Hayward robbery suspect’s woes increase after drugs found during jail booking search

PLEASANTON — The legal woes of a man arrested in a Wednesday morning robbery at a Hayward BART station worsened after he was found to have suspected drugs in his wallet while being booked at Santa Rita Jail, according to authorities and court records.

The 40-year-old Hayward man was arrested about 1:50 a.m. Wednesday  by  BART police on suspicion of  hitting a 50-year-old man with a flashlight and stealing his backpack in the bus zone of the Hayward station, authorities said.. The victim declined medical aid and his backpack was recovered.

The suspect was initially arrested for  second degree robbery, assault with a weapon not a firearm and receiving known stolen property, all felonies.

But during the booking process at Santa Rita Jail  several hours later, suspected  methamphetamine and fentanyl were found in his wallet by deputies during intake procedures, according to court records.

The man was formally charged Thursday with  second degree robbery,  assault with a deadly weapon,  bringing drugs into a jail, all felonies, and violating probation.

He is being held without bail at Santa Rita and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
