iPhone owners must prepare their handsets NOW ahead of big free upgrade coming tomorrow – don’t get caught out

IT’S THAT time of year when Apple unveils it’s big annual update: iOS 18.

It’s jam-packed with new features, and will be free to download from September 16.

It is advised to have at least 15GB of storage space to spare on your iPhone to download iOS 18[/caption]

But there are a handful of things iPhone owners must do to prepare their devices for the system overhaul.

Check your device is compatible

First, check that your device is compatible with the update.

Dozens of devices are capable of running iOS 18, check the full list below to see if you’re eligible:

iOS 18 supported devices

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

If your device is not listed, then you will not be able to use iOS 18 and it’s new features.

Update your device

On the day a major iOS update arrives, Apple’s servers can become overloaded, which can make installing it take longer than usual.

Before iOS 18 arrives, it’s wise to update your device to the latest software that is currently available.

This will help make sure that the larger iOS 18 operating system downloads smoothly.

It will also mean your phone is protected against cyber vulnerabilities, as it can be while before the server frenzy dies down.

You may also want to wait a week or so until Apple issues iOS 18.1, which is usually a fix for any bugs that arrive within the first iteration.

Apple
You may want to back up your iPhone using iCloud, or the Finder on a Mac or iTunes on a PC[/caption]

Create extra space

It is advised to have at least 15GB of storage space to spare on your iPhone to download iOS 18.

Iterations of iOS 17 currently take up around 11GB of storage on iPhones, while versions of iOS 16 typically took up 10GB.

If that trajectory is anything to go by, iOS 18 is likely to be 12GB or above.

If you don’t have enough storage, you should try and make some room.

You can do this a number of ways, such as deleting or offloading unused appsaxing downloaded content or shafting more images and videos onto iCloud.

Back up your iPhone

You may want to back up your iPhone using iCloud, or the Finder on a Mac or iTunes on a PC.

Previously, people have complained that they lost data like old text messages and photos during an update.

The Sun has detailed how you can back up your iPhone prior to an iOS update here.

a phone screen that says automatic updates on it
Apple
You can set up you iPhone so that it updates automatically overnight while it’s charging[/caption]

Check your battery

Right before you hit that download button, you want to ensure your iPhone has enough battery to install the software properly.

If your battery dies while updating critical parts of iOS 18, it may well brick your iPhone.

Bricking is when an electronic device becomes completely unresponsive and can’t function.

Fortunately, most devices take about 30 minutes to update – so you don’t need masses of charge.

You can set up you iPhone so that it updates automatically overnight while it’s charging.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Tap Automatic Updates, then turn on Download iOS Updates.
  3. Turn on Install iOS Updates. Your device will be updated automatically to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Some updates may need to be installed manually.

iPhone tricks to try today

Here are some of the best...

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
  • Delete lots of photos quickly – Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of your Home screen, then tap in the bar and type a currency (like €200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
  • Check if you’re due a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you’re down to 80% capacity. If you’re below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
  • Move apps around faster – Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier

Georgia attended a VIP launch event in Knightsbridge, London, for a brand-new kids’ toy yesterday.

The star looked comfortable and chic in black leggings, a long top, and a cozy knit cardigan.

She attended the event with her three-year-old son, Brody, and caught up with Towie legend Amy Childs, who came down with her kids.

Amy was one of the original TOWIE stars who rose to fame when the show first aired in 2010.

Although Amy, 34, left after two series, she returned in 2020 and recently revealed her desire to still be filming for the ITVBe series in ten years.

Georgia and Tommy, on the other hand, left TOWIE in 2021 and were subsequently given their own reality show, Baby Steps.

The show offers viewers a glimpse into their relationship and their lives as parents to their toddler son, Brody.

Tommy and Georgia attended the NTA’s earlier this week.

Georgia wore a stunning pink velvet bodycon dress with a sleeveless, turtleneck design and a scarf-like drape.

She showcased her growing bump by gently cradling it in some of the photos as she posed at the NTAs.

Georgia styled her blonde hair in large, bouncy curls and completed her look with full glam makeup.

She shared some of the stunning snaps on Instagram, captioning it: “It took a village.”

Fans were quick to shower the star with compliments with one writing: “Wow! You look beautiful Georgia!”

Another added: “Love the dress & You look great.”

“You look beautiful and radiant,” penned a third.

And a fourth wrote: “That’s a lovely, & beautiful bump.”

Georgia and husband Tommy secretly got married last year.

Back in May, Georgia and Tommy revealed the happy news that they are expecting their second child after their heartbreaking miscarriage.

They revealed that they had undergone IVF to have a little girl, who will be born at the end of this year.

Prince Harry to accept £8m inheritance despite not being working royal – Meghan’s ‘desperate’ for the cash, experts say

PRINCE Harry will accept an £8million inheritance despite not being a working royal – with an expert claiming Meghan is “desperate” for the cash.

Before her death, Harry’s great-gran the Queen Mother arranged for him to get the trust fund payment on his 40th birthday.

Harry got a 40th birthday message from Kate and William’s account this morning[/caption]

That milestone falls today – and Harry is reportedly set to accept the cash sum despite no longer being a working royal.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold told the New York Post: “I’ve no doubt that Harry will accept it.

“It’s money that’s owed to him, money that’s coming to him. I don’t think he will decline the money.

“It’s inheritance so it’s his right. It’s already something that has been set in place for years now.”

The Queen Mother put aside a tax-free £19million trust fund in 1994 to leave to her great-grandchildren.

Her bequest was divided into two installments – one payment when the royals turned 21, and another on their 40th.

Royal expert Hugo Vickers said the timing couldn’t be better for Harry and Meghan.

Vickers told The Sun: “No doubt it would be helpful because I think he leads a very expensive lifestyle.

“Hopefully he will put the money to good use. £8million can disappear pretty fast in a place like Montecito.

“The couple have an enormous staff, a big house to maintain, and cars.

“Harry has to pay for his own security too which we know he takes very seriously.”

Harry got a surprise 40th birthday message from Kate and William’s account this morning – in a hint of an olive branch after their feud.

Posting on Instagram, William and Kate’s account said: “Wishing a Happy 40th Birthday to The Duke of Sussex.”

The official account shared a snap of California-based Harry smiling in a grey suit and white shirt.

But the post was not signed off with William or Kate’s initials, as is normally the case for posts they write themselves.

The Royal Family’s account shared the same snap, saying: “Wishing the Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!”

It is the first time the royal family has shared a public message for Harry since wishing him a happy birthday in 2021.

Last year the royals declined to publicly celebrate Harry’s 39th birthday.

Harry was heard admitting he hadn’t heard from his family when asked by a well-wisher at the 2023 Invictus Games in Germany.

The royals’ silence came after Harry released his memoir Spare, which blasted his entire family – including William, Kate and Camilla.

This year prince is marking his 40th birthday with family and friends at his £11million mansion in California.

He will then jet off for a “weekend getaway” with a few close friends, The Sun revealed this week.

It is not yet known where Harry will go or who will join him on the trip.

But the group is unlikely to include his brother William – as he and Harry have not spoken for more than two years.

And Harry’s wife Meghan and children Archie and Lilibet will stay at home while he heads off with his mates.

The band of brothers could include Harry’s polo BFF, his “second dad” and a “party animal” pal.

Harry is reportedly asking former aides to help him plan a comeback from his US exile and spend more time in Britain.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, is said to be consulting people “from his old life” after growing frustrated with American PR experts.

Harry reportedly plans to spend more time in the UK in a bid to repair his relationship with King Charles.

The strategy could see a “rehabilitated” Harry stage a partial return to royal life.

But insiders said Harry and Meghan are not seeking a permanent return from California.

A source told the Mail: “Harry is turning away from all sorts of Hollywood publicists and is seeking counsel from his old friends and associates.

“He is clearly reaching out thinking, ‘I need to do something different because what I’m doing is clearly not working’.”

The source added: “In short, Prince Harry is rethinking the way he operates.”

Harry has reportedly sent WhatsApp messages to a number of old friends in the UK.

The prince’s former private secretary Edward Lane Fox has reportedly been tipped to plot a comeback.

But Lane Fox said: “It’s not something I’ve got a view on I’m afraid.”

Harry has reportedly decided not to update his memoir Spare for its paperback edition, which is due to come out on October 24.

He will not be doing any interviews to promote the paperback, it is understood.

Friends are said to believe Harry’s comeback could succeed if it staged with zero publicity or “fuss”.

It is feared that Harry’s relationship with his brother William is beyond repair.

But King Charles is reportedly open to spending more time with his son.

It comes after The Sun revealed William and Harry stood “virtually back to back” at their uncle’s memorial service.

Harry secretly dashed from his US home to the service for Lord Robert Fellowes, who was married to Princess Diana’s sister Jane.

But the Duke of Sussex and his brother did not exchange a word at Thursday’s memorial in the Norfolk village of Snettisham.

One mourner told The Sun: “They were only five yards from each other.”

William and Harry chatted to mourners as they mingled at their uncle’s memorial service.

At one point the princes were standing “virtually back to back” at the wake.

But both left separately without seemingly exchanging a word, onlookers said.

The Sun revealed Harry jetted in secret from the US after previously saying he could not attend due to security fears.

Watch bizarre moment Sean O’Malley is KISSED mid-fight by Dvalshvili before losing belt at UFC 306 show at Vegas Sphere

SEAN O’MALLEY went into UFC 306 expecting to defend a flurry of punches and takedown attempts from Merab Dvalishvili.

But he didn’t expect to receive a bunch of KISSES from the Georgian gladiator midway through their historic Sin City Sphere showdown early this morning.

But he made the mistake of letting go his submission after his smooches[/caption]

O’Malley looked to make his second defence of the men’s bantamweight title in the showpiece bout at Vegas’ brand-spanking new venue.

But his reign as king of the 135-pounders came to a gruelling end as Dvalishvili outworked him for three of the five rounds to earn a unanimous decision victory.

Tensions were high throughout the build-up to the bantamweight war.

And you could cut it with a knife in the early exchanges of the fight.

It wasn’t long before relentless cardio and takedown machine Dvalishvili began dictating the pace and taking O’Malley down at will.

The biggest fight of the Tbilisi titan’s career soon became one of his most enjoyable, a fact he showed late in the second round.

With seconds of the stanza remaining and O’Malley in a guillotine, Dvalishvili repeatedly KISSED the back of the champion’s neck before letting go of the submission after thinking the horn had gone.

A visibly frustrated O’Malley leapt to his feet and landed two right hands on the retreating challenger, who ended up being told off by referee Herb Dean.

MMA fans couldn’t quite believe their eyes, with one writing on X: “The level of disrespect SHM.”

Another said: “Kid got humiliated.”

And another said: “Merab is a real clown.”

One remarked: “Sean was more upset about getting kissed than anything else.”

Another chimed in: “Spread love and get hits at the back.”

Dvalishvili’s mid-fight smooching of O’Malley also baffled UFC President and CEO Dana White.

The 55-year-old said in the post-fight press conference: “The kissing on the back and standing and walking away right before the bell.

“I have no idea [why he did that].

“Merab does some s**t. You know what I mean? It was weird but not shocking.”

Merab Dvalishvili was overcome with emotion after fulfilling his dream of winning UFC gold[/caption]

When asked to explain why he kissed O’Malley, Dvalishvili, 33, said: “Yeah, so I grabbed his neck, and then he had 10 seconds left.

“And I know he can wait – he’s not going to go to sleep or tap, and I wanted to make just a little fun of him you know.

“I don’t hate the guy, just make fun of him but at the same time give him a little kiss to show that I’m dominating, I control this fight, I break you..

“That’s why I was kissing. But I had too much fun there, and I guess I lost the time control.

“But when I let go he followed me, and he punched the back of my head and I started protecting myself again.

“And I said, ‘Referee, I’m sorry referee, I’m sorry!’”

Victory over O’Malley saw Dvalishvili become the UFC’s second Georgian-born champion, seven months after his compatriot Ilia Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to claim featherweight gold.

Three motors that look ‘incredibly good’ for under £5,000 – including little-known sports car loved my Richard Hammond

A CAR expert has picked out a handful of good looking motors that can be bought for £5,000 or under.

That includes a sporty coupe that is a known favourite of Top Gear legend Richard Hammond.

Few cars match the Brera in looks[/caption]

Motoring guru Jonny Brighton of the YouTube channel Cars With JB has given petrolheads his top choices for cars “that look insanely good” on a budget.

His picks include the stunning Alfa Romeo Brera, a hatchback coupe designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro – the designer behind the likes of the VW Golf, BMW M1 and even the DMC DeLorean.

Jonny said: “Even the name ‘Brera’ is synonymous with beauty as it’s named after an area in Milan known for its art.”

On the cars looks, he added: “These are beautiful looking cars that really stand out on the roads – even more so in ‘Alfa red’.”

Jonny claims these can be bought for as little as £2,000, with £5,000 enough for a 2006 model with 80,000 miles on the clock.

Petrolheads may be drawn to a rival of the Audi TT – the seldom seen Peugeot RCZ.

It’s a favourite of celebrity gearhead Richard Hammond, who described the 133 mph motor as “actually as fast as it looks.”

Back in 2010, Hammond wrote: “This more powerful version is as different from the standard car as would be an RCZ fitted with a one-cylinder diesel engine from a dumper truck that you started with a handle.

“This car looks just as sexy as the less powerful RCZ and is indeed considerably faster.”

Speaking about the RCZ, Jonny said: “They’re kind of like a cheap fast hot hatchback that looks like a sports car.

“I wouldn’t say the interiors are particularly pretty but outside they are quite striking, with that double-bubble roof being reminiscent of race cars.”

A third motor picked out by Jonny is the Renault Megane RS – specifically the second-gen model.

Describing it as “a lovely aggressive coupe-style hot hatch”, the Megane RS can hit 0-60 mph in just 5.8 seconds thanks to its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.

Jonny added: “It’s not just great looking, it’s absolutely focused on performance with serious features like the Brembo brakes, actually operable splitter and diffuser, and of course the analog rev-counter to help with shifting while out on track.”

Like the other two cars mentioned, these can be bought for under £5,000 – with Jonny tracking one down for £4,700.

Elsewhere, petrolheads can pick up a luxury sports saloon with the same speed as a BMW M3 for under £5,000.

And an electronics giant known for their television sets has revealed a bizarre EV campervan that’s like a luxury lounge on wheels.

I was playing armchair detective – then I found out the horrific secret which had haunted my family for decades

WHEN Anna Allan decided to trace her family tree, the last thing she expected to uncover was a shocking family secret.

Days after joining the site Ancestry.com, Anna, from Bridgwater, Somerset, was stunned to discover her aunt, Patricia Cupit, had been murdered on her way to school when she was just six.

What she discovered was that her aunt Patricia Cupit was murdered on the way to school at the age of 6[/caption]

After teaming up with a historian who delved deeper into Pat’s case, Anna has uncovered the full story of what happened to her aunt.

Anna, 56, said: “I started looking into my family tree because I didn’t know much about my mum’s side of the family.

“My parents split when I was four and I had limited contact with my mum.

“I was absolutely devastated to find out what happened to my aunt – I cried while reading her story.

“Now, I’m determined to keep her memory alive.”

Anna was soon contacted by another family member, who revealed Anna’s aunt, Patricia Cupit, had been murdered in the 1940s by a soldier.

She googled Pat’s name, and discovered a website dedicated to ‘Little Pat’ – run by local historian Darren Norton.

Darren, from Brandon, Suffolk, had come across Pat’s story, and has spent more than 20 years painstaking researching what really happened.

He said: “I was amazed that I’d never come across the story before and I couldn’t believe it wasn’t better documented.

“My own child was about the same age as Pat, so it really hit home for me.

“The more I found out, the more I was determined to uncover what really happened to Pat.

“It was amazing to hear from Anna and have her help uncovering the story.”

Born in October 1935, Patricia Cupit was doted on by her parents, Leonard, who was in the RAF, and Anne, a housewife, and had a happy life at their home in Mitcham, South West London.

When war broke out in 1939, Pat was evacuated to live with her parents’ friends, Albert and Flo Pask, in the tiny hamlet of Riddlesworth, Norfolk.

On Tuesday, May 5, 1942, Little Pat was walking the mile from her home to the local school, when she was spotted by Private James Wyeth, working at a nearby army camp.

He had a violent past, with previous convictions for assaulting two women, and was serving a sentence at Borstal when he was recruited for the army.

He had never seen Pat before, but would later tell police he felt compelled to follow her.

When Pat failed to come home from school, her panicked foster parents started frantically searching, before eventually discovering her bloodied body lying underneath a tree.

Police quickly focused on Wyeth as a suspect, after other soldiers said he had disappeared from camp and come back looking flushed and red-faced.

He initially told cops he had taken a detour to collect a newspaper, spoken to a colleague, then read the paper for 30 minutes – but he eventually confessed to stabbing and strangling Pat.

What’s the easiest way to research family history?

How do I research my family tree online?

There are several websites that will guide you through building your family tree.

The biggest in the UK is Ancestry.co.uk, which has 2.4million paying subscribers.

Other services, including genealogy.com, genesreunited.co.uk and findmypast.co.uk, are also available.

How does it work?

You’ll need some basic information to get started including the names, birthplaces and dates of birth for parents and grandparents.

But, quickly sites will begin to help you put the pieces together by searching census, military, parish, passenger and even criminal records.

Ancestry.co.uk highlights records of people likely to be related to you for you check and, if correct, add to your tree.

The information you find is organised on an easy to naviagte family tree – with documents stored to the relevant relative.

Ancestry has more than 18 billion records worldwide, which have helped create more than 80 million family trees.

Wyeth was sentenced to hang for Pat’s murder, although the Home Office later revoked his sentence on the grounds of insanity, and he was sent to Broadmoor secure unit, until his death in 1983.

Although Pat’s parents went on to have another daughter after the war – Anna’s mother – the trauma took its toll on her mother, and she was regularly taken home by police after being found in the middle of the night, wandering the graveyard in her nightdress.

Anna added: “I can see why the family didn’t talk about what happened for so long.

“But now I know about Pat, I think it’s important that we commemorate her life.

“I discovered there was no headstone where she is buried, in Streatham cemetery, so I arranged for one to be put in this summer.

Anna and Darren now plan to hold a small commemoration for Pat at the cemetery in October this year, on what would have been Pat’s 90th birthday.

Anna said: “In a way, I owe my life to Pat’s death. If she hadn’t been murdered, her parents probably wouldn’t have had another child and I probably would have never been born.

“That makes it even more important to me that she is never forgotten.”

B&M shoppers rushing to buy household essential scanning for 10p instead of £3

B&M shoppers can’t get enough of a kitchen essential scanning for just 10p instead of £2.99.

The bargain retailer is selling a stainless steel slotted turner that’s ideal for flipping eggs or burgers.

EXTREME COUPONING AND BARGAINS UK FACEBOOK GROUP
A shopper recently spotted a spatula on sale for just 10p at their local B&M store[/caption]

One shopper spotted the nifty gadget in their local B&M, posting a photo of it with a receipt on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook page.

They said: “Had a feeling this would be 10p as others next to it was £3.50 and this one said 2.99 so probably old stock.”

The post has notched up dozens of likes and comments from shoppers keen to bag one of the spatulas.

One, who missed out on the deal, revealed: “Was literally looking at this last weekend and put it back because of the price.”

If you’re looking to snap up one of the slotted turners, the shopper who posted on the Extreme Couponing Facebook page said there were around five left at the Danum Retail Park Doncaster branch she found hers at.

If you don’t live near there it might be worth calling your local branch to see if they have the spatula and if any are on sale for 10p.

You can find your local B&M branch by using the discounter’s store locator tool on its website.

In any case, remember to always shop around when buying something like this as you might find it cheaper elsewhere.

Websites like Trolley and Price Spy let you compare prices on thousands of items across online retailers.

Meanwhile, the Google Shopping/Product tab lets you scan the internet to see how much different online retailers are selling a particular item for.

We had a look online to see if any other retailers are selling a stainless steel slotted turner for less than 10p, however none are.

The next cheapest option is Dunelm which has one for £2 while Robert Dyas is selling one for £6.99, and that’s before factoring in delivery charges.

How to find 10p bargains at B&M

If you’re the type of shopper to never find 10p bargains at B&M, there might be a reason why you’re missing out – you’ve not downloaded the retailer’s scanner app.

The B&M scanner app can be downloaded for free on to your smartphone via the Apple App Store or Google Play.

The app has a barcode price check feature that lets you scan products in store to find out their true price which is sometimes cheaper than the price label says.

The app also offers you a description of the product you are scanning.

Shoppers have been known to find products for as little as 10p by using the app which takes just minutes to download.

How else to save money at B&M

According to one ex-B&M manager, you’ll want to visit your local branch at 10am on a Wednesday.

This is when staff slash items to as little as 10p to clear excess stock and make way for new products.

Keep an eye out for red sticker products as well, according to deals expert Tom Church.

These are put on special buy products that have also been reduced in price.

It’s worth signing up to Facebook pages dedicated to hunting for bargains from B&M and other discounters too.

Some of the best ones to join are B&M Bargains, Extreme Money Saving Deals and More and Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group.

How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.
