Strictly professional opens up about suffering ‘deep depression’ after being axed from the show

FORMER Strictly Come Dancing professional Cameron Lombard has opened up about his mental health struggles after leaving the BBC show.

Cameron, who made his final Strictly appearance in 2022, has admitted he fell into a “deep depression” after leaving the series.

Professional dancer Cameron appeared in 49 episodes of the BBC show between 2021 and 2022.

He announced his departure the following year, in April 2023, revealing he was leaving the show to pursue other “exciting” projects.

Taking to Instagram, he said “the last two years have been a blast,” while thanking the Strictly team “for the life-changing opportunity and for the best experience anyone could wish for.”

“[I] will forever be grateful and I’ve loved every minute, danced on the world’s biggest stages, met the world’s best fans, performed for thousands of people as well as millions watching around the world and have made friends for life that I’ll cherish forever,” he continued, before adding that he would update fans about “exciting future projects,” when the time was right.

However, Cameron has now up about his life away from Strictly, admitting that he fell into a “deep depression” after being axed from the show.

“A year ago, my world shifted when I didn’t make the Strictly Come Dancing lineup. What followed was a battle with deep depression, trying to fill the emptiness that success once occupied,” he wrote on social media.

Cameron quickly added that he’s reflecting back on this time from a much stronger place.

“In that darkness, I found my true strength,“ he said. “Setbacks don’t break us—they shape us.”

He continued: “With the unwavering love and support from my wife, my incredible family and a fire inside me that will never die, I’m entering a new chapter.”

Cameron went on to reveal that he’s undertaking an exciting move to the United States where new opportunities await.

He explained: “Moving to Miami isn’t just a move – it’s a rebirth. Here, I will not just dance; I will create, inspire, and leave a mark that can’t be erased.”

“To those who believed in me, you were my anchor. To the doubters, you make me laugh on the toughest of nights.

“This journey has tested me, but every fall has only made me rise higher.

Cameron called the move a “personal triumph,” added: “My journey has been one of highs and lows, but every step has led me to this moment.

Strictly 2024 pairings

Here's who is matched with who this series...

“A moment filled with possibility, with life, with passion. The best is yet to come—not just for me, but for anyone who’s ever been knocked down. We rise, we conquer, and we thrive. Together, let’s dance through life with passion, resilience, and an unyielding belief in our dreams,” he added.

When Cameron’s exit from Strictly was announced, it was not clear he’d been axed from the series.

At the time a BBC spokesperson said: “Cameron is a fantastic performer, and we have loved working with him for the past two years on Strictly.

“He is currently pursuing other opportunities, but will always be a part of the family and our door will always be open to him in the future.”

However, it seems Cameron has closed that door, at least for the time being, as he purses new opportunities in Miami.

Meanwhile, the BBC dance competition show’s latest series has a full roster of professional dancers and an impressive line-up of celebs including Pete Wicks, Tasha Ghouri, Dr Punam Krishan, Sam Quek MBE, and JB Gill.

The series returned to screens on Saturday evening in the wake of the Strictly scandal and investigation into allegations of abuse by former pro dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima.

Surge in cases of deadly ‘brain-invading’ bug across UK prompts urgent calls to protect children from ‘critical threat’

BRITS have been urged to ensure they are fully vaccinated against meningitis amid concerns over a “recent surge” of cases in England.

The charity Meningitis Now also called on members of the public to educate themselves on the signs and symptoms of the illness, and to “act swiftly” if meningitis is suspected.

Cases of the deadly bug tend to rise in September, as the new academic term begins[/caption] a list of common symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia in babies children and young people

Meningitis is an infection in the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites.

Symptoms include headaches, vomiting, stiffness in the neck, fever and a sensitivity to light.

The warning from Meningitis Now comes after UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) figures published last month showed a rise in invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases in England.

IMD is a bacterial infection that can cause meningitis and septicaemia, with symptoms sometimes worsening rapidly.

According to the UKHSA, there were 396 lab-confirmed cases of IMD in 2022/23 compared with 205 cases in 2021/22.

Based on Office for National Statistics (ONS) death registrations, there were 33 deaths out of the 396 cases.

It comes after IMD cases fell by 83 per cent in 2020/21 due to Covid-19 pandemic restrictions.

Dr Tom Nutt, chief executive at Meningitis Now, said: “While the decrease in cases during the pandemic provided some respite, this recent surge is a clear reminder that meningitis remains a critical health threat.

“We want to stress the importance of vigilance and vaccination. We urge everyone, particularly those in unvaccinated age groups, to familiarise themselves with the symptoms and to act swiftly if they suspect meningitis.”

Julia Evans, 53, from Aberbargoed in South Wales, was diagnosed with viral meningitis just before Christmas 2019.

She was concerned when she started to see flashes of light while driving to work.

“I thought it was an aura and I was having a migraine,” Ms Evans said. “At work I took some paracetamol, but my headache was getting worse and every time I tried to stand up it felt like there was an elephant on my head.”

After losing her vision, colleagues called 111, who sent paramedics. By then, Ms Evans’ fever was 41.9C.

“They put me on a drip immediately and sent for an ambulance. By the time it turned up all my senses were being affected,” she added.

“The consultant came to see me and within five minutes he told me he thought I had meningitis.

“And I remember thinking, no, I can’t be – I thought meningitis was something that only happens to younger people.”

We usually see increases in cases of meningococcal meningitis after the university term starts in September

Dr Shamez LadhaniUK Health Security Agency

As a result of the infection, Ms Evans has problems with her eyesight and hearing, and relies on a walking stick or wheelchair.

“I still have lots of hospital appointments,” she said. “Meningitis damaged my eyesight.

“I lost hearing in my right ear, I now have to use a walking stick or a wheelchair, I have weakness down the entire right side of my body and I have trouble with body pain, headaches and insomnia.

“I also have some nerve damage in my spine because of the lumbar puncture.

“That’s the thing that I’ve learned over the years, any sort of damage to the brain can affect every single part of your body.

“It’s just a new life. When something like this happens to you, when you’re left with numerous disabilities – you just have to find a new way of living.”

Dr Shamez Ladhani, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA, said: “We usually see increases in cases of meningococcal meningitis after the university term starts in September.

“New and returning students from around the country and overseas coming together and mixing means infection spreads easily, with some students becoming seriously ill and tragically in some cases, we see deaths.

“I urge young people starting or returning to university to check they’re up to date on their MenACWY, HPV and MMR jabs and to contact their GP if unsure.”

The MenACWY jab is typically offered in year 9 or 10 to children aged 13-15 as protection against serious infections like meningitis and septicaemia, which can be deadly.

The jab is also available to anyone who missed the vaccine up to their 25th birthday.

What are the symptoms of meningitis?

The symptoms of meningitis develop suddenly and include:

  • A high fever over 37.5 degrees – the average human temperature
  • Being sick
  • A headache
  • A blotchy rash that doesn’t fade when a glass is rolled over it
  • Stiffness, especially in the neck
  • Sensitivity to bright lights
  • Drowsiness, irritability or lack of energy
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Seizures

The classic rash associated with meningitis usually looks like small, red pinpricks at first.

But it will spread over the body and turn into red or purple blotches.

If you press the side of a glass firmly against the skin where the rash is and it does not fade, it is a sign of blood poisoning and you should get medical help immediately.

The Meningitis Research Foundation has warned the symptoms can easily be mistaken for a hangover.

The charity urged people to look out for the symptoms in family and friends during winter when the illness is more prevalent.

Fans were heartbroken as The Grand Tour concluded earlier this month[/caption]

During the trio’s final road trip, titled “One for the Road”, Jeremy revealed a reason for wanting to wrap up the show: his disinterest in reviewing electric cars because they are “s**t”.

Previously, the 64-year-old penned in The Sunday Times: “After 36 years of talking about cars on television, I’m packing it in, because I’m too old and too fat to get into the cars I like and not interested in driving those I don’t.”

At a screening for the final Grand Tour episode, the star admitted: “It gets you tonight, it is the end. It didn’t at the end of filming.

“We said three years ago we would do one more then end it.

“We had driven cars higher and faster than anyone else so we did wonder what else we could do with a car.

“We had run out of places to go, we had run out of things to do. And I had got fat.”

Having launched in 2016, The Grand Tour began after its three stars departed BBC hit Top Gear.

A total of five series aired on Prime Video, with the finale being billed as the sole episode of series six. It saw the hosts travel to Zimbabwe in their dream cars.

In addition to Jeremy, Richard and James, executive producer Andy Wilman also made the jump to The Grand Tour.

Meanwhile, Jeremy previously opened up about his other show, Clarkson’s Farm, affected his goodbye to his longtime collaborators.

Also on Prime Video the series follows Jeremy’s experiences running Diddly Squat Farm in the Cotswolds.

He said: “Where I would have been emotional was saying goodbye to the crew because most of them started with us.

“There’s a photograph taken on Kubu Island of Russ Edwards and Casper Leaver (Camera Operator) and Andy Wilman, who were there on the original crew, and they’re still with us.

The Grand Tour episode guide

How many seasons of The Grand Tour are there and where do they take place?

The Grand Tour launched on Prime Video in 2016 and quickly became one of the streamer’s biggest hits as hosts Jeremy, 63, James, 60, and Richard, 52, felt it was time they move on from Top Gear hit the road.

They have now brought five epic series of motoring adventures to the small screen, each taking place in different locations and even featuring celebrity guests.

Series 1

  • Series 1 aired from 2016 to 2017 and took the presenters to a number of foreign locales, including Jordan, Morocco and Italy.
  • The series is comprised of 13 episodes, with episodes 7 and 8 making up a two-part special set in Namibia, where the trio embarked on an epic beach buggy challenge.

Series 2

  • Jeremy, Richard and James returned for more motoring actor in series 2, and drove their way across Europe as they tested out some of their dream vehicles like the Bugatti Chiron and the McLaren 720S.
  • This series, which aired from 2017 to 2018, is made up of 11 episodes. It features regular ‘studio segments’ filmed in the team’s permanent tent in the Cotswolds, and had regular participation from celebrities with two guests going head-to-head on timed laps every episode.

Series 3

  • In 2019, the presenting trio crossed continents – from North America, to South America, to Europe and Asia – putting both new vehicles and classic sports cars through their paces.
  • This series was the last to feature the regular studio segments, car reviews and timed laps.
  • To mark the end of this era the final episode’s last segment includes a montage of scenes featuring the presenters over the course of their career as a trio, not only from this programme, but also from their time hosting Top Gear.

Series 4

  • This series marked a complete change in format for The Grand Tour as it consists entirely for feature-length specials which aired between 2019 and 2021.
  • The first two chronicle Jeremy, Richard and James’ epic adventures across Asia and Africa, while the third and fourth episodes saw them put foreign cars to the test on their home turf. And fitting American vehicles through Scottish roads is no easy feat.

Series 5

  • Following the same format as series 4, the fifth and final series of The Grand Tour also consists of four feature-length specials.
  • The first of these hits screens in 2022 and follows the trio as they travelled through Norway, Sweden and Finland in three Rally-Inspired Sports Saloons.
  • The second episode was another Euro adventure while the third took the presenters back to Africa.
  • The fourth instalment of the series and final ever episode of The Grand Tour, titled One for the Road, premieres on September 13, 2024. It promises to be an emotional one as the trio set out on one epic final adventure in Zimbabwe and reflect on their 22-year-long working relationship and friendship.

“You can’t say that about any other show. We are a dysfunctional family, and I’d miss that, except for one tiny detail.

“There I was with all these guys that I’ve known and worked with for twenty-four years and I said, “I’ll see you all on Monday morning” because they all work on Clarkson’s Farm.

“I’m 100% convinced I would have been a lot more emotional without the farm show.

The Grand Tour is available stream on Prime Video.

Huw Edwards arrives at court for sentencing after he admitted being sent child sex images and video by convicted paedo

HUW Edwards has arrived at court for sentencing after he admitted being sent a string of child sex images by a convicted paedo.

The former BBC presenter, 63, was given the images and video in a sick WhatsApp chat by Alex Williams.

Edwards could face a maximum of ten years in prison when he is sentenced today.

He previously pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children.

The veteran newsreader was sent 41 images – including two videos of a boy as young as seven – by Williams in a sick WhatsApp chat.

Seven of the images fall under Category A – the most serious classification.

This included two moving images of a young child, possibly aged between seven and nine years old.

He also had photos of other children aged between 13 and 15 stored on his phone.

A further 12 images were classed as Category B and 19 as Category C.

Edwards had engaged in an online chat with 25-year-old Williams between December 2020 and August 2021.

During this time, the paedo sent Edwards 377 sexual images, of which 41 were indecent images of children.

Williams pleaded guilty in March to seven offences relating to possessing and distributing indecent images.

He was handed a 12-month jail term suspended for two years.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard in July that Edwards did not creat any of the images himself.

The charge of making indecent images can mean opening an email attachment, downloading a picture or receiving an image via social media.

Edwards quit the BBC in April after 40 years reporting on some of the world’s biggest stories.

This included leading coverage of the Queen‘s funeral and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s wedding.

He was one of the BBC’s highest-profile and highest-paid presenters with a pay bracket between £475,000 and £479,999 for the year 2023/24.

The BBC confirmed it knew in November their star newsreader had been arrested but kept paying him for another five months.

The Sun revealed previously how the dad-of-five has now split from his TV producer wife.

Edwards has moved out of the family home in Dulwich, South London, he shared with Vicky.

EDWARDS UNMASKED

By Scarlet Howes | Sun Investigations Team

THE mum of a teen sent vile messages by Huw Edwards has hit out at the disgraced BBC host in an open letter.

She tells him he caused “immense pain and suffering” to her and her son in the pursuit of his “sick pleasure”.

Edwards, 62, is due to be sentenced today over indecent images of children as young as seven found on his mobile phone.

Seven of the 41 he admitted to receiving were in Category A — the most serious classification.

The mother of the young man who Edwards paid tens of thousands of pounds to in return for sexually explicit pictures says the former news anchor should be locked up.

She writes: “Edwards has exploited very young children for his own sick ends and in my mind should go to prison.

“It breaks my heart as a mother to know that the man who groomed and controlled my son also shared the worst kind of child abuse picture.

“No paedophile who enjoys pictures of young kids should be free on the street.”

Edwards is facing a possible jail sentence when he appears in court today and could spend the rest of his life on the sex offenders register.

The anguished mum of Huw Edwards’ young victim has told the shamed BBC star: “All we cared about was stopping you.”

She poured her heart out in an open letter after she exposed the shamed News at Ten presenter for sending her teenage son tens of thousands of pounds in return for sexually explicit pictures.

Maya, 30, left her brunette locks in a naturally straight style and abandoned her cosmetics to let her glowing complexion shine though.

She accessorised with gold hoop earrings and referenced her clean aesthetic in her Instagram grid caption, with the words: “Barefacekilla.”

Her followers were quick to react, with one writing: “Naturally beautiful,” and another simply writing: “Clean.”

A third put: “The face hits different,” as one noted: “What a woman.”

Another gushed: “Golden goddess,” while one fizzed: “Soooo gorgeous.”

Maya then took to her Stories to capture her boat ride across the tranquil waters.

She pulled on a pair of sunglasses and let her locks fly loose in the sea breeze as she enjoyed her down-time away from the ITV2 series.

Maya recently treated fans to a throwback snap from the matchmaking programme as she gave a glimpse of her “unseen” Love Island bikini look.

The former Radio 1 host often delights fans with her sizzling on-screen outfits as she heads into the villa.

Earlier this summer, she wowed reality TV viewers as she entered the villa in a semi-sheer white dress.

She also switched things up in a hot pink mini dress for another episode.

Meanwhile, she opened the series in a see-through number which left fans gobsmacked.

The star is also no stranger to a bikini snap, and posed on a beach in a barely-there two-piece ahead of the launch of Love Island Games.

Ciaran and Nicole

2024 Love Island star Jess White previously revealed stars were banned from clashing with Maya’s clothing.

Stockport lass Jess was dumped from the island after six weeks in the villa this summer.

Spilling the beans on the fashion dilemmas, Jess previously told OK!: “The night of the Casa recoupling, Maya was wearing red. Emma [Milton] and Mimii [Ngulube] wanted to wear red but they couldn’t.

“They thought it might be a strobing situation but we now know it’s because Maya was wearing red.

She went on: “Another night, we weren’t allowed to wear black and that’s when she came in wearing black.

“Obviously, the moment is all about Maya so we need to make sure she’s looking her best.

“If you’re told you can’t wear red for anybody, it’s got to be for her because she’s so stunning.”

However, ITV insiders insisted Maya is not aware, nor does she have any hand in the production or styling decisions made by the team with regard to the Islanders.

Brookes, 47, was set to be part of the team covering the race in Baku – but she was surprisingly absent from coverage.

With fans wondering where the broadcaster was, she took to social media to explain that she had gone under the knife due to appendicitis.

Brookes said on Instagram: “So I landed here Tuesday night and felt poorly. Thought it was just nasty food poisoning but yesterday found out that I had appendicitis and needed surgery.

“I’ve had the appendectomy and all good. Just want to say a massive thanks to all my colleagues at Sky Sports F1 for stepping up, stepping in to cover and sending me so many messages. We really do have the best team.

“And also to Sky as a company for pulling out all the stops to get me the best care and flying out my sister for support. So, basically, that’s why I wasn’t on the coverage this weekend… see you all in Texas.”

Brookes also thanked the medics for the care she received, saying: “And the hugest of thank yous to the amazing staff at Liv Bona Dea hospital in Baku. I could not have felt in safer hands.

“From my surgeon, Elgun, to my anaesthetist, Madina, to all the nurses who downloaded Google Translate so we could communicate.

“To Ayshan, Yazgul, Shovgia, Humay and Osman – you were more than any patient could wish for. Also to Formula Medicine and all the medical staff at the Baku Circuit, you were fantastic.”

F1 drivers Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon have both missed races this year due to appendicitis, leading to Brookes joking: “What do I have in common with them?”

She was not the only famous face missing from Sky Sports’ coverage in Baku over the weekend as commentator David Croft was also not there.

His absence was due to him being on his honeymoon after recently tying the knot to Laura Bradley.
