Every year, on 21st September, all across the globe is celebrated with much grandeur as ‘International Peace Day’. It is referred to as “International Day of Peace” in the English language. The main agenda of this day is to spread the message of peace, non-violence, and harmony.
On this day, people of the world come united against war, violence, and conflicts and vow to work towards peaceful solutions. The only purpose for establishing this day is for promoting peace and create a non-violent society and country.
It was started in the year 1981 by the General Assembly of the United Nations, wherein the General Assembly resolved to observe this day as a symbol of peace and coexistence.
But in 2001, it took an important step when pronounced as a symbolic day of cessation of violence and ceasefire. Earlier this day was being followed on the third Tuesday of September but from 2001, this day was made to be followed permanently every year on 21 September itself.
It is also stated in the Charter of the United Nations that its basic objective is to create peace everywhere in the world and to stop wars. In this regard, the ‘International Day of Peace’ is considered an important event for widespread freedom with the ray of peace and non-violence in the world and inspiring people to construct a peaceful society.
The main purpose of this international day of peace is not to celebrate for a day but to send the message that peace is an ongoing process. All countries, communities, and people have to work together to achieve it.

A new theme for the day is decided each year based on different global issues occurring in the world. The theme fixed for 2024 is “Promoting a Culture of Peace”. This theme will attempt to set up a peaceful environment in all societies.
This involves the importance of peace in stabilizing any given society and country. Peace in society increases the chances for development and a good life since people have more chances at self-development due to peaceful dwelling. International Day of Peace reminds us that we need to work toward peace every day, not just on one day.
