Q) I’m on a zero-hours contract as a waitress, and while this used to work quite well for me, as it meant I could also pursue my side hustle writing plays, I’m not able to make any real money from my writing at the moment.

I don’t get much enjoyment from working in hospitality (other than the tips at the end of the shift!) and my dream is to do something creative, but I know how competitive creative industries are to get into, especially when I don’t have any experience.

How can I move from serving drinks to getting my dream job?

Soph, via email

A) Since writing is your passion, consider seeking opportunities in creative industries such as theatre, publishing or media.

Even if breaking into these fields seems daunting, there are ways to start building experience.

You could explore roles like production assistant, editorial assistant or social media coordinator, which can provide exposure to a specific industry and help you develop skills.

Starting in an entry-level position can offer valuable learning experiences and a way to network with professionals who share your interests.

Surround yourself with creative individuals for inspiration and the chance to be in the know about opportunities. Consider attending events and workshops or joining local theatre groups or writing clubs.

Don’t be discouraged by the competitive nature of the industry – many successful people in theatre, publishing and the media have faced challenges on their way to success.

Your talent, dedication and strong work ethic are powerful assets, so maintain a positive, proactive mindset.
