Awkward moment five-time Premier League title winner refuses to let Ivan Toney take penalty… before fluffing spot kick

IVAN TONEY was denied the chance to open his Al-Ahli account by one of his own team-mates on Monday.

The forward missed out on the chance to take a penalty in his new club’s AFC Champions League clash with Persepolis.

Al-Ahli hosted the Iranian side in Jeddah in the league stage of the continental competition.

During the second half, the hosts were awarded a penalty, but Toney was snubbed in favour of Riyad Mahrez to take it.

The five-time Premier League champion was denied by Persepolis goalkeeper Alexus Guendouz, though, who dived to his left to save the spot-kick.

Fans were left shocked by the decision not to let Toney take it on social media, with one writing: “Imagine not letting Ivan take it. Oh dear.”

Another added: “You pay £40m for one of the best pen takers in the world and you’re not letting him take it.”

A third fan also commented: “You’ve got the best penalty taker in the world… Nah mate I’ve got this.”

Toney has scored 30 penalties during his career and missed just two.

He also found the net for England in their Euro 2024 quarter-final shootout victory over Switzerland back in July.

Meanwhile, Mahrez has missed 11 penalties, but had scored four from four for Al-Ahli before last night’s miss.

Fortunately for the Algerian, though, Al-Ahli went on to win the match 1-0 thanks to Franck Kessie’s second minute strike, assisted by Mahrez.

Toney is still waiting to score his first goal for Al-Ahli after joining from Brentford for £40million.

He signed a four-year deal through to 2028 worth £403,000-per-week to make him one of England’s highest paid players.

The 28-year-old made his Saudi Pro League debut in a 1-1 with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr on Friday.

His next chance to open his account will come against Damac this weekend.

Eamonn Holmes slammed by fans for being ‘disrespectful’ as he poses with Hollywood star after split from Ruth Langsford

EAMONN Holmes has been slammed by fans for being “disrespectful” as he posed with Hollywood pal Kate Beckinsale.

It comes just days after the TV presenter, 64, returned to the UK with his new girlfriend Katie Alexander, 42, following a romantic holiday.

But fans were quick to slam him as ‘disrespectful’ towards ex Ruth Langsford[/caption]

The Mega Agency

This weekend The Sun revealed that Eamonn’s ex Ruth Langsford has hired a “fierce” divorce lawyer in their marital split.

But last night Eamonn appeared to be in good spirits as he caught up with Serendipity actress Kate, 51.

The telly host posted a photo of him beaming with his arm wrapped around the movie star.

The broadcaster wore a black suit and Kate dazzled in a white top with a huge floral detail, and a black skirt.

Eamonn said they’d been pals via social media for years but had finally met in real life.

He captioned the post: “After years of being SM friends an ambition fulfilled tonight with the wonderful actress Kate Beckinsale.”

But some fans were quick to take aim at Eamonn for moving on with his life amid his bitter split with Loose Women’s Ruth.

One wrote: “Putting this on social media 🙄 poor Ruth.”

A second hit out at the presenter and said: “We get it, you like younger women currently.”

A third commented: “He lost such a lady is the new lady his carer??”

This angry follower said: “You have destroyed Ruth and your beautiful son Jack, I don’t think you will find happiness.”

This person shared: “Publicity stunt! Nothing more! Grow up Eamomn. Trying make your wife jealous with a younger model! Cringe.”

While another added: “Ruth has shown so much dignity. Eammon is disrespectful flaunting his floozy!”

But some followers were quick to defend the star and said they should be happy that he appears in a positive place.

This person said: “Oh My Good God! These Comments!! He’s been struggling and Kate has been really really poorly and them meeting has put a smile on their faces. Be happy for them, you twisted people!”

A second echoed: “Good lord there are so many disgusting nasty comments about Eamonn. It’s his life no one knows what happened and quite frankly it’s no one’s business either.”

Another added: “So many nasty comments! If you can’t say anything nice say nothing at all….”

The TV star’s snap comes after he enjoyed a getaway with his new girlfriend Katie.

And earlier this week we revealed that Eamonn is set to move in with his girlfriend, just four months after announcing his shock split.

Meanwhile Eamonn’s ex Ruth Langsford has hired a “fierce” divorce lawyer in their marital split, as revealed by The Sun this weekend.

Eamonn will be up against Catherine Costley, a protegee of Baroness Fiona Shackleton, who was enlisted by Paul McCartney in his break-up.

Loose Women host Ruth turned to her several months ago as she seeks to end her 14-year marriage to Eamonn with a financial settlement.

Ruth is STILL wearing her wedding ring after she was pictured at a public outing over the weekend.

The telly star put on a brave face to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society – and Ruth is an ambassador for the charity.

The event took place in Painshill Park in Surrey, close to where Ruth lives in the marital home she once shared with Eamonn.

On Saturday night Ruth thanked fans for their support as she enjoyed a takeaway with her son Jack, who she shares with Eamonn.

AC Milan vs Liverpool preview

Liverpool take to the European stage at the legendary San Siro against AC Milan in the brand new league phase of the Champions League.

But though the format has changed, the assignment remains the same – win.

Liverpool’s fantastic start to the 2024-25 campaign came to a shuddering halt over the weekend after suffering a shock defeat to Nottingham Forest at Anfield.

The Reds had won all three top-flight matches without conceding prior to the international break but manager Arne Slot now finds himself needing to bounce back for the first time in his Liverpool tenure.

The Merseyside outfit are more than capable of doing so, and have won four of their last five away games against Italian sides in European competition.

They also did the double over AC Milan in the 2021-22 Champions League group stage.

But the task could be a little more tricky after AC Milan’s resounding 4-0 win over the weekend – although that was Paulo Fonseca’s first in the opening four competitive games of his tenure.

When is AC Milan vs Liverpool?

  • AC Milan vs Liverpool will take place on Tuesday, September 17
  • It is scheduled to kick off at 20:00pm BST
  • The encounter will take place at the San Siro in Milan, Italy

What is the team news?

Federico Chiesa did not make the squad for Liverpool’s Premier League game against Nottingham Forest, as manager Arne Slot is cautious with his fitness. He could make his debut in Italy but is very unlikely to start. Harvey Elliott is out with a foot fracture.

For AC Milan, Ismael Bennacer, Alessandro Florenzi, and Marco Sportiello are injured, with Malick Thiaw doubtful. Davide Calabria is fit, and Fonseca is likely to stick with the winning team from the weekend, including the likes of Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

AC Milan vs Liverpool betting tips and predictions

Goals

There should be no shortage of goals in this fixture, if both sides have their shooting boots on.

AC Milan’s first four games of the Serie A campaign have finished 2-2, 2-1, 2-2 and 4-0 with Paulo Fonseca’s side having had the most touches in the opposition penalty area and the second-highest xG in the division.

The hosts are conceding plenty of chances, while only four Premier League sides can better Liverpool’s 62 attempts in four outings and only Manchester City have a higher xG.

  • Over 3.5 goals scored at 6/5 with William Hill – CLAIM HERE

Mo

With plenty of goals expected, it stands to reason that Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah will get himself on the scoresheet.

The Egyptian superstar, 32, has scored 41 Champions League goals for Liverpool, which ranks as the highest tally any player has recorded for an English club.

He’s also started the season in fine form having struck three goals in four matches and has double the number of attempts on target than any of his Liverpool colleagues (8). He also remains on penalties.

Only Erling Haaland & Mohamed Salah have earned more points than Jean-Philippe Mateta among Dream Team forwards

ONLY Erling Haaland (£9.1m) has scored more goals than Jean-Philippe Mateta (£3.3m) this season.

Manchester City’s No9 is in a league of his own having raced to NINE in the blink of an eye but the Crystal Palace striker leads the chasing pack with four.

Picking up where he left off last season[/caption]

Granted, two of the Frenchman’s goals came against Norwich in the Carabao Cup second round but Dream Team famously encompasses all competitions and such match-ups are there to be exploited.

Mateta bagged a brace against Leicester on Saturday to help the Eagles come from 2-0 down to rescue a point.

His first poacher’s effort was initially flagged offside but proved to be valid by VAR.

He then sealed a draw with a stoppage-time penalty, which came as a surprise as Eberechi Eze (£4.7m) was considered the club’s first-choice spot-kick taker prior to kick-off.

Ultimately, Mateta banked 16 points to catapult him up the rankings.

At the time of writing, only the aforementioned Haaland and Mohamed Salah (£7.6m) have more points to their name among Dream Team forwards.

TOP DREAM TEAM STRIKERS

  1. Erling Haaland – 77 pts
  2. Mohamed Salah – 49 pts
  3. Jean-Philippe Mateta – 41 pts
  4. Jarrod Bowen – 38 pts
  5. Yoane Wissa – 33 pts

It’s been feast-or-famine for Mateta so far this season as he mustered just five points collectively from his games against Brentford, West Ham and Chelsea.

In contrast, he took Norwich and Leicester for a combined 36 points.

Incredibly, the 27-year-old has scored with all of his shots on target so far in 2024/25.

Mateta’s bright start to the new campaign is a continuation of the form he has shown ever since Oliver Glasner took charge at Selhurst Park.

He’s now scored 18 club goals in all competitions since the start of February.

And he may get the chance to build on his impressive tally if selected against QPR this evening.

Glasner picked a strong team in the Carabao Cup last time out[/caption]

Looking further ahead, it may be difficult for Mateta to keep pace with the most-prosperous forwards as Palace don’t have European commitments to pad out their schedule.

Progression to the next round of the Carabao Cup would go some way to levelling the playing field but Dream Team bosses really should be prioritising the European competitions in the coming weeks.

Palace are due to face Manchester United, Everton and Liverpool in the league before the next international break.

Octopus boss issues urgent message over winter fuel payment cut

THE BOSS of Octopus Energy has issued an urgent message after the winter fuel payment was cut ahead of this winter season.

Greg Jackson said energy suppliers should “be helpful” to the Government and give extra support to elderly people who will be missing out on their allowance.

Greg Jackson said energy suppliers should help people losing their winter fuel allowance[/caption]

Hundreds of thousands of pensioners will miss out on the allowance[/caption]

The British entrepreneur, who founded Octopus in 2016, said: “We all know there were some people receiving the winter fuel allowance who didn’t need it – that costs everyone else money.”

He added: “But then there’s the grey area of people losing it that need it – that’s where we can help.”

Under plans announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in July, winter fuel payments will be restricted to those receiving Pension Credit.

It means around 10 million people will lose out this winter, with the benefit taken away from all but the poorest pensioners in the country. About 11.5 million people used to receive it.

The Government argues it is right to means-test the benefit, which is worth up to £300, in order to tackle what it calls a “black hole” in the public finances.

But it has also prompted bitter outcry, including from some Labour MPs, with critics pointing out that Pension Credit only tops up income to £11,300 a year for individuals, meaning many who do not qualify could still struggle paying bills.

Mr Jackson, who has been vocal in his support for previous Labour policies, said: “In these transition periods, it’s easy for people to kick and scream.

“Alternatively, companies and others can say: ‘How do we make this work in a way that is best for Britain and, in our case, best for our customers?’”

He added that the Government has got to “make difficult decisions. So now let’s be helpful in making sure that when you make those decisions, we can look after the people who will be worst affected.”

However, ministers should keep a “close eye on the impact” of the policy if this winter is colder than usual, Mr Jackson said, and be “ready to act” if more support is needed.

Octopus, the UK’s largest energy supplier, announced last month that it will continue its £30million assistance fund into this winter for pensioners who do not qualify for state support.

Through the scheme, customers can get discretionary credit of between £50 and £200.

And Octopus said it is now broadening the eligibility criteria to help pensioners affected by the tightening of winter fuel payments

The company also has a range of other measures, including giving out free electric blankets to vulnerable customers.

What is Octopus’ support fund?

Octopus Energy offers a range of support including cash from its Octopus Energy Assist Fund.

The fund has helped more than 80,000 customers struggling financially with support such as payment breaks, standing charge holidays and help clearing energy bill debt.

It could also include the loan of a thermal imagery camera to find heat leaks at home that you can fix to reduce energy usage and your bill.

It also does home energy visits to help discuss how households can reduce their usage. Plus it has previously gives out free electric blankets.

What you can get depends on your circumstances and needs.

Octopus is encouraging all customers to get in contact if they’re struggling with their bills.

Direct bill support could include vouchers up to £500 or a payment holiday.

You can contact Octopus via its website.

Octo Assist fund is still open for applications and there is no deadline for customers to apply.

What are other energy firms offering?

The country’s biggest supplier, British Gas, previously had an energy grant scheme in place, with the hardest-pressed households receiving a grant of up to £2,000.

The firm also has also launched a debt reduction scheme called ‘You Pay: We Pay’.

Struggling customers will also be able to get part of their debts wiped via what’s known as debt matching.

For instance, if a customer pays £100, British Gas will pay off £100 too, effectively wiping half the amount owed and getting them back on track sooner.

Through their Warm Home Discount, E.ON give a one-off £150 credit on electricity bills to help customers who may be struggling to pay their bills during winter.

EDF has a customer support fund which on average wipes £1,250 off customers’ bills

It is available to vulnerable customers experiencing hardship.

To apply you must visit EDF’s website and make sure you have details of your account number (find it on your energy bills or EDF emails) and the current debt balance on all EDF accounts you have.

Check directly with your supplier to see what help is available.

The firm is also offering customers the opportunity to run their homes for no cost if they take part in a new challenge.

To get the hours of free electricity, customers must cut down on using electrical devices during “peak hours”, which tend to be between 4pm-7pm Monday to Friday.

In return, EDF will give customers free electricity on Sundays, when demand to the energy grid tends to be lower.

What energy bill help is available?

THERE'S a number of different ways to get help paying your energy bills if you're struggling to get by.

If you fall into debt, you can always approach your supplier to see if they can put you on a repayment plan before putting you on a prepayment meter.

This involves paying off what you owe in instalments over a set period.

If your supplier offers you a repayment plan you don’t think you can afford, speak to them again to see if you can negotiate a better deal.

Several energy firms have grant schemes available to customers struggling to cover their bills.

But eligibility criteria varies depending on the supplier and the amount you can get depends on your financial circumstances.

For example, British Gas or Scottish Gas customers struggling to pay their energy bills can get grants worth up to £2,000.

British Gas also offers help via its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.

You don’t need to be a British Gas customer to apply for the second fund.

EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy and Scottish Power all offer grants to struggling customers too.

Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protections by not signing up to the Priority Services Register (PSR).

The service helps support vulnerable households, such as those who are elderly or ill, and some of the perks include being given advance warning of blackouts, free gas safety checks and extra support if you’re struggling.

Get in touch with your energy firm to see if you can apply.

It comes as energy suppliers have come under pressure for making large profits over the last two years, while bills have rocketed as a result of soaring gas prices.

Octopus turned its first ever profit of £203million for the year ending April 2023, the most recent year on record, while revenue tripled to £13billion.

The company’s UK energy retail arm took on £69million of costs to lower customer bills over the same period.

Mr Jackson’s comments come weeks before energy bills are due to get more expensive again this winter.

Regulator Ofgem said the average household bill is set to increase by £149 from October after it increased the quarterly price cap for the winter months.

Last month, Labour’s energy consumers minister Miatta Fahnbulleh held talks with suppliers including Octopus, asking for help with a marketing campaign to alert customers to bills support that is already available.

Sources with knowledge of the matter said ministers also asked firms about longer term market reforms for energy bills, including a social tariff, something campaign groups have proposed for several years.

The measure would likely take the form of a targeted discount energy deal for poorer customers, and could be below the price of the cheapest available standard energy tariff.

Mr Jackson said it is “important” to bring energy costs down for everyone, but added that “the question is who pays” for a social tariff.

He said: “It’s either going to be the Government, in which case they need to put taxes up, or it’s going to be paid for by other energy customers, in which case bills go up for everyone who’s not getting it. The challenge is that bills are already too high.”

Instead, the Octopus boss has been lobbying ministers to introduce another pricing system, based on proximity to where clean energy is generated, to reform bills.

The system, known as locational marginal pricing, would see people living near wind farms pay less for electricity.

Regional pricing is “the critical thing we need to do”, Mr Jackson said, citing a recent report carried out by FTI Consulting, which claimed it could save bill payers £51billion by 2040.

Octopus already offers time-specific discounts for people living near wind farms of up to 50% in high winds, when the turbines generate more power.

The initiative has led to tens of thousands of people contacting Octopus since 2021 asking for turbines to be built near their homes, he said.

Critics say it would be unfair for people to pay less based on where they live.

Mr Jackson said that while the biggest discounts “will be the areas with the most electricity generation”, such as areas of Scotland, the price would drop “in every region” because the transmission system would also be “more efficient”.

The Labour Government has introduced a swathe of changes since the general election, including forming a new state energy investment firm, GB Energy, to help boost renewables in recent months.

It is also consulting on reforms to the planning system designed to make it easier to upgrade the power grid and build clean energy projects, which Mr Jackson said he supports.

But it is “early days” for the new Government, he said, adding: “We need to see the hard stuff happening to push energy costs down for good.”

How do I calculate my energy bill?

BELOW we reveal how you can calculate your own energy bill.

To calculate how much you pay for your energy bill, you must find out your unit rate for gas and electricity and the standing charge for each fuel type.

The unit rate will usually be shown on your bill in p/kWh.The standing charge is a daily charge that is paid 365 days of the year – irrespective of whether or not you use any gas or electricity.

You will then need to note down your own annual energy usage from a previous bill.

Once you have these details, you can work out your gas and electricity costs separately.

Multiply your usage in kWh by the unit rate cost in p/kWh for the corresponding fuel type – this will give you your usage costs.

You’ll then need to multiply each standing charge by 365 and add this figure to the totals for your usage – this will then give you your annual costs.

Divide this figure by 12, and you’ll be able to determine how much you should expect to pay each month from April 1.

“The Climate in the Country” is not the business of courts

If the courts start making decisions – as they were urged to do in this instance – based on how the climate in the country might be affected by those decisions, then they are no longer impartial judicial actors, but political actors.
