Kaizer Chiefs to ditch expensive flop midfielder

Kaizer Chiefs want to ship out one of their recent expensive signings who hasn’t made the grade so far.

Mthethwa isn’t in Nabi’s Kaizer Chiefs’ plans

According to SABC Sport, Chiefs are discussing a loan move with promoted Magesi FC for Sibongiseni Mthethwa. ‘The Ox’ moved to Naturena from Winelands side Stellies exactly a year ago.

“Kaizer Chiefs and Magesi FC are in discussions over a possible loan deal for midfielder Sibongiseni ‘Ox’ Mthethwa before the transfer window closes on Friday night, SABC Sport has been informed. Chiefs are understood to have informed Mthethwa he is surplus to requirements under new coach Nasreddine Nabi and have been offering him to several clubs in the Premier Soccer League.”

The Ox is a confusing case

Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s stats for the 2023-2024 season are curious. He only made 18 appearances in the league but notched up 55 completed tackles, which equates to 3.05 tackles per game. The Ox has the ingredients to boss games from the base of midfield but he needs to show it. It seems the Chiefs staff have given up on the former Stellies man.

Why Appollis would be an expensive signing for Amakhosi

Elias Mokwana, Khanyisa Mayo and Iqraam Rayners are other South African attackers who’ve made big moves either abroad or within the Betway Premiership. Mokwana moved to Esperance for €370k (R7.2 million), Rayners switched to Sundowns for an undisclosed fee although his estimated transfer value now stands at R35 million (evidence of the power Sundowns have over the market) and Mayo is in Algeria with Belouizdad in a deal which cost his new employers €750k (R14.5 million). Now, Mayo’s value according to transfermarkt is double the price that Cape Town City recouped for the striker. Appollis could easily and justifiably fetch a bigger fee than all three.

Can Chiefs even afford him? Take a look at our deep dive into an assessment of the Polokwane and Bafana man’s value.

Kaizer Chiefs finished the 2023-2024 league campaign in tenth position, their worst placing in the history of the DStv Premiership. Their last league title came back in 2015, their most recent piece of major silverware.
