My husband has sunk into a deep depression since we separated

DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE my husband and I separated, he has sunk into a deep depression.

All I want is for him to come home to me and our children, but I don’t know how to help him.

I’m 42 and he’s 44. We’ve been married for 10 years.

We were having some problems and, last year, had a huge row which culminated in a joint decision to split.

He moved out into a bedsit. I realised I wanted to try again with our marriage and told him.

He says he still loves me and doesn’t want a divorce but he doesn’t feel ready to come home.

Since he left, he’s gone rapidly downhill mentally.

He used to see the children at home once a week, but has stopped. I can’t send them there because his place is too small and dirty.

He isn’t eating properly, and is so withdrawn and miserable – a shadow of himself.

I’m worried about the effect on our kids.

My daughter, seven, just wants her daddy back.

DEIDRE SAYS: I know you want your husband back home, but it doesn’t sound like he’s in the right frame of mind for this to happen at the moment.

He needs to get his depression diagnosed and treated, so it’s important that he sees his GP.

Make it clear you’re there for him because you care, but don’t put any pressure on him.

Costliest iPhone mistake you can make is scarily common – I’m shocked more people don’t know as it saves you hundreds

IF you’ve had your iPhone for a while now, don’t make a costly mistake that you’ll regret.

If it’s starting to get slow and the battery life just isn’t holding up any more, don’t rush out to upgrade. Please.

a row of apple iphones are lined up in a row
Apple
The new iPhone 16 Pro is out – but you might not need to rush out to buy it just because your current phone is slow[/caption]

WHAT’S GOING WRONG WITH YOUR IPHONE?

The problem with all smartphones – including your iPhone – is that they have lithium-ion batteries inside.

They’re a great battery choice because they’re cheap to make, are easily rechargeable, and hold a fair amount of juice.

But lithium-ion batteries degrade over time as you charge and discharge them.

For instance, you’d expect a phone battery to hold about 80% of its original charge after 500 full discharges.

And that’s probably going to take you about two years to hit.

You can even check this number yourself.

Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see the Maximum Capacity for your iPhone.

And depending on your iOS and model, you can also see how many charge cycles you’ve gone through too.

The obvious downside here is that the longer you hold onto a phone, the worse the battery life will get.

That doesn’t just affect battery life either – it also hits performance.

Your iPhone will eventually start to reduce its performance to better-protect the battery from getting worse.

So you can end up with an old iPhone that has generally fine working parts – a great camera and powerful processor – but that holds less charge and doesn’t perform like it used to.

Now iPhones don’t come cheap, so if you forked out hundreds for one then you’ll want it to last.

It might be tempting to upgrade to the latest model – like Apple’s new iPhone 16 – but hold your horses. There’s a better way.

a screenshot of the battery health screen on an iphone
The Sun / Apple
The iPhone has a page that shows your battery’s maximum capacity – just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health[/caption]

SWAP THAT BATTERY!

You can just head down to Apple and get them to swap a battery.

It’ll cost you a fee, yes, but it’s going to be way less than you’d pay for a brand new model.

This has two big advantages – beyond saving the hundreds you would’ve spent on a posh new mobile.

The first is that your battery life situation will be restored to a like-new situation.

So you’ll have the absolute best charge you’ve had, equivalent to a box-fresh iPhone.

And it also fixes the performance woes that come with a severely degraded battery too.

So even though the exterior of your iPhone may be weathered by time, its innards will be box-fresh.

HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST ME?

There is a fee attached with getting a battery swap – sometimes.

Apple
Your local Apple Store will be able to do a battery replacement for you[/caption]

There are two ways to dodge paying, however.

First, if you’ve got a defective battery and you’re still within the one-year warranty then it’ll be covered.

And secondly, AppleCare+ will get you a free battery swap if it’s less than 80% of its original capacity.

As I mentioned earlier, just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health to check.

If neither of the above situations apply to you, you’ll need to pay.

But it’s far less costly than buying a new model.

a cell phone displays an important battery message
Apple
If your iPhone battery is particularly degraded then you may see a warning message in settings[/caption]

For instance, an old iPhone SE will have a fee of £69 in the UK and $69 in the US.

And an iPhone 11 battery replacement comes in at £85 in the UK and $89 in the US.

Newer and pricier models command a higher fee: the iPhone 15 Pro has a £95 / $99 charge associated with it.

But it’s unlikely that you’d need to swap your battery already on an iPhone 15 Pro, given it’s only a year old.

‘He won’t want me to end the gravy train’ says former world champion as he calls out Jake Paul ahead of Mike Tyson fight

A FORMER Brit world champion has sensationally claimed Jake Paul doesn’t want him to end his lucrative “gravy train”.

The YouTuber has ruffled plenty of feathers in the boxing world since turning pro back in January 2020, drawing criticism from many of the sport’s purists.

But the 47-year-old reckons The YouTuber is too scared to fight him[/caption]

And he’s received absolute pelters following the March announcement of his controversial clash with 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

Former Disney star Paul hasn’t been short of fight offers from retired world champions in recent years, including one from Brit Carl Froch.

But the former WBC super-middleweight champion reckons the social media sensation will do everything in his power to avoid sharing the ring with him.

‘The Cobra’ told snooker legend Stephen Hendry: “He’s a commodity, Jake Paul.

“He knows how to make money. So you’ve got to give him respect for that. But he’s not a boxer, [he’s] useless.

“Which I keep reminding him about. And you never know.

“If I keep poking the bear enough me might just [fight me].

“I think he just knows he’ll get beat and he doesn’t want me to end the gravy train.

“He doesn’t want to get better, does he, by a guy that’s been retired ten years.”

Froch, 47, shared fight fans’ outrage when it was announced that Paul would throw down with former undisputed champ Tyson.

And ‘The Cobra’ can’t foresee any other outcome than a Paul pounding of the near-pensioner-aged great.

He said: “Mike Tyson is an old man, 58 years old by the time he gets into the ring.

“You can’t beat the clock. In a game like this, you can play. But physically, – he’s 26 years old. He’ll have a round in him.

“If he caught Jake Paul with a big shot, he’d probably iron him out. But is he going to catch him? No.

“He’s there to make the numbers up, Tyson.”

Tyson hasn’t set foot in the ring since his Covid clash with fellow icon Roy Jones Jr in November 2020, in which he looked every bit his then 54 years.

Kevin Pietersen fails in £92k bid for membership of secretive golf club as England cricket icon, 44, gets ‘veto threat’

KEVIN Pietersen has been denied membership at a prestigious £92,000-a-year golf club.

The former England cricket star was reportedly “blackballed” after attempting to join Sunningdale Golf Club in Berkshire.

Pietersen lives close to the exclusive course, which has previously hosted the British Masters and the Women’s Open.

According to The Telegraph, four existing Sunningdale members said they would reject Pietersen’s application.

Friends had proposed his membership, but Pietersen never reached the formal process.

A source told the publication: “All it takes is one difficult member to stop the process, so before a vote new members are verbally discussed by existing members.

“The formal process wasn’t even started because it was made clear there would be objections.”

Pietersen is a talented golfer, playing off a handicap of 2.

The source continued: “Kevin was effectively blackballed – I’ve no idea why.

“He’s a good golfer and wouldn’t have caused any problems.

“I think he’s a member of Wentworth, so he will have to make do with playing there for now.”

Pietersen is playing at Wentworth this week in the BMW PGA Championship pro-am.

Sunningdale’s elite membership list is kept as a closely guarded secret.

Singer Harry Styles, England legend Gary Lineker and actor Sean Connery are all rumoured to be members.

According to the Daily Mail, Sir Andrew Strauss, Pietersen’s former England captain, is also on the books.

Strauss and Pietersen were embroiled in a text message row in 2012.

KP allegedly sent text messages about Strauss to South African players during a 2012 Test series between the two sides.

Pietersen, 44, was dropped following Textgate but reintegrated into the side under Alistair Cook’s captaincy.

He retired from cricket in 2014 and has since carved out a career in broadcasting for Sky Sports.

What is Kindle Unlimited?

How much is Amazon Kindle Unlimited?

The subscription service normally costs £9.49 a month.

However, new members can try Kindle Unlimited for 30 days at no charge, and signing up is straightforward – simply click the button below to take advantage of the offer.

You’ll need to add some card details but Amazon will only charge the £9.49 monthly amount after the promotional period ends.

Does Amazon Prime include Kindle Unlimited?

Unfortunately, Kindle Unlimited is not included with a Prime Membership as it runs as a separate subscription, such as Amazon Music or Audible.

Those who have signed up for a Prime membership can instead benefit from Prime Reading – a service that gives members access to a digital library.

Prime Reading is a sub-set of Kindle Unlimited and offers a smaller collection of titles that is regularly updated.

Kindle Unlimited provides users with access to over a million titles, while Prime Reading only gives you access to around one thousand.

While Prime Reading features several recent fiction and nonfiction titles, those seeking the latest popular releases may find a Kindle Unlimited subscription more suitable.

How to cancel Amazon Kindle Unlimited?

If you’ve found that you’re not using Kindle Unlimited as much as you originally thought you would, you can go ahead and cancel your subscription.

Clicking here will take you to a help page which explains all.

You simply go to your membership and subscription page in your Amazon account, click through to Cancel Kindle Unlimited Membership, and select the option to cancel.

It’s as simple as that.

It’s also worth noting that users can choose to pause their monthly subscription for a month instead of canceling.

If you’ve paused your subscription, you can resume it at any time via Kindle Unlimited Central.

However, pausing your subscription is not available if you are on a free trial or promotion.
