Darkest soap storylines

Over the years the likes of EastEndersEmmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock…

  • EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) – Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca’s adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police.
  • Emmerdale: Holly’s drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) – In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale’s first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose.
  • Hollyoaks: Luke’s rape (2000) – Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap’s first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs – who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance.
  • Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) – Just a mere mention of ‘Richard Hillman’ is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it’s not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn’t.

Bianca Jackson’s return revealed in explosive EastEnders spoilers – and she’s taking on a killer

BIANCA Jackson returns to Walford gunning for Reiss Colwell while her sister Sonia Fowler is arrested for murder.

The fiery former resident – played by Pasty Palmer – is back on Albert Square and searching for the truth behind Debbie’s murder and Sonia’s arrest.

Next week on the BBC soap, on the day of Debbie’s funeral, Martin arrives at No.25 to support Reiss following a call from Sonia.

As the pair are about to leave, Brenda and Hugh arrive to make it clear that Reiss is not welcome.

Reiss tries to plead his case, but to no avail, so Martin arranges a wake in The Vic to support him.

Reiss is touched, and starts to read his eulogy for Debbie.

But he’s interrupted by Bianca who bursts in demanding answers.

EastEnders viewers know that Reiss killed his ex wife by suffocating her.

But he has let his pregnant fiancé Sonia take the fall after the police found her DNA on Debbie.

At No.25, Bianca continues to interrogate Reiss over Sonia’s arrest.

But he becomes overwhelmed and leaves.

Realising she needs to take a different tact, Bianca returns and accuses Reiss of Debbie’s murder.

Reiss is close to confessing, but before he can, Martin and Kat arrive to diffuse the situation.

Steadfast in her belief that Reiss is to blame, Bianca retorts to desperate measures to antagonise him.

Meanwhile, Martin continues to comfort Reiss.

Reiss tells Martin about Bianca’s depression diagnosis.

    Most complained about soap storylines

Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous…

  • EastEnders baby theft: 13,400 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2011, EastEnders was flooded with complaints when Ronnie Branning (RIP) swapped her baby for the dead son of Kat Moon. The storyline drew the most number of objections in the soap’s long history and saw it roundly criticised by campaigners – with 13,400 flying in over the course of the storyline. Some viewers called it “distressing” and “horrific” but Ofcom ruled the scenes were not “unduly disturbing”.
  • Emmerdale dog-napping: 550 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2016, Ross Barton and Charity Dingle came up with a plan to steal a dog and hold it ransom – but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The nation’s pet owners rose up, insisting the storyline would encourage copycats (not to mention copydogs). Complaints over two episodes totalled a staggering 550 and soap writers quickly learnt you don’t mess with animal-lovers.
  • Coronation Street double murder: 546 Ofcom complaints – Marginally less people complained about a gruesome double murder than objected to a dog-napping plot when Pat Phelan was at the centre of a spate of killings. First he forced Andy Carver to shoot dead Vinny Ashford – and then Pat killed Andy. All the bloodshed back in 2017 proved to be too much for some viewers, who lodged complaints in vast numbers about the “violent scenes”.
  • Later in The Vic, Bianca and Martin have a heart-to-heart about her recent struggles.

But then Bianca misreads the situation and makes a big mistake.

The next morning, Kat tells Bianca she needs to face up to her actions.

Bianca goes to see a GP about her erratic behaviour.

Bianca meets Martin and reiterates her distrust of Reiss.

Later, Bianca skips her GP appointment to attend Sonia’s fundraising event.

Will Bianca make peace with Reiss? Or does she have another plan in mind?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

    Tom traps Belle
    ITV

Next week, Belle Dingle gets a call from her landlord Kim Tate that the house has been left in a mess.

Lydia Dingle supports Belle as they prepare to enter the house together.

Inside a messy Dale Head, Belle notices a screw on the floor and identifies it as a mini secret camera.

She is mortified by the revelation how Tom has been secretly filming her.

The next day, Lydia tentatively encourages Belle to go to the police when she describes feeling violated by Tom’s hidden cameras.

Belle adamantly refuses to report her ex-husband, scared of having to relive traumatic experiences and share personal footage in court.

Having reflected, Belle asks Lydia to share her experience reporting Craig to the police.

Whilst Belle’s left thoughtful, Lydia’s upset after bringing the memories back to life, but hopes it has aided Belle.

That evening, the pair reflect on their difficult day as they gaze over the Dingle land.

United in their support for each other, Lydia hopes she’s said enough to encourage Belle to go to the police.

Meanwhile, Amelia seems to have revised her opinion of Tom and there is hope when she arranges to meet privately with Belle to talk about him.

But is Amelia to be trusted in this regard or is she too now under Tom’s influence?

Alone at the Dingle’s, Belle waits for Amelia but is horror-struck when Tom lets himself in, blocks her exit and proceeds to lock the doors.

Can anyone help Belle before it’s too late?
