Couples Therapy: Who is Dr Orna Guralnik from the BBC2 docuseries about relationships

DR ORNA Guralnik is an psychologist and psychoanalyst, who hosts Showtime’s hit show: Couples Therapy.

In the show, she helps couples unpack the issues in their relationship.

Some of the issues that she tackles on the show are amongst the newest and most complex problems facing couples today.

So who is the TV star and what is her own relationship like?

Parental psychology

Orna is an Israeli-American psychologist and psychoanalyst.

She grew up in Tel Aviv (against the backdrop of the Yom Kippur War) and often found herself being the mediator for her parents when they argued.

The psychoanalyst told The New Yorker: “I was developing my analytic mind very early. I always joke that they were my first couple to be treated.”

Initially, Orna wanted to be an actress but a trip to therapy when she was 16 set her on the path of becoming a psychologist herself.

Decades of experience

The future TV star moved to New York in 1990 to study clinical psychology at Yeshiva University, before completing her PHD at New York University.

Since graduating, she has researched the psychology behind couples’ relationships and has become one of the most knowledgeable psychologists in her field.

She revealed some of her working process to Variety magazine.

Orna said: “As a psychoanalyst, you want to really have the same distance from all the inner voices in the patient.”

“Otherwise, I try to really keep going back to a place of what we call neutrality.

Now, that’s not always possible, but that’s the North Star. That’s where I try to go to.”

TV stardom

The psychologist has presented Couples Therapy on Showtime (in the US) and the BBC (in the UK) since 2019.

Fans have likened her to Gillian Anderson’s Sex Education character Jean Milburn and Lorraine Bracco’s The Sopranos character Jennifer Melfi.

In the show, Orna meets troubled couples and helps them get to the bottom of the issues in their relationships.

Each episode features a new couple and tackles hard hitting issues, from the effects of racism in a relationship to polyamory.

Couples Therapy will return to screens in the UK at 10pm, on September 18, 2024.

UK fans can catch the show on BBC2.

Woman of mystery

Although it is Orna’s job to get into people’s private lives, she is very guarded when it comes to her own.

This is a very deliberate choice, as she feels patients and clients knowing too much about her could complicate their working relationship.

She told the New Yorker: “There’s so much that people gain from being able to not know about me, or from being able to imagine me as one way or another.”

“Am I a conservative straight person?

Am I gay?

“Am I queer?

“The moment I start talking about myself, I’m robbing them of all that.”

Orna has revealed, though, that she has a son named Jasper and a daughter named Ruby.

She also has an adorable Alaskan Klee Kai called Nico.

Gemma Collins convinced her great-great grandfather was Jack The Ripper – and plans to contact his ghost to find out

GEMMA Collins is convinced Jack The Ripper was her great-great grandfather – and plans to contact his ghost to find out the truth.

The 43-year-old will appear in an upcoming episode of BBC show Who Do You Think You Are?.

While filming for the ancestry programme Gemma found out some of her distant relatives lived in Dorset Street in East London, where the norotious serious killer left the bodies of some of his victims in 1888.

And former Towie star Gemma doesn’t think it’s a coincidence that her great-great grandfather William Williams lived on the same street.

She told the Daily Star: “My great great grandfather worked in a workhouse and died there. I think that’s the reason they can’t find Jack The Ripper… because it was him.

“The writing is on the wall. It could only happen to me. It would be my luck that he would be one of my relatives.”

Now Gemma plans to contact the ghost of Jack the Ripper using her own “psychic powers” to find out the truth.

Gemma continued: “No one knows who the ripper was, but we lived next door to where a lot of his victims were being killed. You just don’t know.

“I’m ecstatic. I always knew there was more to me and my family. The macabre of it – I just think it’s a hilarious story. Obviously the murders were terrible and I get that.

“But how could it be that my family were on the same street as Jack The Ripper’s victims? You just couldn’t make it up.

“You’ve got The GC and Jack the Ripper. I’m an unusual character and that’s definitely come from somewhere.”

It comes after Gemma revealed the secret side hustle that’s helped her become a millionaire.

Speaking to The Sun recently, Gemma told how she’s been investing in property for years.

She said: “I don’t worry about my future because I’ve put everything in place -but I’ve done it late in life.

“I had normal jobs and I’m not sure there were pension schemes then, I am self-employed, so I did it late in life.

“I was 40 when I started to [invest], I wish I had the knowledge that I have now in my 20s.”

Warning as new ‘more contagious’ Covid variant XEC spreads to 27 countries – and experts say ‘it’s just getting started’

SCIENTISTS are sounding the alarm about a new more contagious Covid variant called XEC, which is spreading across Europe.

First detected in Germany in June, XEC has now been reported in several countries, including the UK, Denmark, and Germany.

Scientists believe the fresh bug is not likely to be as deadly as some of its predecessors, but could be more contagious[/caption] an illustration of a woman showing the new covid symptoms

The XEC variant is shaping up to be the “next big challenge” for hospitals, experts say.

“At this juncture, the XEC variant appears to be the most likely one to get legs next,” Dr Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute in California, wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

He said it may take “many weeks, a couple of months, before it really takes hold and starts to cause a wave”.

He added: “XEC is definitely taking charge,”

“That does appear to be the next variant.

“But it’s months off from getting into high levels.”

As it stands, scientists believe the fresh bug is not likely to be as deadly as some of its predecessors, but could be more contagious.

Professor Francois Balloux, Director of the Genetics Institute at University College London, told BBC News that although XEC has a “slight transmission advantage” over other recent Covid variants, vaccines should still offer good protection

For those more likely to become seriously ill from Covid, the NHS offers a free booster shot.

Jabs have been updated to tackle recent variants, though not specifically for XEC, which evolved from earlier Omicron strains.

The symptoms of the XEC variant aren’t too different from what we’ve seen with earlier strains, including tiredness, headaches, sore throat, and a high fever.

News of this new variant comes after a summer surge of the other coronavirus subvariants including FLiRT.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has not yet released data on the XEC variant, so the number of people who have contracted it in the UK is not known.

However, the latest figures show that Covid cases in the UK are increasing by 4.3 per cent week on week.

The leading countries reporting cases of XEC are Germany, Denmark, the UK and the Netherlands, Covid data analyst Mike Honey, said on X.

So far, over 500 samples from 27 countries, including Poland, Norway, Luxembourg, Ukraine, Portugal and China, have been found to contain XEC, according to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data.

Its prevalence remains low in the US and Canada, though scientists are keeping a close eye on its spread, especially in Europe.

What are the symptoms of XEC Covid?

Symptoms are thought to be the same cold or flu-like ones that came with previous variants.

This includes:

  • A high temperature
  • Aches
  • Tiredness
  • A cough or sore throat
  • Trouble sleeping
  • A runny nose

Most people feel better within a few weeks of Covid but it can take longer to recover.

How can I stay protected?

Covid-19 spreads very easily through close contact with people who have the virus.

So if you, or your child are at increased risk from Covid try and stay away from people with symptoms until they feel better.

It’s important to wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitiser regularly throughout the day.

Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.

You should get vaccinated if you are eligible.

People qualifying for a free booster vaccine include:

  • Adults aged 65 years and over
  • Those living in a care home for older adults
  • Those over the age of six months in a clinical risk group
  • Some front-line NHS, care-home and social-care workers

Tasha Ghouri shares behind-the-scenes look at Strictly rehearsals with Aljaz as fans call them the ‘dream team’

STRICTLY Come Dancing star Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec have been branded the “dream team”.

The former Love Island alumni shared a clip from their rehearsals where they lip-synced together.

Tasha’s fans have wished the couple luck ahead of the show launch[/caption]

“Team Aljtash”, she wrote on the Instagram video as they playfully clicked together.

“Let’s gooo!! Not long until the live show,” she added in the caption.

Tasha looked incredible in a white sports bra and light grey leggings.

She pulled her blonde locks back in a ponytail and went makeup-free and showed off her natural beauty.

Fans flocked to the comment section to wish the dancing couple luck.

“Bring on all the tiktok’s !! dream team,” one wrote.

“I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU GUYS EEEKKKK” a second chimed.

“Woohoo! I can’t wait to watch your dancing skills and general awesomeness,” wrote another.

Tasha met her boyfriend Andrew Le Page on Love Island in 2022 and fans are excited to see him in the audience.

“I can’t wait to see Andrew in the audience supporting you,” one wrote.

Tasha was dragged into a fix row after she was accused of having an unfair advantage over her dancing background.

Before shooting to fame Tasha, 25, was a professional dancer.

However, speaking to The Sun and other media, the star has defended her place in the ballroom.

Tashsa said: “When you’re in the studio, the glitterballs and the ballroom floor it’s like a whole new world.

“Commercial dance is very different to ballroom dance and latin, I’m still having to strip down and relearn, even walking in cha cha step is weird to me.”

“Turning your feet out and leading with your hips, I’m having to relean muscle memory so that’s the hard part.

“Even letting a man take the lead is a lot.”

Watch shocking moment Rolls-Royce worth £740,000 suddenly bursts into flames as it’s driving on busy motorway

THIS is the shocking moment a £740,000 Rolls-Royce suddenly burst into flames while travelling along a busy motorway.

Terrifying dash cam footage captured the blaze as it engulfed the car’s rear end, seemingly at random.

Thankfully, the driver realised what had happened and managed to pull over[/caption]

In the clip, the large Cullinan SUV is spotted overtaking the camera cars on a Chinese motorway leading to Beijing Airport.

As it passes, a tongue of flame suddenly shoots from the underside of the motor.

There is nothing obvious in the video to suggest what caused the fire.

As the vehicle travelled along, the blaze continued to rage beneath it, carpeting the tarmac in fire.

The driver appears to realise what is happening and pulls over to the side of the road as the video ends.

Footage of the aftermath has also emerged on social media as passersby filmed the chaos.

Pedestrians and other drives could be seen running back and forth trying to throw water on the inferno and calling for help.

Fire crews soon arrived but, by then, the flames looked to have already found their way inside the cabin, with smoke billowing out from the open windows.

Jets of fire shot out from the wheel arches and the rear of the car appeared to have been badly damaged.

The fire was eventually brought under control but the vehicle had to be written off, according to reports from Chinese media.

The car is estimated to be worth about 7 million yuan, roughly equivalent to £746,000 – well above the £298,000 starting price in the UK.

According to a report in the Sichuan Observer, the owner was fully insured and is expected to receive a payout of up to £639,000 (6 million yuan) on a successful claim.

The road also had to be partially closed, causing a tailback for around a mile, the report added.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

It comes after a major car brand accidentally leaked a picture of its facelifted new model on its website.

I dumped my MAFS husband after months of insane behaviour…huge red flag on our honeymoon wasn’t aired says Erica Roberts

DESPITE quite a few heated arguments, it seemed like Erica Roberts and Jordan Gayle were one of the few success stories from last year’s series of Married At First Sight.

However, by February, the MAFS couple, who met at the altar on their wedding day, confirmed they’d split up.

They seemed like the perfect couple[/caption]

But now Erica has revealed everything wasn’t quite as it seemed[/caption]

Erica wrote on Instagram: “This hasn’t been an easy decision for us both as we really wanted to make our relationship work.

“I truly wish him all the best and there is no bad blood between us.”

But now, in an exclusive interview with The Sun, as the new series of MAFS returns, Erica reveals it wasn’t quite as amicable as she first made out.

In fact, she dumped him after constant rows and it was an event on his 27th birthday that became the final straw for her.

“It was a long time coming,” she tells us. “ I just completely started losing myself, trying to look after him.

“I feel like I very much took that role in the relationship.

“He needed a lot from me and I think he really put a lot of pressure on me to be his sole support system.

“And that’s too much for one person.

“I want to be your partner and your lover, not your therapist and your mum. It just got too much for me.”

She continues: “I felt like I was giving masculine energy and I just never want to feel like that.

“I feel like I’m at the stage now where I’ve always had to look after myself and that is just how I am. I don’t ask people for help.

“But it would be nice to be in a relationship where I just knew they had me and I just didn’t have that.

“The relationship was just not balanced whatsoever.”

Breaking point

Jordan and Erica appeared on MAFS last year, meeting for the first time on their wedding day.

They were an ‘intruder couple’, joining the E4 experiment late, and seemed to be one of the most loved-up pairings.

Erica says the breaking point was a row over ten-pin bowling on his birthday[/caption]

She dumped him there and then[/caption]

However, Jordan was caught up in one of the biggest feuds of the last series when Luke Worley punched him before being axed from the show.

Then, during the explosive reunion show, Erica and Jordan’s co-star Laura Vaughan said the couple were non-stop arguing while they were living with her.

And the pair were also seen arguing on that episode too.

But the breaking point came on Jordan’s 27th birthday, when Erica surprised him with a trip up to Scotland, where she lives.

I was like, ‘I’m done. I cannot continue this. This is insane behaviour.’

Erica Roberts

She recalls: “He was so angry at me, at the fact that, yes, I’d taken him away for his birthday but then I was unable to come to Sheffield to play ten-pin bowling with his mum.

“So he basically kicked off and went crazy at me for not going bowling and said that I gave him the worst birthday of his life, he’s only 27 once and I ruined that for him, even though I’d taken him to this beautiful place up in Scotland.

“Bear in mind, this man’s never taken me out for dinner the whole time we were in a relationship, yet he told me that what I’d organised was the bare minimum.

“So I thought, ‘You know what, I’m tapping out. I actually can’t do this anymore.’ And that was it.

“I was like, ‘I’m done. I cannot continue this. This is insane behaviour.’”

Unaired honeymoon row

Erica and Jordan’s honeymoon looked idyllic but there was a big unaired row[/caption]

Erica went on to reveal there were “a lot of red flags” throughout their relationship, and alarm bells started ringing for her as early as the wedding day.

They also had an unaired argument on the last night of their honeymoon in Antigua that caused Erica to start having doubts.

She says: “Even on the wedding day, he was interrupting me and not able to really have a conversation, or I would speak about myself, and he’d flip it back on to him.

“That was continuously happening on the honeymoon.

Looking back now, the warning signs were literally there from day one

Erica Roberts

“We had a really big argument on the honeymoon, on the last evening and none of that was shown.

“It was very much like, Jordan and Erica are in love and happy, but it wasn’t all like that.

“There’s definitely a lot of things that went on that viewers didn’t get to see.

“I said to him, ‘I do feel like you’re kind of dismissing the things I say, and not really listening to me, or you just want to talk about yourself.’

“And that led to him having an absolute meltdown.”

She continues: “I think I knew from that moment. I knew that his communication skills were pretty much non-existent at that point.

“He’d have a meltdown about what I’ve said and I then would have to comfort him because he’s upset about how he’s made me feel.

“And that was literally the common theme in our whole relationship.

“So looking back now, the warning signs were literally there from day one.”

Congratulated for dumping Jordan

Erica’s co-stars congratulated her for dumping Jordan[/caption]

She said she would have needed therapy if she’d been in the relationship any longer[/caption]

Many of Erica and Jordan’s MAFS co-stars seemed to have beef with them throughout their time on the show.

And one, Georges Bert, said it was down to Jordan’s behaviour, accusing him of causing arguments to get more airtime, something he claims he told him he was doing.

He told The Tab previously: “You’ll see, he tried to pick on everyone. Nothing pleases him. Watch, he very very rarely says anything positive.”

And Erica tells us how most of her co-stars have congratulated her on finally breaking up with him.

I was like, I’m going to end up needing therapy if I continue with this relationship.

She says: “Everyone was really supportive of me rather than him.

“They were all like, ‘Well done, you got rid of him. It was a long time coming. This had to happen.’”

Erica says the reason she stayed with him for so long was partly because there were some good moments throughout the relationship.

However, a lot of it was down to the pressure she felt from fans.

Mafs couples that have stood the test of time

Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby.

The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam’s Doncaster home.

Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau.

Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December.

Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: “I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out – and excited for everything to come.”

Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019.

Owen recalled: “I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work.

“While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in.

“The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I signed up?’

“A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.”

Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson.

Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna’s vegan lifestyle, the show’s first same sex pairing are still going strong.

They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.

Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”

“I did, genuinely, really like him, and I wanted to make it work,” she tells us. “And there were so many good qualities that we did have as well. Obviously, it wasn’t all bad.

“We had so much fun with each other.

“But I do think when you come off a show like this, there is a pressure around it, as a couple. “You have all these people being like, ‘Oh, my God, we love you guys and you’re amazing. We want you to work.’

“I think obviously that that did have a factor in it, like you do want to make it work, and not just for yourself, but for people that watch the show.

“That’s hard… It is tough to maintain that and try and make it work, and I did try for as long as I could. It just got to the point where I was, like, alright, this is actually not even worth it.

“My mental health is much more important than trying to make this work.

“I was like, I’m going to end up needing therapy if I continue with this relationship.”

‘Good luck to her’

Erica wishes Jordan’s girlfriend “good luck”[/caption]

Despite saying he was “heartbroken” by the split at first, Jordan has now moved on with Melissa Golik, an emergency nurse from Australia.

While Erica is still single, she insists she’s happy for her ex – and he won’t be appearing on her You and Me podcast, which she hosts with her Traitors winner best pal, Meryl Williams.

She says: “We haven’t spoken since we broke up.

“Obviously he came out and did all these podcasts about me and was crying online and s**t. Then he popped out a whole new girlfriend, which is great because I literally was like, ‘Please, instead of making these podcasts, please move on. Please go heal. Do what you have to do. Just stop talking about me.’

“And that’s what he’s done. So it’s great.”

She adds: “Good luck to her because I’ve been there.

“But I’m happy. As long as he’s good, then that’s fine.”

Erica and Meryl’s You and Me podcast is out on all streaming platforms.

Man City vs Inter preview

Manchester City have very fond memories of Champions League ties against Inter.

Granted, they’ve only faced them once in this competition. But that was a memorable one with Rodri’s only goal in the 2023 final clinching European success for the club for the first time.

Given the way they’ve started this season, they’re rightly favourites to win it again this season.

They’re the only side with a 100% record after four games and Erling Haaland has nine goals in that time. Yup, 9.

Inter are unbeaten themselves in four games in Serie A but have dropped points in both away games at Genoa and Monza.

This is a little bit of a step up on those two.

When is Man City vs Inter?

  • Manchester City vs Inter will take place on Wednesday, September 18
  • It is scheduled to kick off at 20:00pm BST
  • The encounter will take place at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester

Scoring two goals, hat tricks, 1st scorer – the value is starting to get less for punters, and for good reason!

So finding that him scoring with his head – something he’s done 11 times in his 72 Premier League games – is at a decent price will absolutely do for us!
