I was a Byker Grove child star, BBC makeup artists tore me to shreds and left me feeling worthless

A FORMER Byker Grove star has revealed that she developed body dysmorphia after being made to feel worthless by makeup artists on the show.

Holly Matthews 39, was just 11-years-old when she was cast as Emma Miller in the popular BBC children’s TV series.

The actress, who now runs the award-winning The Happy Me Project, which helps women build their confidence, revealed that as soon as she walked into the make-up room on set, she was criticised by the staff.

“As a pre-teen in the 90s I was very unaware of how to do my hair, make up and had very little knowledge of the fashion of the time (other than what I saw my school friends wear),” Holly told MailOnline.

“I remember stepping into the bright make up room and feeling so small next to the older (more experienced) girls in the cast. They were only a few years older than me but they seemed so sophisticated and self-assured, as I held back unsure of what to do.

“The make-up artist engulfed them in compliments: ‘Your hair looks amazing!’ ‘Wow, you look so beautiful’ and then she turned to me and said ‘Oh you’ve got really bad skin, we’ll have to cover that’ as I felt my face burn red.”

Holly said that this moment, had a “profound” effect on the rest of her life.

The Newcastle-born actress spent six months of the year filming the show, known for plummeting Ant and Dec to fame, and said that during this time she always had someone “correcting” her face.

“The other six months were spent seeing my face on TV and being very conscious of people looking at me”, she said.

Holly said that because she was constantly seeing herself on TV, she began to view her body through the eyes of other people.

“I almost saw myself and my body as a product, a character that I needed to paint, chop and adapt to fit the version the world needed me to be”, she said.

“I now understand this is called self-objectification.”

Self-objectification refers to when someone views themselves first as a physical object, and as a human second.

This can result in people becoming extremely critical of their own bodies.

From a very young age, Holly began to make a long list of all of the cosmetic procedures she thought she needed to have, including breast implants.

Holly's Top Tips For Body Confidence

Get to know yourself and your body.

We don’t stay the same forever and as we age it’s easy to lose ourselves in amongst all of the adult responsibilities we’re surrounded with. Take time to get to know this era of you and explore your current likes, dislikes, wants and desires. Explore how your body moves and every inch of this version of you. They may not be the same as they once were and that’s OK. We don’t have to stay the same forever. Celebrate your ‘quirks’ by recognising that some of your ‘worst’ qualities, may also be your ‘best’.  Changing the disempowering labels, you give yourself can help you see the good in all that you are.

Be kind to your body- Start treating your own body with a kindness and love that is easy to forget to do. This might be applying moisturiser, suncream, massage, Warm baths and even exercise (as long as this is done to be kind does not punish).

Use kinder language. We aren’t going for perfection, just something gentler. If you’re currently using the worst words to describe who you are then find anything softer than this. You may not yet be able to get to ‘I am beautiful’ but perhaps you can achieve ‘I am OK.’ Or even a natural stance of ‘I have a body’ or gratitude of something your body has done for you.

Change the story Where did the negative messaging come from that is currently living within your mind? An old school friend, teacher, critical parent or partner, I guarantee there is a story attached to why you are being harsh on yourself, and we start here. This story was never yours and you get to give it back to whoever gave it to you. Challenge the narrative and if it’s not a supportive belief or story, then play with the notion of ‘what happens if I no longer believe this?’ and consider how your life would change for the better and all you would gain.

Challenge yourself to start being seen. Wear the dress you think you can’t, ditch the ‘all black attire’ and sprinkle in some colour. Wear horizontal hoops, shorts, glitter and ignore old troupes like ‘mutton dressed as lamb’. Allow fashion to be fun and playful and don’t let anyone tell you who you can be.

She added that everywhere she looked, she began to see “confirmation” of the problems with her appearance.

“A blonde glamour model with big breasts, well that was proof of how ugly I was.

“A comment about how I looked like my dad would mean I looked like a boy and wasn’t feminine.

“On one occasion I overheard a relative saying they thought my sister was more ‘naturally pretty’ than me and this translated to me as ‘you will always have to TRY to look pretty.’ “

Holly became obsessed with her looks, constantly applying fake tan, straightening her hair and piling on makeup.

She revealed that she became “consumed” by body dysmorphia, and couldn’t see what other people saw in her.

“Every time I looked in the mirror, all I could see was something to change, fix and correct, “she said.

“It was utterly exhausting and meant I would get up at excruciating hours of the day to make sure I had executed my painstaking ritual of getting ready and could leave the house.”

However, thankfully Holly began to recognise that her behaviour was not healthy, and started going to therapy and reading self-development books.

This started to take effect, and Holly became more confident in her body, sometimes braving going out without makeup and fake tan.

During her pregnancy to her eldest daughter Brooke, now 13, Holly felt happy with her growing bump.

However, after her daughter arrived, she struggled with the fact that her body did not go back to the way it had been before.

As I stared at my post- pregnancy stomach in the mirror, with red raw ‘scratches’ crawling up my stomach I sobbed”, she said. “This felt like failure.”

Holly was a size six after giving birth, and fit back into her pre-pregnancy jeans almost immediately.

However, her body dysmorphia convinced her that she needed a tummy tuck, so she booked herself into Harley Street for a consultation.

After explaining her concerns during a consultation, she was declined surgery and told to give herself time to process her new body.

Holly described this as a wake-up call and thanked the “kind” and “compassionate” woman who declined her surgery.

Since that day, Holly has worked hard on her mindset, and has now written a book, Find Your Confidence: The No-Nonsense Guide To Self-Belief, to share her advice with others.

Sharing some of the key things that initially helped her to change her mindset, Holly said: “STOP, DELETE and EDIT. Hear what your inner critic says ‘You’re so ugly, you can’t wear that’ STOP, DELETE the critical sentence and REPLACE with something BETTER, ‘I look OK’ ‘I suit the colour yellow’ and work from there.

“Accept compliments with a THANK YOU and without going into a slew of all the reasons I’m the opposite of what they just said.

“Stop reading beauty and gossip magazines (as Baz Lurman said ‘they will only make you feel ugly!’)

“But most importantly I focused on what my body could do and was compassionate about its journey.”

Naga Munchetty rakes in up to £25k in a MONTH for job away from BBC Breakfast – after fans moaned she was hardly on show

HARDWORKING Naga Munchetty has raked in up to an extra £25,000 in one month – on top of her BBC salary.

The breakfast star is one of the Beeb’s highest-earning presenters – as she takes home over £345,000 in her BBC wages.

Naga presents the BBC show Thursday to Saturday alongside Charlie Stayt.

Presenters are also allowed to pick up extra earnings by being hired at after-dinner speeches, hosting Q&A sessions for firms, and handing out gongs at corporate bashes.

Staff disclose their extra earnings to BBC bosses and the amounts are published by the corporation under transparency rules.

And the latest BBC External Events Register has shown that Naga was paid between £5,000 and £10,000 for hosting a Veuve Cliquot awards ceremony in London on 13 June.

On June 16, she was paid up to £5,000 for hosting an event for an organisation called Stardust.

Naga also picked up between £5,000 and £10,000 for being an interviewer for software firm NICE Systems on 25 June.

The Sun has contacted Naga’s representative for comment.

At the glitzy champers firm awards, she anchored the French company’s Bold Woman Award.

Naga has previously told how she works hard for her salary and has to be in the BBC Breakfast studio by 4.50am.

The TV star – who has opened up on her hidden health battle in recent years – then plays golf to unwind.

Talking about a typical day in her life, Naga – married to TV director James Haggar –  said: “My first alarm is at 3.45 and I’m in the BBC Breakfast studio by 4.50.

“I’m a terrible prevaricator. As a kid, my mum would have to physically pull me from my bed.

“My first thought is always: how long can I stay here before I have to drag my arse to the gym?

“I haven’t worn anything in bed since I was about 16.

“There’s something very luxurious and freeing about being naked and having clean sheets around you.

“I never wear make-up outside work – I’m quite lazy.

“I’ll rock up to Broadcasting House in jeans and trainers and a roll neck jumper, have porridge and a cup of tea at my desk, then we’re on air from 11 to 1pm.”

Talking about what she does to unwind, she said: “In summer I neglect my friends because the golf course beckons.

“On a perfect day I could be back home and teeing off at 3pm. My handicap is 6.1 but as long as the other person isn’t an utter dick who chats on about their own swing when I want to talk about mine.

“I’m quite blunt – I’ll happily play with anyone. I love the chat and the wine afterwards.

“But I’ll also happily whack my headphones in and find great joy playing on my own. Golf is a completely selfish pastime.”

Back in May Naga Munchetty was missing from BBC Breakfast for a second week – and Nina Warhurst stood in for her.

In August we reported that the fan favourite also went ‘missing‘ from our screens.

She has long been open about her brave health battle after being diagnosed with adenomyosis.

Adenomyosis is a condition that causes the lining of the womb to bury into the muscular wall of the womb.

Naga previously left her BBC Radio 5 Live listeners in shock when she confessed that as a result of her medical condition she was broadcasting to them in crippling pain each day.

Putin ‘ready to detonate nuke in Arctic’ as radioactive spike detected at NATO border near ‘Flying Chernobyl’ test site

TYRANT Vladimir Putin is all set to detonate nuclear weapons in the Arctic region at “any moment”, it has been revealed.

Strong traces of radioactive have been found along Norway’s border with Russia as the Kremlin says it is “fully ready” to test nuclear bombs for the first time since the Cold War.

Russian officials said today that if an order is given by the dictator, a test could go ahead immediately in the Arctic.

Top lords at the Kremlin are reportedly putting pressure on Putin to detonate an apocalyptic nuclear explosion as a warning to the West.

The test explosion would be at an old Soviet site first used 70 years ago in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

Director of the facility Rear-Admiral Andrei Sinitsyn said: “The test site is ready to resume full-scale testing activities. It is fully ready.

“The laboratory and testing facilities are ready. The personnel are ready. If the order is given, we will begin testing at any moment.”

He claimed the West has stepped up its monitoring, in a likely sign of concern over nuclear tests.

“Foreign technical intelligence is monitoring our activities on Novaya Zemlya,” he said.

Putin’s former space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin has demanded to kick off banned nuclear tests at Novaya Zemlya.

“We must make sure that [the West’s] buttocks begin to shake with fear,” he said.

A nuclear test is seen by some Putin propagandists as reinforcing his warning that permitting Western-made missiles to strike Russia would mean NATO is engaged in “war” against his country.

a map showing the location of norway and russia

Meanwhile, traces of radioactive Cesium-137 were found in patches alongside Norway’s border with Russia in September.

While the cause of the spike is unknown, the levels still appear to be higher than normal.

Experts fear that Russians are testing the deadly Burevestnik – a nuclear-powered cruise missile dubbed “Flying Chornobyl” – on the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.

It is capable of cruising in the air for days – even weeks – before blitzing enemy targets.

The missile is believed to be launched by a solid-fuel rocket motor.

Then a small nuclear reactor activates in flight, which potentially allows it to stay aloft threatening Western countries almost indefinitely.

Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) said that there has been some summer activity at the Burevestnik test site but it remains top secret.

“There are no official reports that the Burevestnik is tested, but indications can be seen by studying daily updated satellite images from the Arctic archipelago.

“We have seen several cargo ships and special purpose vessels in the waters outside Pankovo and over the last few weeks, Rosatom’s two large Il-76 transport planes have periodically been parked at the airport in Rogachevo at Novaya Zemlya.

“The blue-coloured aircraft are believed to conduct operations connected to the Burevestnik testings.”

Filters from Viksjøfjell and Svanhovd in Norway – close to the Russian border – are analysed once a week.

And the amount of Cesium found so far “poses no risk for humans or the environment.”

The Observer said “It is unlikely that such releases are coming from a naval reactor in operation at sea.

“Small leakages of Cesium-137 are more likely to appear during start-up or maintenance of a reactor or from handling spent nuclear fuel.”

Norway shares a 121-mile border inside the Arctic Circle with Russia’s highly militarised Murmansk region.

A report by the Nuclear Threat Initiative – a nonprofit arms control group – said Russia had conducted 13 known tests between 2017 and 2019, all of which were unsuccessful.

One test in 2019 led to the deaths of seven people who attempted to salvage the crashed top-secret missile.

Putin dubbed them “national heroes” without explaining the details of their deaths.

It comes as Russia today reinforced its preparations for nuclear war by staging drills involving giant Yars missile launchers in the Ivanovo region.

The Yars missiles are currently the main ground-based component of the Russian strategic nuclear force.

The Mach 25 missiles have a range of up to 7,500 miles, making them capable of striking the US.

Putin's not so deadly 'Flying Chernobyl' missile

MORE than a dozen tests of Burevestnik have been conducted by Russia and all of them have reportedly failed.

The Burevestnik is viewed by the Russian dictator as a game-changing “doomsday” weapon with an unlimited range.

It is seen by the Kremlin as a low-flying “stealth” cruise missile incapable of interception by existing Western air defences and delivering nuclear warheads anywhere around the globe.

Putin has called it “a radically new type of weaponry” with  “unlimited range and unlimited ability to manoeuvre”.

The dictator announced the weapon in 2018, one of five game-changing missile systems he claimed were superior to Western models.

Reports from the American intelligence suggest the rocket never managed to fly more than 35 km [22 miles], its longest flight lasted only two minutes.”

Eagle-eyed fans spot bizarre detail in Arsenal’s 2024-25 team photo and fear Martin Odegaard’s injury worse than feared

ARSENAL fans are panicking over Martin Odegaard’s injury – after spotting a subtle change to their usual squad photo.

The Norwegian star posed alongside his Gunners teammates in the team’s annual 25-man picture.

In 2022, with no trophy to display, the Gunners also opted against using any further props[/caption]

Odegaard is currently nursing a left ankle injury and missed Sunday’s North London Derby win over Tottenham.

The 25-year-old midfielder picked up the issue during international duty with Norway.

Odegaard limped off the pitch in tears following a rough challenge from Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner last Monday.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has since given little away on the severity of his captain’s knock.

Asked about Odegaard following Sunday’s 1-0 victory, he said: “We still have to wait and see, it’s not clear yet.”

Fans were quick to notice two balls had been put out in front of the assembled 25 players at the photoshoot.

One ball obscured Odegaard’s left ankle, with the other placed ahead of Bukayo Saka to seemingly create symmetry.

Arsenal’s squad photos have not followed a similar trend in recent years.

Arteta put the Community Shield in pride of place during the shoot in 2023, but no other objects were featured in the snap.

A year prior in 2022, when there was no trophy to display, the team opted against using any other props.

One Arsenal fan groaned in response: “They put the ball over Martin Odegaard’s left ankle, it’s not looking good bruv.”

Another eagle-eyed fan added: “Blocking Odegaard’s ankle with the ball. I know what you’re doing.”

While a third laughed: “If only they had trophies to make it less obvious. Oh wait…”

But a fourth countered: “Never would this be intentionally done by the club.”

And a fifth agreed: “Saka’s ankle was blocked too. It doesn’t mean anything.”

Odegaard joined Declan Rice and Mikel Merino on the sidelines as Arsenal saw off Spurs in Sunday’s derby.

His injury could be “significant”, according to The Athletic correspondent David Ornstein.

Ornstein told The Athletic FC podcast: “He was never going to make it, it was what Arteta said.

“And it looks like a significant injury, but look, we don’t know.

“The last I heard, they didn’t have full clarity from the scan still, because of the extent of the swelling, but the extent of the swelling concerns you, if you’re an Arsenal fan.”
