Coronation Street fans furious over ‘missing’ scene as they slam ‘tedious’ cult plot

CORONATION Street fans have slammed the ITV soap over its “tedious” cult plot, which saw the leader Rowan repeatedly manipulate Leanne and target other Weatherfield residents.

Things finally turned a corner when Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) turned against Rowan Cunliffe (Emrhys Cooper) and the Institute, but the storyline has since come to an abrupt end, leading fans to call out the soap over a “missing” final scene.

But earlier this month Leanne finally stood up to the villainous Rowan[/caption]

In recent weeks, Corrie fans have watched as Leanne has been completely drawn in by Rowan and the Institute.

The pair even convinced Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) to invest her £40,000 inheritance to her the cult, a decision she later came to regret.

While Leanne’s intentions were pure, Rowan has been scamming the residents of Weatherfield from the off.

Thankfully, Leanne wised up to his manipulative ways and copied files off his computer, which proved he and the Institute were involved in illegal activities.

Luckily, she sent a copy of the records to Amy before Rowan came barging into Leanne’s flat, trying to manipulate her once more.

Leanne played along and pretended to hand over the files but secretly sent out a distress call to Amy, who brought along Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) and her sister Toya Battersby (Georgia Taylor) for backup.

This scene was the dramatic climax ITV fans had long been waiting for, but fans aren’t happy they didn’t see Rowan get his comeuppance on screen.

Confused about the storyline, one viewer took to social media to ask: “Is that now the end of the Rowan/Cult/Institute storyline?”

While another Corrie fan raged: “For months we’ve sat through and watched the tedious play out on our screens – all hoping Rowan gets his comeuppance – but we didn’t even get the pleasure of seeing him getting arrested on screen, interviewed and charged.”

It seems Rowan’s arrest is simply continuing off screen as everyone who the Institute targeted tries to get their lives back on track.

“All we got was Nick mentioning almost as an afterthought that Rowan had been arrested and was going to prison,” one viewer explained.

Slamming ITV bosses, another wrote: “Absolutely awful stuff from Corrie bosses!”

“You think that’s bad, they’ve still not buried Robert” fumed another fan who referred to the death of Robert Preston after he was shot on Christmas Day in 2019.

Corrie fans feel that the soap is missing a final scene to wrap up the storyline, and it’s making them want to switch off.

Most complained about soap storylines

Over the years, all three of the main soaps have featured plots that have had even die-hard fans reaching for their phones and laptops so they can get in touch with Ofcom and complain. Here are just some of the most scandalous…

  • EastEnders baby theft: 13,400 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2011, EastEnders was flooded with complaints when Ronnie Branning (RIP) swapped her baby for the dead son of Kat Moon. The storyline drew the most number of objections in the soap’s long history and saw it roundly criticised by campaigners – with 13,400 flying in over the course of the storyline. Some viewers called it “distressing” and “horrific” but Ofcom ruled the scenes were not “unduly disturbing”.
  • Emmerdale dog-napping: 550 Ofcom complaints – Back in 2016, Ross Barton and Charity Dingle came up with a plan to steal a dog and hold it ransom – but viewers didn’t like it one bit. The nation’s pet owners rose up, insisting the storyline would encourage copycats (not to mention copydogs). Complaints over two episodes totalled a staggering 550 and soap writers quickly learnt you don’t mess with animal-lovers.
  • Coronation Street double murder: 546 Ofcom complaints – Marginally less people complained about a gruesome double murder than objected to a dog-napping plot when Pat Phelan was at the centre of a spate of killings. First he forced Andy Carver to shoot dead Vinny Ashford – and then Pat killed Andy. All the bloodshed back in 2017 proved to be too much for some viewers, who lodged complaints in vast numbers about the “violent scenes”.
  • “If that really was the end of the cult story, then it’s another nail in the Corrie coffin!” a sixth viewer raged. “Is there actually any more room for nails at this point?!

They continued: “From the way its been spoken about in interviews, it sounded like the Institute was going to be getting other residents as members and then they would be publicly exposed to the whole street but no, its literally only Amy who is sort of incised into them for the best part of a half an episode for her to be conned out the money Deidre left her in the second half and then Leanne exposes Rowan who in turn is then arrested off-screen.”

Stars Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have officially bowed out of the long-running programme.

It comes as observant fans spotted a discrete throwback in the trio’s final episode.

Writing in an online forum, one noted: “James wore his original Botswana sunglasses for the final scene.”

Another agreed, as they penned: “Lots of details and subtle references for long time fans in this last one.”

While a third commented: “Pretty cool he still has them. I lose sunglasses on a monthly basis.”

The Grand Tour launched following its stars’ departure from BBC‘s Top Gear in 2015.

Altogether, they helmed 46 episodes of the Prime Video show – with their finale being the sole episode of series 6.

However, it has previously been reported The Grand Tour will return with an all new line-up.

Jeremy – who also stars in Clarkson’s Farm for the streamer – revealed the “real” reason behind the trio’s exit.

The 64-year-old penned in The Sunday Times: “After 36 years of talking about cars on television, I’m packing it in because I’m too old and too fat to get into the cars I like and not interested in driving those I don’t.”

Speaking at a screening for the trio’s final Grand Tour episode, Jeremy elaborated: “It gets you tonight, it is the end. It didn’t at the end of filming.

“We said three years ago we would do one more then end it.

“We had driven cars higher and faster than anyone else so we did wonder what else we could do with a car.

“We had run out of places to go, we had run out of things to do. And I had got fat.”

The group’s final scenes also hit home for viewers, as one wrote online: “I watched the first and last specials back to back for my watch party.

It promises to be an emotional one as the trio set out on one epic final adventure in Zimbabwe and reflect on their 22-year-long working relationship and friendship.

“I cried during both because I knew what I was watching.

“I invited friends and family and no one showed up, but I think it made it more special for me.”

A fellow fan agreed, commenting: “It was an emotional end. I’ve been watch TG since 2008, and it sucks it’s done.”

The Grand Tour is streaming on Prime Video.

Mum-of-12 and enormous family on the run after ‘one of the worst street fights ever seen’ as judge slams ‘utter cowards’

A mother-of-12 and her huge family is on the run from police after “one of the worst street fights ever seen”.

The brawl in Birmingham has led to reports of Ellen Sweeney, 39, Thomas Sweeney, 43, and Thomas Sweeney junior, 18, fleeing to the Republic of Ireland.

The family members have twice failed to appear at court in relation to the disorder in the early hours of July 15 last year.

After the second no-show in a fortnight on Tuesday, a judge deemed them as “cowards” whilst sentencing the absentees who have all previously pled guilty to violent disorder charges.

Last year, the Sweeneys, David Mongan, 18, and at least four other relatives were involved in the drunken attack outside of Glamourous nightclub in the Gay Village district.

One victim was left with a laceration to the chest after being cut with a glass bottle, whilst another who suffered blows to the head has since experienced seizures.

Another was repeatedly punched and stamped whilst on the ground until he was knocked unconscious.

Despite the three attackers fleeing before their sentencing, Mongan, of Frederick Road, Stechford, was jailed for three years.

Whilst appearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Mongan admitted violent disorder and three separate shoplifting offences.

During sentencing, Judge Dean Kershaw said: “You are all cowards, complete and utter cowards, engaging in violence against people when they were intoxicated and drunk.

“Using that mob culture to attack people in that way, this is one of the worst violent disorders in this city with multiple people being attacked, assaulted, kicked in the body and kicked in the head.”

The court heard from prosecutor Alura Bather who explained how the violence erupted after Thomas senior got into a verbal spat with another individual.

Bather said that the spoken altercation on Hurst Street then turned “physically aggressive”.

Whilst Senior made claims to being racially abused, no further proof was brought forward to strengthen these claims.

Other evidence was presented, including CCTV of Thomas Jr and Mongan chasing the male through the Gay Village.

The latter then proceeded to knock him to the floor and was counted to have delivered 21 punches and 14 kicks to the victim.

He could even be seen punching a second member of the public who attempted to stop the violence.

Thomas senior then managed to join in whilst Ellen Sweeney seemingly attempted to protect the man from her own family before she was dragged away.

The prosecutor continued to explain how Ellen Sweeney then entered into a verbal dispute with another woman who Ellen punched and called a “w***e”.

Violent scenes were exasperated with the woman’s friend being glassed across her chest by one of the defendants’ family members.

Whilst another man who appeared to be sat on a large concrete block, not involved with the fighting, was punched to the floor as well.

Thomas Jr then proceeded to lash out at a taxi driver whilst Ellen Sweeney could be seen throwing further punches at someone else.

Continuing their chase, the family did not let up despite the female victims attempting to flee on foot and failing to flag down a bin lorry driver.

The pursuit continued with Mongan punching and kicking one of the women until the victim was on the floor.

Police arrested some of the individuals involved once they arrived at the scene soon after.

After claiming Thomas Jr was due to get married, the Sweeney family members were bailed at a previous hearing to an address in Croydon, London.

The Metropolitan Police have blamed new staff and bail books not being regularly checked as reasons for their absence and breach of bail until August 21 going unnoticed.

Whilst earlier enquiries were made to the Croydon address, police attended again at 2am on the morning of their sentencing and found the lights still on and a completely empty property.

The court were then informed how Ellen Sweeney had been the family’s main point of contact and had even phoned her solicitors the previous day to suggest she had got the court date wrong and taken the family to Scotland.

Alarm bells were only raised after an investigation into Ellen Sweeney’s phone showed a location in the Republic of Ireland.

Judge Kershaw said: “It’s all nonsense. She’s in Ireland ringing on the 29th saying she thought it (the court date) was tomorrow.

“What is she going to do swim across The Channel? This is just a ruse. I warned them.”

He then added that Interpol and the Irish Authorities would be involved.

Meanwhile, Mongan was remanded in custody and has since been sentenced to three years and four months for shoplifting more than £8,500-worth of goods which he carried out with others.

Mongan’s defence counsel, Philip Brunt, described him as “immature” and “intoxicated” during the violent street attack.

Thomas Jr was sentenced to two years and four months detention, with Morgan Pirone mitigating that his actions were out of character.

After his defence counsel, Jordan Warren, made claims that Thomas Sr has suffered from a “significant amount of trauma”, the father received two years and ten months.

The mother-of-12, Ellen Sweeney received one year and 11 months after her defence, Jas Dhaliwal, suggested she was “extremely ashamed”.

Judge Kershaw considered offering Ellen a suspended sentence but feared she would not comply with community-based punishment after she failed to appear in court.

Metropolitan police have been approached for comment in regard to the breach of bail conditions going unnoticed until August 21.
