Emerald Isle officials warn of dangers as seasonal beach driving begins

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Emerald Isle officials warned beach visitors of potentially dangerous shelving and erosion as seasonal beach driving begins Sunday.

In a Facebook post Saturday, officials said shelving and erosion had created drop-offs and narrow driving spaces. The post explained dangerous conditions were exacerbated during times of high tide.

“Please use extreme caution when driving on the beach to ensure your safety and the safety of others,” the post stated.

The following locations are most problematic due to substantial drop-offs greater than two feet:

3400 block: Approx. 25-30 feet from the dune’s base

3800-3900 block: Approx. 10-12 feet from the dune’s base

9100 block: Approx. 25-30 feet from the dune’s base

9400-9500 block: Approx. 30-35 feet from the dune’s base
