Pavement striping project in El Paso and Pueblo Counties

(SOUTHERN COLORADO) — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and its contract partner Road Safe Traffic will begin striping multiple highways in Southern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 22.

CDOT said crews will remove the existing pavement markings and add new striping and markings, to make traveling conditions safer by providing brighter, more visible lines. The project will pause in the winter and is expected to be finished by Spring 2025.

CDOT said the striping will take place on the following highways in El Paso and Pueblo Counties:

El Paso County:

  • CO Highway 21, eastern Colorado Springs (Mile Point 141.74 – MP 154.11)
  • US Highway 24, southeastern Colorado Springs (MP 303.41 – MP 310.87)
  • US Highway 85, from Fountain north toward Colorado Springs (MP 127.77 – MP 137.04)

Pueblo County

  • CO Highway 45, western Pueblo (MP 5.07 – MP 8.56)
  • CO Highway 47, eastern Pueblo (MP 3.00 – MP 4.54)
  • US Highway 50, Pueblo moving east to Avondale (MP 0.00 – MP 16.95)

CDOT said starting on Sept. 22 motorists can expect traffic impacts along work zones from Sunday through Thursday nights from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Various mobile lane closures will take place within work zones with reduced speed. CDOT is urging drivers to plan ahead and expect short delays. Through lanes and turn lanes may be temporarily closed to traffic causing brief delays.

According to CDOT, the work will be a swift-moving, mobile operation and work zones will only be in place for a few hours, however, drivers should use caution, and watch for heavy equipment.

Drivers are advised to not pass the striping truck and cross over fresh paint, as it may damage their vehicle’s finish. Construction schedules could change depending on the weather and advise checking COtrip.org for the latest information.
