I’m an appliance pro – a common laundry mistake makes ‘clean’ clothes smell bad & causes hundreds of pounds in damage

IF your washing machine and clothes are starting to smell a little musty after a cycle, there’s an easy fix.

An appliance repair expert shared the common mistake that may be damaging your washer and preventing your clothes from getting clean.

TikTok user Renae explained why lots of suds in your washing machine is actually a bad sign[/caption]

In her viral video, Renae (@renduh) explained how suds can prevent your clothes from being cleaned and they can also cause damage to your washer.

According to the professional, detergent cleans your clothes by loosening the soil out of the fibres and flushing it out.

This action creates a thing layer of trapped air, which forms bubbles in your machine.

These bubbles pick up the soils which are still loose, and both should ideally be removed during the rinse cycle.

However, if you add to much detergent to your load, your machine won’t have enough time or water to effectively any extra suds.

“When your washer goes to drain, detergent bubbles will remain on top of the laundry,” Renae warned her audience.

Once your washer has drained, the spin cycle will pull the excess water out but the soils will only be redeposited into your clothing.

Any excess dirt will start to build up in your machine, causing it to smell.

Renae referenced an explanation by Tide, which clarified that too many suds prevent your clothes from rubbing against each other, the very action which cleans them.

“If you’re seeing suds after the rinse cycle, your clothes are not getting clean,” she explained.

This error can also cause a suds lock in your machine, meaning there are too many bubbles for your drain pump to pull out.

Renae compared the dilemma to drink a frothy drink with whipped cream on top.

Once you have drank the liquid, it can be difficult to suck the remaining cream through your straw.

The bubbles become too light and cling to the inside of the cup, making the impossible to reach without moving your straw.

Since your machine can’t move the drain like a straw, this build-up remains inside.

More laundry tips

  • Dry your whites outside: the sun’s natural rays help to bleach materials.
  • Hot washes often lock them in stains rather than lift them, stick to 60 degrees max.
  • Tennis balls can help to soften towels and bed linens as well as shorten their drying time.
  • Air drying, using fabric conditioner, and storing in a cool place once dry can help boost scents.
  • Freezing clothing items can help freshen them up.
  • Keep coloured fabrics bright with a little fabric conditioner but not too much or it will build up over time.
  • Wash clothes with a zip or delicate items inside out to prevent snagging.
  • Fix shrunken clothes by reshaping them when wet and laying flat to dry.
  • Run a short warm wash with about 450ml of vinegar to tackle a smelly machine.
  • NEVER put wet wool in the dryer.

TikTok users shared their thoughts on the advice in the comments section.

“I never knew bubbles were so gross,” wrote one disgusted follower.

“Dang, you’re good. This information is SO useful,” said another commenter.

“That’s why I always do a second rinse,” commented a third person.

“Great explanation and example,” wrote another impressed TikTok user.

Fresh row erupts as Sue Gray is paid MORE than her boss Keir Starmer – ‘after refusing a smaller salary’

SUE Gray was in the firing line today after it emerged that she refused to be paid less than her boss the Prime Minister.

While Sir Keir Starmer earns £166,700, his all-powerful chief of staff pockets £170,000 from the taxpayer.

Ms Gray’s salary is also higher than her Conservative predecessor and any serving Cabinet Minister.

The row deepened as it was claimed the No10 supremo rejected advice to be paid slightly less than the PM.

A source told the BBC: “It was suggested that she might want to go for a few thousand pounds less than the prime minister to avoid this very story. She declined.”

Ms Gray – a former civil servant who memorably led the Partygate inquiry – has been at the centre of a vicious Downing Street briefing war since Labour took office.

Millions of Brits could have benefits CUT as Streeting hints at changes

'HEINOUS CRIMES'

Huw Edwards’ weak sentence MUST be reviewed by government, says Tory MP

A series of leaks have emerged claiming she has locked horns with strategy guru Morgan McSweeney and Cabinet Secretary Simon Case.

The latest revelation also comes at a febrile time for the government over the axing of universal winter fuel payments for pensioners.

Tory candidate Robert Jenrick said: “£20,000 a year pay rise for Sue Gray. £600 cuts for some pensioners on as little as £13,000 a year. Starmer’s hypocrisy reeks.

Conservative MP Robbie Moore added: “The only pensioner better off under this new Labour Government.”

And it comes amid growing pressure on Sir Keir over thousands of donations from a Labour peer to pay for him and his wife Victoria’s clothes.

A Cabinet Office spokesman told the BBC: “It is false to suggest that political appointees have made any decisions on their own pay bands or determining their own pay.

“Any decision on special adviser pay is made by officials not political appointees. As set out publicly, special advisers cannot authorise expenditure of public funds or have responsibility for budgets.”

The October Prime Day 2024 — officially called Prime Big Deal Days — will run from midnight on 8th October to midnight on 9th October.

The Prime Day deals will be exclusively available for Prime members to access, and the sale is a must for beauty lovers wanting to stock up on essentials or gifts ahead of the festive season.

The two-day event is a perfect time to snap up deep discounts on pricey beauty electrical items, with bargains on Dyson Airwrap dupes, Revlon hair tools and ghd straighteners all appearing in the sale in previous years.

If you want full access to the deals when they go live, you will need to make sure you sign up for a 30-day Amazon Prime free trial.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day is the annual sales event exclusively for Amazon Prime members.

It first began in July 2015 as a way for the retailer to celebrate Prime members during its 20th birthday anniversary.

But it has since evolved into one of the biggest shopping events of the year for Amazon fans.

During Prime Day, Amazon offers incredible savings across a wide range of categories, with new deals launching every few minutes.

Over the last few years, following the pandemic, Amazon has chosen to host two Prime Day events each year, one in July and another in October.

The October event, which is called the Prime Big Deal Days event, is perfectly timed for organised shoppers who want to stock up on Christmas gifts at a fraction of their normal price.

How to take part in Amazon Prime Day?

The next Prime Day installment for 2024 is just around the corner...

To take advantage of all the Prime Day deals, you’ll need to be an Amazon Prime member.

If you’re not already a member, and you’ve never had a Prime account before, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial to access the deals.

By activating your free trial you’ll get immediate access to the Prime Day deals, and access to the rest of the Prime membership benefits, which include free shipping, access to Prime Video and Prime Music.

Once you’re a Prime member, simply visit the Prime Day page on the Amazon website to start shopping.

If after 30 days you decide you don’t want the membership, remember to cancel before the end of the trial period or you’ll be charged.

A monthly Prime membership costs £8.99, or you can pay £95 for an annual subscription.

When is the Prime Big Deal Days 2024 event?

Amazon has confirmed the next Prime Day will be the Prime Big Deal Days event in October.

The sale will kick off on 8th October until 9th October, with just 48 hours for shoppers to take advantage of discounts across top brands like Dyson, Revlon, Elemis, Cloud Nine, Elizabeth Arden and more.

The highly anticipated event spans over 48 hours, with a mix of offers ranging from lightning deals available for a limited time to deals for the duration of the event.

More recently exclusive discounts have been made available to Amazon Prime members before the two-day event starts, shoppers can head to the Amazon deals hub to check out current offers.

What is good to buy during Prime Day?

Prime Day offers discounts on a wide range of products, making it an excellent time to stock up on essentials or treat yourself to something special.

It is a particularly good time to purchase more expensive items such as beauty electricals or premium skincare and makeup products as often savings are comparable to other seasonal sales throughout the year.

Shoppers can check Amazon pricing over time using platforms like camelcamelcamel or price comparison sites such as Idealo and PriceSpy to ensure they really are getting the best possible deal before taking the plunge.

In terms of beauty buys, the biggest cash savings will be on high-ticket beauty items such as hair straighteners, IPL hair removal machines, electric shavers and toothbrushes.

But the sale is also a great chance to bulk buy everyday beauty essentials, which is more cost-effective in the long run.

In previous years there have been huge savings on premium ad designer beauty names such as Shark beauty, Lancôme, Elizabeth Arden, Kérastase, Colour Wow, Elemis, ghd and OPI.

However, shoppers will also find plenty of everyday skincare and makeup brands like Cerave, BioOil, Maybelline and Olay.

How to find Amazon Prime Day deals?

Finding Amazon Prime Day deals is easier than ever thanks to the dedicated Prime Day page on the Amazon website.

On the deals hub page, you can browse thousands of offers across all categories.

You can also follow Amazon on social media for real-time updates and sneak peeks at upcoming deals.

In my opinion, to make the most of Prime Day you should keep an eye out for deals leading up to the event by browsing the ‘Upcoming Deals’ section on the Amazon website or app.

You can also set reminders with an Alexa device, and add items to personalised Wish Lists or Save For Later lists.

The added bonus is that Alexa will automatically alert you when a deal on your favourite item is live.

What is a lightning deal?

There are a variety of different Prime Day deals to look out for during the event.

Alongside ‘deals of the day’, Prime shoppers can get their hands on limited-time offers called lightning deals.

These lightning deals come in limited quantities and once they are sold out they aren’t restocked – making them even more in-demand.

In the past, we have seen Prime Exclusive offers crop up, which only Prime members can take advantage of.

But these offers are often early access deals that get released ahead of the main sale event and often entice non-members to join up for the extra discounts.

On rare occasions, you will find discounts on newer released beauty or makeup items, but they often sell out fast.
