A MAJOR route which has been closed for construction for months has seen work thrown into chaos after an ancient mine opened up in the surface.
Plans for the £86 million route are now up in the air after the discovery of a nearly 10ft deep fissure the earth below.
An £86 million road-building project has been hit by a bizarre issue[/caption]
The entrance to an ‘unmapped’ ancient mine has opened in the middle of the work site[/caption]
The new A30 link road in Cornwall has been years in the making and has attracted a whopping funding package.
The idea is to connect two existing A-roads via a new 3.9-mile single carriageway and improve links to the growing economic hub of St Austell.
Initially due to be completed in Spring 2025, the project now faces uncertainty after an unexpected discovery.
A massive chasm has opened up right in the middle of the work site as it appears that the entrance to ancient mine was disturbed by the construction.
The crevice has gouged out about 10ft of earth, while at one end there is a “black hole” believed to be the mineshaft itself.
It is thought to lead to a long-forgotten tin mine that has remained “unmapped” for centuries.
The delay represents a significant hit to the taxpayer as both local and national government funding has gone into the project.
Work was already delayed by around two years on the “vital” road due to pandemic restrictions.
However, Cornwall Council insists that the road will be completed on schedule despite the mine opening.
A spokesperson said: “Given Cornwall’s rich mining history, it is not unusual for unmapped mining features to be discovered during the construction process.
“We have recently uncovered two features along the route and investigation works are underway to determine the best course of remediation.
“We do not anticipate any delays or additional costs as a consequence of this event and the road is still anticipated to be fully opened in Spring 2025.”

A MAJOR discount supermarket with more than 1,000 branches will close all stores on Boxing Day this year.
Aldi will be pulling down the shutters on all of its shops so its staff can spend more time with their families.
The discounter will close on Boxing Day, a day which tends to be pretty busy for shoppers,
This is on top of being shut on Christmas Day, as it is every year.
Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “Christmas is such a special period for many of our colleagues, and by keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day, Aldi gives them more time to spend with their loved ones.
“Customers will have plenty to look forward to in the run-up to Christmas, with exciting Christmas ranges hitting shelves in time for the festive season.”
Aldi has been closed its doors on Boxing Day for the past few years.
It comes after bargain retailers Home Bargains, John Lewis and Waitrose announced that they would also be shutting their doors on Boxing Day.
Almost all stores across the UK shut on Christmas Day, but there are also a handful of retailers that won’t open on Boxing Day either.
Most of us will slowly return to usual working hours over the following week, and so will UK shops and supermarkets.

CONDIMENT giant Hellmann’s has discontinued an ‘addictive’ mayonnaise flavour, leaving shoppers in despair.
Its Vegan Baconnaise will no longer be available to buy after the manufacturer confirmed it has been discontinued.

The firm this decision reflects changing shopper habits, with a shift in focus to its new and improved plant based range.
While many shoppers were saddened by the move, several voiced their concerns about the addictive nature of the product on Reddit.
One wrote: “I love that mayo but I can’t stop tasting it for like three to five days after eating it, the flavour haunts the tongue.”
In agreement, another person wrote: “It must be used sparingly.”
Another respondent had a more positive, or concerning view, depending how you look at it, writing: “I really hope they aren’t being discontinued, it’s become the only way I can eat a sandwich!”
However, despite the hopeful thinking of many, Hellmann’s took to X, writing: “Unfortunately our Hellmann’s Vegan Baconnaise has been discontinued. I am sorry about the inconvenience regarding this.”
But if you’re a big fan and are looking for an alternative to fill the void, we’ve found a few similar condiments you could try.
Hellmann’s Plant Based Mayo is still available, with a 400g jar costing £3.20 at Tesco. Or you could opt for Nando’s Vegan Perinaise Peri Peri Mayonnaise, with a 265G bottle costing £2.25 at Tesco.
Tips to save on your weekly food shop
What tips can you start implementing to save on your shopping
Buy in bulk
While space restrictions may play a part here, buying in bulk can often save you money in the long run.
Buy own brand
Every supermarket has its own brand products, which are often just as good as the branded options you are used to, but cheaper.
Use the freezer
This one goes hand in hand with buying in bulk, but stocking up on products and filling your freezer with them is a cost-effective method that also uses less energy.
Yellow sticker discounts
Something to keep an eye out for on your shopping rounds is yellow stickers, these indicate that the product has been reduced.
Use loyalty rewards
Saving up your loyalty points for expensive times of year can often help you get through some of the busier periods, such as Christmas.
Batch cook
A method to help avoid buying those ready meals while you’re out is batch cooking. This is much cheaper than buying food on the go.
Buy less meat
While this is an option some may choose to avoid, buying less meat and cooking more vegetarian meals is a great way to cut down on costs.
In more bad news for vegan sauce lovers, Heinzconfirmed back in June that its Vegan Salad Cream sauce had been discontinued.
Fans were quick to express their unrest at the decision on X, with one frustrated shopper writing: “Majorly disappointed today to find out Heinz Vegan Salad Cream Discontinued Salad Cream, has always been my favourite since a child.”
This came after a shopper noticed the sauce had gone missing from stores and contacted the manufacturer on X.
Heinz responded by confirming the news that the sauce had been disconnected.
A Hellmann’s spokesperson, says: “We’re always reviewing our products and ranges to reflect changing shopper habits and are focusing on launching our new and improved Hellmann’s Plant Based range, which provides shoppers with better value pack sizes and with a tastier-than-ever recipe that is now also a source of Omega 3.
“We will no longer be making Hellmann’s Vegan Baconnaise and are sorry for any disappointment.”

THE UFC’S record-breaking event at the Las Vegas Sphere will go down as a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
And SunSport were granted inside access into the stunning event, courtesy of Clash Royale.
The night started with a short film honouring Mexican fight culture.
Every bout began with a chapter extract from an animated movie produced by the UFC celebrating Mexico.
Fights had a unique LED backdrop – spanning 250ft tall and 400ft wide – with huge screens playing the action above the cage.
A dazzling Tale of The Tape lit up the screens with fighters facing off in holograms.
The Sphere is 366ft tall and 516ft wide with the full capacity 16,024 crowd selling out the place.
Machines also created additional effects as part of the 4D experience with confetti also reigning down onto fans’ seats.
Several famous faces were in attendance, including billionaire Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, rapper Chris Brown and celeb chef Gordon Ramsay.
MY SPHERE EXPERIENCE
WHEN I scanned my ticket to get into UFC 306 inside the £1.7billion Las Vegas Sphere - my expectations were high.
Within 30 minutes, they went not only met but exceeded.
The pay-per-view card kicked off with an animated movie celebrating Mexico’s fighting culture on the 250ft tall and 400ft wide LED screen.
Short movies played before every bout before a unique backdrop was displayed behind the UFC octagon as the action kicked off in the cage.
In an amazing cinematic touch, holograms of the two fighters lit up the screen before every fight.
Now, the action in the cage admittedly did not live up to the stunning build-up to each bout.
But I was so blown away by my surroundings that it really didn’t matter.
UFC boss Dana White insists, due to his contract with MGM, that his Vegas events must largely remain at the T-Mobile Arena.
But after a record £16.6m was made in ticket sales alone, this surely can’t be a one-and-done.
Although if it is, I’m proud to say I was there in what could be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Gordon Ramsay was stunned by the displays[/caption]

UFC 306 – also nicknamed Noche – welcomed eight new octagon girls all of Mexican descent.
Hannah Esparaza, Karla Espiritu, Valeria Galvan, Ayled Corenov, Daniela Houghton, and Ariadna Vidal, Mariel Elisa and Daniela Lunaleon lit up the cage.
They switched up outfits throughout fight night to match the Mexican themed backdrop, including all golden costumes.
