Driver who killed ‘beautiful’ boy, 10, in horror collision after speeding 51mph in 20mph zone jailed

A DRIVER who caused the death of a 10-year-old boy in a horror car crash has been jailed for six years and eight months.

Football-mad Charlie Lowe was hit by a black Ford Kuga – which had been going 51mph in a 20mph zone – in Liverpool on April 20 last year.

Charlie was rushed to hospital but died from his injuries the next day.

The car’s driver Jon Harkins, 35, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and pleaded guilty to the charge.

Harkins, of Scarisbrick Road in Walton, was yesterday sentenced to six years and eight months at Liverpool Crown Court.

Charlie’s devastated family had last year paid tribute to the “exceptionally happy” and “very funny” boy.

In a statement released through Merseyside Police, the family wrote: “Football mad, Charlie was taken away suddenly and we will always miss him.

“He was a huge Liverpool FC fan and knew everything about the team.

“He was also a keen cross-country runner. He was exceptionally happy, very smart and very funny.

“Charlie loved school and loved life and he will be sorely missed by everyone.”

His dad added: “There isn’t a word to describe how amazing and loved you are and how missed you will be. The most beautiful boy in the world.

“When you arrived I had to split my heart between you and your brother Daniel, sister Rachael and brother Bobby.

“I never knew for certain what real love was but I did when my amazing children entered my life.

“I will always cherish the short time I had with you, the hugs and kisses and laughs we had. The days out, you playing football and on FIFA.”

He recalled rushing to the hospital “praying for a miracle” when he heard what had happened, but none came.

The distraught dad concluded: “Charlie, I miss you mate so much it’s killing me inside as it is for your brothers and sister.

“All my love Charlie, I hope you rest in peace, Dad.”

The tragic incident took place at around 4.30pm on 20 April 2023 on Abingdon Road in Walton, Merseyside.

Following Harkins’ sentencing, Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, Lead Investigating Officer from Merseyside Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain very much with Charlie’s family.

“It has been a very difficult period for them as their lives have been changed forever by this incident as they continue to grieve for the loss of their child, and they have been supported throughout this case by a specially trained Family Liaison Officers.

“Harkins drove in excess of the speed limit at 51mph along Abingdon Road which is a 20mph speed limit zone.

“This is a busy residential area at a time children were finishing school, so to drive in such a manner was grossly excessive and inappropriate.”

Detective Sergeant Roper added: “Excess speed devastates lives and causes unimaginable harm to people who become involved in road crashes.

“Charlie’s family and friends have had their lives shattered, but the decisions that Harkins made on that day will have devastating effects on his family.

“No one wants to be involved in such incidents and we must change driving behaviour to reduce that risk of harm.

“Merseyside Police will not tolerate drivers who deliberately ignore the rules of the road and will be relentless in our pursuit of justice when any offences take place.

“We are committed to the prevention of serious injury and road death, to work towards Vision Zero – our strategy focused on driving down the amount of road traffic collisions in our regions and to lower the number of people killed and seriously injured on our streets.

“However, this is something that we must all do in partnership and communities can also take a stand and help us to make the roads safer in the areas that we all live and share.”

Our council house was disgusting when we moved in – but with my cheap hacks I’ve transformed it into a beautiful home

A COUNCIL house tenant who exchanged her home for another one in a different location has revealed her DIY transformation.

A council house exchange, also known as a mutual exchange, is when two or more council or housing association tenants swap homes with each other.

This can be a way to move to a different part of the country or find a home more quickly.

But for one woman, the decorating journey was much bigger for her than expected.

She took to her TikTok page @no.th1rty30 to share her videos of what her house looked like on the first day she moved in and she has since gone viral with over 1.1 million views.

The tenant wrote: “The first day we got our council house exchange!

“It is disgusting.”

The video first started off by showing the front of her house, before then going into the hallway which immediately started off with the stairs.

It was clear to see that the indoor interiors needed a revamp as the wallpaper was peeling off, and the stairs were rugged with no carpet.

The kitchen appeared to be well used with missing cupboard doors and debris on the floor and in the sink.

On closer inspection of the stairs, the video showed that the wood was rotting.

She then went into her bathroom, which appeared to show a toilet with lots of marks all over it.

The bedrooms didn’t have any carpet in them, and the walls needed painting.

The video attracted over 520 comments as many rushed to share their thoughts.

One wrote: “When you swap, you accept the property in its current condition.

“I swapped to a three bed and they had removed all the doors.”

Another added: “I exchanged three weeks ago from a new build, freshly decorated to something similar to this.

“Work in progress.”

A third person expressed their shock by writing: “Can they really give you a house like this?

“I’m waiting on a council house and wouldn’t have the time or money to redecorate it all.”

To which the account replied: “You should be OK with a general council house but house exchanges you take them ‘as seen’ cleanliness is apparently ‘cosmetic want.’”

In another video, she also added: “I just want to show the exact state the house was left in! Now tell me it’s not ‘that bad.’”

However, her home looks a lot different now after she worked hard on transforming it herself.

Her walls have been painted, tiles have been added into her kitchen and flooring has been placed down.

She has decorated her rooms by adding shelves, decorations and furniture.

The council house tenant has been praised for her hard work, with one writing: “What a transformation!”

What It's Really Like Growing Up On A Council Estate

Fabulous reporter, Leanne Hall, recalls what it's like growing up in social housing.

As someone who grew up in a block of flats on a council estate, there are many wild stories I could tell.

From seeing a neighbour throw dog poo at the caretaker for asking them to mow their lawn (best believe they ended up on the Jeremy Kyle show later in life) to blazing rows over packages going missing, I’ve seen it all.

While there were many times things kicked off, I really do believe most of the time it’s because families living on council estates get to know each other so well, they forget they’re neighbours and not family.

Yes, things can go from zero to 100 quickly, but you know no matter what you can rely on your neighbour to borrow some milk or watch all of the kids playing outside.

And if you ask me, it’s much nicer being in a tight community where boundaries can get crossed than never even knowing your neighbour’s name while living on a fancy street.

Angry fans slam ‘ridiculous’ referee after Andre Onana saves Southampton penalty to turn Man Utd clash on its head

FANS have slammed referee Stuart Attwell after he delayed Cameron Archer’s penalty.

The match was level at 0-0 when Diogo Dalot chopped Tyler Dibling down in the box.

Cameron Archer was made to wait before missing his penalty[/caption]

After a VAR check, the spot-kick was given and Archer stepped up for the Saints.

The striker put the ball on the spot but was made to wait 51 seconds before being allowed to take it.

Archer’s shot and rebound were brilliantly saved by Onana.

But Southampton fans are fuming at Attwell for making him wait, with one saying: “Why was there such a huge delay before he could take it?

“It’d been checked, no one was in the box? That was ridiculous, seemed to be the ref deliberately waiting.”
