Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Starts Season at 10-0 After Home Win Against Newberry

Head Coach Nicole Barringer has the Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball team rolling. On Tuesday night the Bears took down Newberry 3-0, giving them a record of 10-0. This equals Lenoir-Rhyne’s best start in school history, which came in the form of a 10-0 start in 2009.

The Wolves made it a battle, taking a 14-13 lead midway through the opening set. Lenoir-Rhyne closed on a 12-3 run to take the first set 25-17.

Down 12-11, a Jenna Vogen kill ignited an 8-0 run to put the home side up 19-12. The Bears held on to take the set 25-20, capped off by a big kill from Kathy Peter.

Newberry kept things close in set three, tying it up at 17-17. LR closed on an 8-3 run to stay undefeated.

Kayli Cleaver led with 10 kills and Sydney Karjala with 25 assists. Ella Wimsatt (9) and Sydney Karjala (8) led the team in digs. Averie Dale led with four blocks

The Bears have lost just five sets in 10 games. Lenoir-Rhyne is the only undefeated team left in the SAC and one of just 22 in the country. The Bear’s .287 hitting percentage is their third best all-season. Sydney Karjala leads the team in assists (226) and is second in digs (112).

Lenoir-Rhyne will play host to two teams on Saturday. The Bears face Mars Hill at 1 p.m., and UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m. In between those games will be a match between Mars Hill and UNC Pembroke, which is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
