Charlotte Petersen

Charlotte L. Petersen passed away on Sunday, September, 8, 2024 at the Good Samaritan Society of Holstein. 

A funeral mass was held on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Anthon with the Fr. Michael Erpelding officiating.  Burial was at the Mount St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery of Anthon. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Correctionville was in charge of the arrangements.

Charlotte Petersen was born on March 3, 1927, in rural Anthon, the daughter of Cornelius and Gertrude (Rohde) Walling. She was raised in the Anthon area and graduated from Correctionville High School. Following high school, she completed one year of Normal Training after which she taught country school for two years.

She married Leslie Petersen on June 23, 1947, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Anthon.

They made their home in Correctionville and welcomed the start of their family in August of the following year. Over the years, Charlotte not only raised a very active family of six children, she was a business partner with Leslie in the fuel delivery business.

Charlotte was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and served on the women’s church Altar Society. Charlotte loved playing cards where she was a member of Bridge and 500 card groups. She was also very critical of her sons and daughters playing euchre and never hesitated to provide feedback when cards were not played correctly. 

She was an original member of the Correctionville Golf Course Putter Pals and played golf well into her 80’s. Charlotte was a member of the Red Hat Group where she enjoyed the fellowship and outings with the other members. Charlotte loved to garden and tend to her roses. It was not uncommon to find Charlotte mowing her lawn or shoveling snow off of the sidewalk even into her late 80’s. 

She was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren playing sports in addition to supporting the Iowa State Cyclones.

Charlotte loved to travel both throughout the United States and also enjoyed international travel to places such as Malaysia, Italy, Germany, and Thailand.

Survivors include six children; Linda Jacobson and her husband Earl of Denver, CO, Janet Erbe and her husband Bob of Omaha, NE, Barbara Utesch and her husband Kirk of Correctionville, IA, Kenny Petersen and his wife Melanie of Correctionville, IA, Mike Petersen and his wife Debbie of Parkland, FL and Steve Petersen of Libertyville, IL; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister Colette Goettsch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leslie Petersen; six sisters, Margaret White, Kathryn Peter, Corleen Uhl-Anderson, Alice King, Lorraine Warren and Bernadine Walling; three brothers, Donald Walling, Richard Walling and Bill Walling and a daughter-in-law Jennifer Petersen.
