Hickory Man Charged With Failure To Register As Sex Offender

47-year-old Dexter Leon Surratt of Hickory was arrested Saturday (September 14) by authorities in Catawba County. He’s charged with felony failure to register as a sex offender, misdemeanor breaking or entering, and first-degree trespassing.

Surratt is a sex offender as a result of a conviction in Catawba County in 1994 for indecent liberties with a minor. The crime occurred in 1993 when he was 16-years-old. The victim’s age is not listed. Surratt received a three year prison sentence. He initially registered as a sex offender in 1999 out of state.

Surratt has multiple convictions listed in North Carolina dating back to 1994. Most of the convictions were in Catawba County. The most recent conviction was in August of 2017 for habitual felon and failure to register as a sex offender.

Following the arrest, Surratt was incarcerated in the Catawba County Detention Facility under $3,000 bond. A District Court appearance was scheduled today (September 16).
