secretaries of State around the U.S., including Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, Tennessee, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Massachusetts.

“We cannot tolerate threats to election officials and public servants. These threatening mailings are unacceptable and we must condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms,” said Secretary of State Jena Griswold in a statement.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Colorado State Patrol are investigating the suspicious package.

This is not the first time threatening mail has been addressed to state election offices. In November 2023, letters containing powder laced with fentanyl were sent to at least five state election offices, and in 2022, a mail ballot containing a white powder, later found to be harmless, was returned to a Colorado county during the general election.

The Colorado Secretary of State’s Office oversees elections in the state. There is an upcoming election on Nov. 5 that will decide the next U.S. president.
