Yesterday Vanessa appeared The Jeremy Vine Show and opened up about her ill health.

She said: “I was felled by a kidney stone.

“Who knew? One thing, I was absolutely fine making lunch for the grandbabies, having a laugh, hungry, normal, everything.

“And the next minute, the pain was absolutely extraordinary.

“I’ve had natural childbirth twice, I’ve got some idea of pain, but this was remarkable. Actually remarkable. Anyway, in the end, I had to be nuked with a laser.”

Host Jeremy, 59, questioned why doctors didn’t allow the kidney stone to pass naturally.

Vanessa replied: “It was too big, it turned out. They scanned it, it was five millimetres, just a bit more than that.

“When they said, ‘If it’s over five millimetres, we’ll have to operate,’ I was praying, please let it be over five millimetres. Please let them operate because I couldn’t bear the thought of suffering through it any longer. I’m delighted to be here, I can’t tell you.”

Kidney stones are masses made of salt and minerals, and can be anywhere between a grain of salt and a golf ball in size.

There are several different types – calcium stones, struvite stones, uric acid stones and cystine stones.

The stones have potential to cause severe pain, and while most pass on their own through the ureter – the tube between the kidney and the bladder – some need to be surgically removed.

It’s been a dramatic few days for Vanessa.

Last week she was sitting in for Storm Huntley on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show when a fire alarm caused the entire building to be evacuated.

The former Celebrity Big Brother star took to her social media as a pre-recorded programme was put on the airwaves in its place.

“Oh for goodness sake a fire alarm!” she exclaimed on her Instagram story.

“Nobody knows if it’s real or pretend, but we think it’s real because there’s an actual fire engine and the building has been evacuated.”

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are a common and usually very painful condition.

They usually affect people between the ages of 30 to 60, the NHS says.

It adds: “They can be extremely painful, and can lead to kidney infections or the kidney not working properly if left untreated.”

How can you tell if you have a kidney stone?

  • You have a pain in the side of the tummy
  • You have severe pain that comes and goes
  • You feel sick or are vomiting

Call NHS 111 or a GP if you have severe pain, a high temperature, an episode of shivering or shaking or blood in the urine.

Kidney stones form from chemicals in the urine.

Some are as small as a grain of sand and are passed in the urine without you noticing. Others can be as large as a pebble.

Causes of kidney stones are:

  • Drinking too little water
  • Too much or too little exercise
  • Obesity
  • Weight loss surgery
  • Eating food with too much salt or sugar

Many kidney stones can be treated at home by drinking lots of water, using pain relief and waiting for the stones to pass.

Large kidney stones need to be removed by surgery, in which various methods are used to break the kidney stone into smaller pieces so that they can pass in the urine.

Some surgeries are done under anaesthetic while others are not

EastEnders fans left convinced another huge character will return this week as Bobby Beale’s exit looms

EASTENDERS fans are certain an iconic character will return amid Bobby Beale’s impending exit.

Viewers already know actor Clay Milner Russell is departing the BBC soap after five years playing Bobby.

Jane previously made a shock return earlier this year[/caption]

Ahead of the character’s exit, however, fans are convinced show bosses will bring back his adoptive mum Jane Beale (Laurie Metcalfe).

Their suspicions come after Bobby referenced Jane in last night’s episode.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one person wrote: “I could stay with my mum” please say Jane returning again and Bobby goes to live with her IS his exit. It would be the perfect ending.”

Another penned: “I hope Jane comes back tomorrow for Bobby’s exit. Otherwise the forgiving scenes they shared would be pointless.”

They later added: “JANE MENTION! SHE HAS TO COME BACK TOMORROW FOR BOBBY’S EXIT!!!!!”.

While another viewer remarked: “Jane mention! BRING HER BACK I BEG #EastEnders.”

Jane previously made a surprise return earlier in the year, which saw her reunite with Bobby, ex-husband Ian (Adam Woodyatt) and former stepson Peter (Thomas Law)

She also met Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) and George Knight (Colin Salmon) for the first time.

The soap meanwhile hinted Jane had reunited with ex-partner Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) off-screen.

As for Bobby, he’s currently going through a tough time in Walford, after finding his best mate Freddie (Bobby Brazier) and girlfriend Anna (Molly Rainford) kissing.

With the pair having slept together previously, Bobby was enraged after assuming they’d gone behind his back again.

To make matters worse, he had also deduced Anna’s pregnancy – which she’d been keeping a secret – leaving Bobby questioning if Freddie was the father.

Fans have not held back in their opinions of the love triangle storyline, as one wrote: “Can’t take much more of this Freddie/Anna/Bobby love triangle.”

Another fumed:  “Ruining the show! Abysmal abysmal abysmal!

Best soap affair love triangles

LOVE triangles are a fundamental part of soap-land, but which ones have become the most iconic?

EASTENDERS

Bradley/Stacey/Max: Stacey Slater began an affair with boyfriend Bradley Branning’s dad Max in 2007.

Despite their romps, Stacey still married Bradley, but their deceit came out in an iconic Christmas Day episode that year.

Grant/Sharon/Phil: Heading even further back in Walford history, EastEnders fans were gripped in the 90s as Sharon Watts had a one-night stand with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell.

Sharon confided in best friend Michelle Fowler – not realising it was caught on tape – and her husband Grant eventually found out and played it in front of everyone at the Queen Vic.

Syed/Amira/Christian: Syed Masood was engaged to Amira before realising he had feelings for another man, Christian, which he confessed to him on his wedding day.

A devout Muslim, Syed refused to admit his true sexuality and went ahead and married Amira anyway, but when they returned, the two men started an affair before being caught in the act by Amira.

CORONATION STREET

Shelley/Peter/Lucy: Peter Barlow took the concept of a love triangle and ran with it in Coronation Street – extending it to bigamy.

He was in a relationship with Shelley Unwin but started dating Lucy Richards, and quickly married her after she fell pregnant with his son, Simon.

But it didn’t stop him also marrying Shelley, but he was eventually caught when Lucy turned up in Weatherfield and the two women confronted him.

Ken/Deidre/Mike: Back in 1982, Deirdre Barlow started sleeping with her husband’s nemesis Mike Baldwin in secret, before confessing all a year later.

When Mike turned up at the marital home, Deirdre was being throttled by her husband who then kicked her out, but years later they reconciled.

Maria/Aidan/Eva: In 2017, Aidan Connor started sleeping with girlfriend Eva Price’s best friend, Maria Connor.

Eva eventually found out and she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy, spending his money and planned to confront him on their wedding day.

But she had a change of heart when a remorseful Aidan confessed, and decided to marry him anyway, only for Maria to arrive and expose her fake pregnancy.

EMMERDALE

Ross/Debbie/Pete: Debbie Dingle found herself torn between two brothers, Ross and Pete Barton in 2015 in Emmerdale.

She eventually decided to marry Pete but yet again, a soap wedding day was ruined when the groom learned of his bride’s betrayal via a recording played at the wedding.

Chrissie/Robert/Aaron: Robert Sugden was married to Chrissie White and all seemed well – until he began a steamy affair with Aaron Dingle.

Robert’s ex Katie Sugden almost exposed the affair – but fell to her death before she had the chance.

However, a guilty Aaron eventually cracked and told Chrissie about the affair – after which she announced it to the whole pub.

“Blend these two together and Hollyoaks actors are still superior- it hurts my heart to exclaim such words about the mighty Eastenders! Viva la axe.”

A third penned: “I don’t believe anyone is remotely interested in this Anna, Freddie and Bobby nonsense.”

Will Bobby’s storyline have a happy ending, or end in heartbreak?

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on iPlayer.

Portugal wildfires 2024: is it safe to travel or should I cancel my holiday?

SEVEN people have lost their lives in the devastating Portugal wildfires.

Hundreds have been forced to leave their homes which will leave you wondering which areas have been impacted by the blazes.

a map showing which areas are impacted by portugal wildfires
Several areas have been affected in the Portugal wildfires

You will need to get in touch with your travel advisor to see if they will find alternative accommodation if you were due to visit the country.

It’s also vital to make sure your travel insurance is valid.

Where are the Portugal wildfires?

Several areas across Portugal have been impacted by the wildfires.

There are more than 100 active wildfires around the country which have been burning for days.

It has been reported by Portuguese authorities that there is a high risk of the fires breaking out over the central and northern regions.

70 residents were forced to leave the area between Porto and Aveiro in the north.

Land and homes have been ravaged by the fires in Braga and motorways have been closed between the Lisbon and Porto.

Is it safe to travel to Portugal or should I cancel my holiday?

Temperatures have exceeded 30C in Portugal and seven people have died from the fires so far.

The Foreign Office is not advising against travel to Portugal as some areas such as the Algarve and Madeira have not been impacted.

However, you should check if the specific area you were due to travel to has been affected by the fires.

You need to speak to your travel operator as the place you were meant to go to may not be accessible anymore.

However, if you choose to cancel your trip, you may not be eligible for a refund.

This is because the UK Foreign Office does not tend to advise against travel due to fire risk, so operators are unlikely to cancel holidays unless the place you’re staying is directly affected.

You need to make sure your travel insurance policy covers you if the place you were travelling to is affected by wildfires.

Some policies may have cover for natural disasters which include hurricanes, floods, wildfires and earthquakes.

If you booked your trip as a package holiday, the provider will most likely offer you an alternative accommodation.

You may also be able to move your travel dates but if you booked everything separately yourself, the airline may still expect you to travel.

However, you still may be able to postpone your accommodation or travel and find somewhere alternative to stay in a safe area.
