International Red Panda Day is observed every year on the third Saturday of September, which this year will fall on September 21. The day is supposed to bring attention to the conservation of red pandas as they face impending extinction. Red pandas are better known as lesser pandas. They live in the Himalayas and parts of East Asia. Their main diet consists of bamboo, with the red panda being known for its bright red fur, small size, and long, bushy tail.
Red pandas can be found in the high forests of the eastern Himalayas, sharing parts of Nepal, India, Bhutan, and China. These tiny, cute animals spend most of their time in trees and spend their days sleeping, but at night they are active. Special love is given to trees by these animals, but human activities, deforestation, and climate change have greatly reduced their natural habitat. This is a significant factor why the present count of red pandas has dwindled to about less than 10,000 in the entire globe.
The project was initiated by the Red Panda Network in 2010 so that accelerated efforts can be made to save this unique species from extinction. The basic purpose of having Red Panda Day is to make people aware of this endangered species and make them conscious of their conservation.
The main reason for the decline of the population of red pandas is increased human activities to their advantage. Red pandas are attacked primarily for the trees used for nesting, which is the outcome of deforestation, secondly, bamboo is their major source of food supply, and it is in short supply. Poaching and trading is another major issue of this species. Red panda fur is still being sold to make illegal clothes and hats.
Red pandas are famous not only for their beautiful color in the form of red but also for other characteristics that make this species different from the giant panda. This species is as large as a domestic cat. In addition, their long bushy tail gives elongation to their body by 18 inches. They also have a covering of very thick fur that helps them protect themselves against the cold of the Himalayas.
Now in modern times, the conservation of red pandas is of immense importance because apart from having a positive effect on the maintenance of biodiversity, these animals help maintain ecological equilibrium. Unless we take immediate measures for their conservation, this exclusive creature will, in the future, be seen only in books and pictures.
