Pravin Gordhan created ‘political lie’ of state capture, claims ex-ANC chief whip

Former African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Tony Yengeni says the term state capture was a political lie created by late minister Pravin Gordhan.

Yengeni’s sentiments come as Gordhan who passed away last Friday has been hailed for fighting corruption and state capture.

DID PRAVIN GORDHAN COIN THE TERM ‘STATE CAPTURE’?

Yengeni, who is a staunch Jacob Zuma supporter took to X to dispel state capture.

“Pravin coined the dubious concept of ‘state capture’ An elusive & empty political slogan that does not exist in our legal framework.. Not one person has ever been or will ever be convicted of state capture.. because that thing is a political lie & invention by PG,” he wrote.

Following Gordhan’s passing Ramaphosa also paid tribute saying in the latter years of his service to the nation he stood as a beacon of the fight against corruption.

“Pravin Gordhan stood up to ridicule and threats emanating from some in our nation who were scorched by his insistence that justice be dispensed against those who sought to undermine our democracy and raid our public resources and assets,” the president said.

It was Thuli Madonsela’s ‘State of Capture’ report as Public Protector which revealed the extent of corruption under former president Jacob Zuma’s tenure, but also recommended the establishment of a commission to probe the allegations. The Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture chaired by retired former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo was then formed.

After receiving the fifth and final instalment of the report in June 2022, Ramaphosa said that the state capture report is far more than  a record of widespread corruption, fraud and abuse, but also an instrument through which the country can work to ensure that such events are never allowed to happen again.

DO YOU THINK THE ANC SHOULD TAKE ACTION AGAINST TONY YENGENI FOR HIS SENTIMENTS ABOUT PRAVIN GORDHAN AND STATE CAPTURE?
