Anant Chaturdashi takes place on the fourteenth day of Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. This festival is of prime importance in Hinduism, particularly on the tenth and last day of the festival of ten-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi. On this day, the idol of Lord Ganesha is immersed and Lord Vishnu is worshipped. Anant Chaturdashi is also known as Anant Chaudas.
The festival of Ganesh begins with Ganesh Chaturthi and concludes with Anant Chaturdashi. On the same day, Ganesha’s idol is immersed. But a very long story is behind it. Maharishi Ved Vyas was writing the Mahabharata. He prayed to Lord Ganesha to take up this work. Ganesha accepted this work but put a condition that he would stop the work if the pen was stopped. Ved Vyas allowed Ganesha to correct the errors in his prayer and thus the writing of Mahabharata began.
Ganesh ji wrote for ten continuous days, which made his body condition weak due to the covering of mud. This is the reason why Ganesha was underwater at the time of his departure on Anant Chaturdashi as his body became inert due to mud coating. Thus, the immersing is said to be mainly done to console Ganesha’s overexertion and body strain.
Many mythological stories are also associated with the fast of observing Anant Chaturdashi. According to the legend of the Mahabharata period, the time when Pandavas were in exile and were in several problems, Lord Krishna had advised them to observe the fast of Anant Chaturdashi. Because of the effect of this fast, the problems of Pandavas were removed and they obtained victory.
On the day of Anant Chaturdashi, Sushila, the daughter of the Brahmin named Sumant, continued to sit on a fast. Her worship along with the ritual of tying the Anant Sutra gave happiness and prosperity. When her husband put the Anant Sutra in the fire, Lord Anant got angry. After this, Sage Koundinayya repented for his mistake and kept a fast on the day of Anant Chaturdashi for fourteen years. Thus, tying the Anant Sutra and worshiping Lord Vishnu on the day of Anant Chaturdashi brings happiness and prosperity in life.
