I ended up paying someone else’s mortgage after Nationwide took money from my account – then bank ordered ME to pay out
A FURIOUS Nationwide customer ended up paying someone else’s mortgage due to a banking error – and yet he was the one asked to cough up £500.
Adrian Froggatt, 36, was shocked to discover that £763 had been taken out of his account for a mortgage payment in May, despite not having a mortgage with the bank.
Adrian Froggatt ended up paying someone else’s mortgage[/caption]After complaining about the cock-up, the operations manager was told that the mortgage broker had made a mistake when inputting another person’s sort code and account number.
This had then led to his account being mistakenly charged.
Adrian was refunded the money and sent an additional £500 – which he was told was compensation.
The bank then demanded this £500 back, claiming it was in fact cashback owed on the mortgage.
It admitted that an employee had made a mistake in thinking the sum was compensation money.
Recounting the £763 withdrawal, Adrian told the Telegraph: “It popped me into my overdraft for a couple of days, until they had refunded someone else’s mortgage payment.”
He added that the incident had caused “concern about how it was that they managed to take someone else’s mortgage out of my bank account.”
He continued: “The week before it had happened we put an offer in on a house, so I was getting bank statements ready and I had a mortgage adviser meeting a few days later.
“It bewilders me that they’ve had this massive error, and then it’s flagged up and they have paid the cash back in, but they’ve never fixed the original error.
“It’s just ridiculous how it has all come about.”
The disgruntled customer added that he would be changing banks as soon as his own mortgage (with another lender) was sorted, saying he had “lost all faith in [Nationwide] as a bank”.
Despite the incident sending Adrian into his overdraft, he initially only received £150 in compensation, followed by a further £50 after the second cock-up.
A customer service agent apologised for “not meeting expectations” but confirmed the bank would still be withdrawing the £500.
However, after being approached, Nationwide finally agreed to let Adrian keep the money.
Adrian said he was “delighted”.
Before this development, a Nationwide spokesperson said: “We apologise to our customer after an error by a mortgage broker meant a direct debit was wrongly set up on his account.
“Unfortunately, the cashback our mortgage customers were due was also incorrectly sent to him.
“As the customer shouldn’t have received the £500, we have requested the amount be re-debited from his account.
“However, we accept we should have been clearer on the initial phone call about the cashback. In recognition of the inconvenience caused by this issue, we have offered compensation of £200.”
What to do if your bank mistakenly removes money from your account
- Contact your bank as soon as possible – they’ll investigate how the mistake has occurred and maybe offer you compensation
- The bank has eight weeks to deal with your complaint – so keep a record of the date you sent it
- Gather all the evidence relating to the incident – including bank statements and correspondence
- If you’re not satisfied with the bank’s response, get in touch with the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS)
- You must do this within 6 months of the bank’s final response or from the end of the eight week period if they haven’t responded

Only a true genius can spot the 10 differences between those two busy park pictures in 27 seconds
PUZZLE solvers have been challenged to crack this unique optical illusion that has baffled the minds of many.
Only a true genius with a high IQ and a perfect 20/20 vision can spot all the differences between these two pictures in under 27 seconds.
Everyone can see the people having a picnic, feeding ducks, playing sports and exercising at the park.
But there are 10 differences between the pictures – can you spot them all?
The unique brainteaser has been devised by Watches2U, who released it to mark the final month of summer, with the retailer challenging people to spot the differences in under 60 seconds.
They said: “Though the sun is shining and the birds are singing in these scenes, the puzzle is no picnic in the park.
“To solve it, make sure to pay particular attention to the cute critters roaming the area, as well as subtle changes in sports activities such as yoga and football.
“Watches2U hope that the brainteaser provides entertainment for all ages during these still very uncertain times, as well as inspiring readers to get outside and make the most of the remainder of the summer.”
It is indeed one of the toughest brainteasers ever created – and you may end up losing your mind trying to work out the picture.
But with the sharpest eyes and the strongest minds, you stand a great chance of succeeding.
Although it may seem like an ordinary image, this is no easy feat, and the average person gives up after a minute.
But you can try your luck and see if you can crack the challenge and beat these people.
And you have just seven seconds to solve it and become a winner.
So buckle up, set the timer, and test your puzzle-solving skills.
But did you know that solving optical illusions is a great way of training your brain and improving creative thinking?
Brainteasers are purposefully designed to trick our vision and can be used as simple determiners of intelligence.
How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?
ENGAGING in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.
Optical illusions make a little bit more sense when you learn that our eyes have very little to do with what we see and it is our brains that play the key role in creating images and trying to protect us from the potential threats around us.
Our brain is constantly trying to make sense of the world at the quickest pace it can despite the world being in 3D and the images on our retinas being in 2D.
It can be really difficult for your brain to interpret everything at once so it will often take shortcuts and give you a simplified version of what you see so you can have quicker reaction times if the object you’re looking at looks dangerous.
When you look at an object what you’re really seeing is the light that bounced off of it and entered your eye, which is converted into electrical impulses that your brain then turns into an image.
Our brains can warp straight lines if an object in the middle of them looks like it’s drawing closer as it wants to emphasize the potential threat.
Different colours and light and dark can make the same-sized objects look different or make patterned images look like they’re spinning.
Some benefits include:
- Cognitive stimulation: These activities challenge the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
- Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
- Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
- Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
- Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
- Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.
So you might want to try The Sun’s wide range of optical illusions created to stimulate the deepest parts of your brain.
The answer to our original puzzle is coming up, as well as some more challenging tasks to try.
In this mind-bending image, everyone can count the ducks but if you can find the hidden needle among the reeds in less than seven seconds you may have 20/20 vision.
Another tricky brainteaser features a gnarled tree but only those with high IQ can spot a sleepy cat hiding on it.
If that’s still not hard enough for you, then have a go at spotting the hidden broom amongst the clothes in less than five seconds.
Or you can have a go at figuring out the hidden message in this band’s cover art that has confused fans for years.
Lastly, puzzle fanatics have been left scratching their heads trying to find the lost feather in just 12 seconds.
Coming back to our challenge – were you able to solve the mind-bending optical illusion?
If you are still scratching your head trying to figure out the confusing picture, we’ve marked the solution for you – scroll down to find it.
Congratulations to those who solved the puzzle in under a minute.
But if you manage to solve it in just 27 seconds, you are a genius with a perfect 20/20 vision.

Classy roadster from iconic brand can hit 169 mph & is available for less than the price of Britain’s cheapest new car
BRITS can pick up a classy roadster with a frightening top speed for less than the price of the nation’s cheapest new car.
The light-weight convertible is widely considered a modern classic by petrolheads and is often talked up as, for the money, one of the best value sports cars on the second-hand market.
The iconic Porsche Boxster, the six-cylinder mini-beast that was first introduced by the German marque in 1996, is considered a fun, relatively affordable car to own and run.
To some, it’s considered a poor man’s version of the 911, but the Boxster is quite different to its more-famous brother – with its mid-engine layout making it unique from a 911 with more stable, less challenging feel.
The original Boxster was a breath of fresh air when it was released ahead of the new millennium, and saved Porsche from bankruptcy.
Over the years, there have been four generations of Boxster – with the 718 Boxster released in 2016.
Older models, such as the Mark 2 987 model, released between 2005 and 2012, are beginning to enter collector territory with many fans of modern classics rushing to pick them up.
We were able to find a particularly eye-catching example on the Autotrader website for just £9,999.
That’s a fair bit less than the Dacia Sandero, which currently ranks as the UK’s cheapest new car at £12,955.
The second-hand model, which is from 2007 and has 101,000 miles on the clock, features a 3.4-litre engine and a manual transmission – and, as it’s the 987 S, can hit a top speed of 169 mph.
According to the list, this Boxster even comes with £13,000 worth of optional extras.
Earlier this year, Sun Motors spoke with a car expert who specialises in modern classics.
James Russell, of the Motor Grid, spoke very highly of the Boxster, especially the Mk1 model.
James said: “The perfectly balanced, perfect under £10,000 sports car has got to be the 987 Boxster.
“Manual, flat-six, you just can’t go wrong. It’s perfect.”
How the Boxster saved Porsche
By Michael Golson
Today, Porsche is a financial juggernaut, and the company’s profits are the envy of the car industry.
But two decades ago, things were very different for the German giants.
A recession, coupled with their uncompetitive lineup of ageing motors, led to dwindling sales that pushed them to the brink of ruin.
But the release of the Boxster in 1996 changed that.
Porsche were able to sell 7,500 cars in the US and Canada and by 1997, that number had nearly doubled. 20 years later, in 2017, that number topped 54,000.
That’s why the Boxster is considered one of the most successful but controversial sports cars to hit the market in recent times.
Over the years, Porsche purists have taken its water-cooled, mid-engine layout as an affront to the brand’s iconic rear-engine, then-air-cooled 911.
But the car’s supporters often praise the first-gen Boxster for its superb driving dynamics that defined its category.
What’s more, the windfall from the release of the Boxster allowed Porsche to make changes that put the company on the path to long-term success.
Recently, it was revealed that another legendary Porsche sports car was set to be reimagined for the 21st century – some 37 years after it was first launched.
Elsewhere, VW have unveiled a special edition hot hatchback that’s inspired by a legendary model from 1990s.

A BRITISH student has plunged off a cliff on a quad bike leaving her with horror injuries.
Maddy Morris is now warning other tourists over the “death traps” after the horror accident while visiting family in Corfu, Greece.

The 24-year-old had decided to rent a quad bike for the week to explore the island and took a trip out on the vehicle with her pal to celebrate her birthday.
She said: “We were only driving 20mph so we weren’t going fast or anything. I was driving and my friend was on the back.
“There were loads of cars overtaking us so we were going really slow.
“We were around an hour and a half into the drive and were up quite high, but far away from the edge.”
However, Maddy and her friend veered off the side of the cliff.
They tumbled nearly 10 feet onto the ground before the quad bike landed on top of them pinning them to the ground.
Luckily, the pair had landed on a ledge as the sea was at the bottom.
The student nurse, who lives near Manchester, says she has no idea why the vehicle suddenly deviated off-track – blaming a mechanical fault or uneven terrain.
Maddy said: “We don’t know if it was a faulty bike or dodgy terrain or lost control of the steering. I thought I was going to die. I was seeing visions of people I loved as I was falling.
“You never think something like this is going to happen to you. I must’ve blacked out because I remember waking up on the ground – it was very scary.
“The wheels were still running when it was on top of us so I think that’s why I got so many injuries on my left side.
“I managed to squeeze out a bit through a gap as we were both pinned underneath it. We were pinned for a few minutes.”
Maddy and her friend were picked up off the side of the road by passers-by and rushed to hospital with multiple injuries.
Maddy suffered superficial grazes[/caption] She says she will never go quad biking again[/caption]She said: “I’d been on quad bikes before so knew how to drive them. It was very unexpected. We don’t know why it tilted down the cliff.
“Luckily there were people driving behind us who were able to push the quad bike from on top of us. We could’ve easily fallen further. I’m so glad I was wearing my helmet.”
Maddy was left battered and bruised after the accident – suffering a fractured scapula as well as other superficial injuries.
Now, the student is warning others to stay away from quad bikes after nearly losing her life last month.
She said: “I thought I’d broken the whole left side of my body because I couldn’t feel anything. I didn’t have insurance so I’ve learned my lesson there – we had to pay for treatment.
“We self-charged because we wanted to enjoy the rest of the week. It had ruined my birthday.
“I’ll never go on a quad bike again. I thought I would be fine because I’d been on quad bikes before – and it’s just the norm out there, everyone drives one. I thought I was safe.
“I wouldn’t advise renting a quad bike to anyone. They’re deathtraps. My helmet definitely saved my life.”
Brit tourist in horror quad bike crash on Zante
By Zeenia Naqvee
AN UNLUCKY Welsh tourist that was knocked off of a quad bike after a speedy car struck her face was left with gruesome injuries.
Holly Thomas, 21, from South Wales, was enjoying a trip to Greek island paradise with her family before a ‘traumatising’ incident.
The family-of-four jetted off to Zante from Bristol Airport on June 5 for a week in the sun, before splashing out €250 on two quad bikes.
On day 3 of their trip they opted to use the bikes to explore one of the island’s most famed attractions – the stunning Blue Caves.
Pontypool native Holly, claims a car travelling at 50mph hit the back of her quad bike on the way back, sending her flying through the air.
Graphic photos show Holly’s face covered in scrapes and bruises, and a large swollen ‘blood pool’ on the back of her right leg, also said to be caused by the crash.
The Fine Enforcement Officer was rushed to a local hospital where she underwent a brain scan and had to have stitches on her head.
Holly was tragically chained to her room in the all-inclusive hotel for the rest of the trip to recover.
She flew back to Britain on June 12 and is still recovering at home.
Doctors have warned that her injuries could take months to heal and she vows never to use a quad bike ever again.
Champions League club appear to play in special kit in order to comply with fussy Uefa rule
SPORTING LISBON were forced to make a subtle change to their kit for their Champions League opener to comply with Uefa rules.
The Portuguese champions played host to Lille on Tuesday night as they returned to Europe’s premier competition after one year away.
And they kicked things off in style with a comfortable 2-0 win – which included a stunner from defender Zeno Debast.
Former Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres also got on the scoresheet for the hosts.
It was the first of Sporting‘s eight fixtures in the new-look Champions League.
The others will come against PSV, Sturm Graz, Manchester City, Arsenal, Club Brugge, RB Leipzig and Bologna.
However, the strip Sporting wear in domestic competitions has been altered for European matches.
That is because Uefa rules dictate that if a shirt has three or more colours, one must be “clearly dominant”.
Sporting’s shirt contains white, green and black stripes.
But in order to ensure one was the focal point of the shirt, one of the white stripes near the bottom of the jersey was changed to black by designers Nike.

This meant the black dominated the shirt, meaning the kit did not break any Uefa regulations.
It is expected they will have to do the same for their remaining games when they wear their home strip.
