Simon Raikes, the channel’s commissioning editor, said: “The findings have highlighted a widespread fascination with history, and an embedded desire in those who love history content to read, hear, watch – and learn – more.

“Documentaries, films and TV shows have a huge role to play in that, not least because they offer a route into history that feels more accessible than other platforms.

“You don’t have to be a history buff to be fascinated by stories from the past.

“You just need to like a good story – and have a curiosity about why the world we live in today is how it is.

“And this research shows, thrillingly, there really is a deep, deep thirst for this kind of stuff.”

Other areas of history Brits find interesting include that of their local area, their families and inventions.

While one in six enjoy watching shows about major battles from the past, according to the OnePoll data.

Arsenal and Chelsea legend Cesc Fabregas ‘faces being EVICTED from luxury apartment in row over £30k unpaid rent’

World Cup winner Fabregas, 37 and his family recently moved into a luxury apartment in the Swiss town Bissone.

Sited near Lugano, it is just 15 miles across the Italian border from Como.

But the property’s owners reportedly lodged an eviction notice via the courts earlier this month.

Former Spain international Fabregas is said to owe 34,000 Swiss francs – £30,500 – in unpaid rent and other charges.

His landlords told Italian media: “We tried to contact Fabregas’ lawyers, but without success.”

The court could now order police to throw out the ex-midfielder and his family if he does not pay up within a week.

Fabregas’ lawyer Roy Bay insisted: “All the rent payments until now have been made in full.

“Some were not made on time, as there were numerous faults and problems with the building.”

The newly-promoted minnows are 18th in the 20-team league.

They blew a 2-0 lead with 14 minutes left to draw 2-2 at home to Bologna on Saturday.

Ex-Premier League stars Pepe Reina, Raphael Varane, Alberto Moreno and Patrick Cutrone are in the Como squad.

The former jockey, 48, continues to undergo intensive treatment at a specialist spinal care unit after being crushed in the stalls at Newcastle.

Close friend AP McCoy was reduced to tears on live TV when discussing the impact Lee’s injuries had had on him earlier this year.

The 20-time champion jockey was more stoic in front of camera last weekend but described the ‘horrific existence’ his good pal now endures day-to-day.

He said: “People have no idea. It’s a horrific existence. There’s no way of dressing it up and telling you that he’s in good form and all that.

“When you can’t scratch your nose and it takes two-and-a-half hours in the morning to get out of bed – it’s just horrific.”

A JustGiving fund set up to aid Lee’s recovery has smashed the £200,000 mark.

And he continues to benefit from all the work carried out by the Injured Jockeys Fund.

McCoy also went into detail about how Lee’s friendship with former rival Richie McGrath has given him a new lease of life in the darkest of times.

“If you wanted to have a best friend, you’d want one like Richie.

“He sees him pretty much every day and speaks to him every day, he’s very lucky in that sense.

“But it’s horrific.”

The legends race was won in dramatic circumstances by former rider Sammy Jo Bell.

Something of a specialist in these contests for ex-jockeys, Bell nutted Paul Nicholls’ daughter Megan right on the line after she veered wildy left on the run-in.

Nicholls looked like she was home and hosed on 3-1 Terries Royale but Bell, on Richard Fahey’s 10-1 Harstwood, won it in the final strides.
