Murder suspect held at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin dies in custody

DUBLIN — A murder suspect being held at Santa Rita Jail died while in custody Tuesday, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Steve Addison, 57, of Oakland, died approximately 36 hours after a deputy conducting a routine observation check at 1:50 a.m. Monday noticed Addison struggling to breathe and speak, according to a statement from sheriff’s office spokesperson Sgt. Roberto Morales.

Deputies and members of Wellpath, the sheriff’s office’s custodial medical partner, took Addison by ambulance to a hospital for treatment. Morales said authorities then contacted Addison’s family and made arrangements for them to visit him at a hospital.

According to Morales, Addison had a history of severe medical conditions, and his health continued to deteriorate at the hospital. He died about 1:40 p.m. Thursday.

Addison had been in the jail since Aug. 1, when authorities booked him on suspicion of murder in the fatal July 3 shooting of a man in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, near Ashby Avenue.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office also has been notified, Morales said, and sheriff’s office officials also will submit a report to the California Attorney General’s Office.
