‘Oldest board game in the WORLD’ dubbed ‘Hounds & Jackals’ is found… and it’s eerily similar to popular modern favourite

AN ANCIENT board game believed to be the oldest in the world has striking similarities to a popular modern favourite.

Dubbed Hounds & Jackals, this millennia-old pastime has long been believed to have originated in Egypt.

About 60 examples of the game have been discovered in Egypt, Mesopotamia, Israel, Syria, Iran, and Azerbaijan, and it has been known to modern academics since 1890.

Hounds & Jackals shares several core similarities to the modern Indian game 58 Holes, as both are part of the broader family of race games.

In both games, the primary objective is to move a set number of pieces (pegs) from a starting point to the goal by following a path of holes.

The first player to successfully move all of their pieces to the finish wins, making both games focused on a race to the end.

The number of holes and the movement of pieces in both games are also very similar.

Hounds & Jackals typically has 29 holes per player, amounting to 58 holes in total, which mirrors the explicit number of holes in the modern 58 Holes game.

Players in both games navigate their pieces through these spaces, advancing toward the goal as they move along the board.

In Hounds & Jackals, players use dice, knucklebones, or another randomizing tool to determine how far they move their pieces.

Meanwhile in 58 Holes, players also roll cowrie shells or dice to decide how many spaces their piece advances.

The board is supported by animal-shaped legs, probably those of a bull[/caption]

The games combine luck with strategy, as players must adapt their movements based on the random outcomes.

Both games feature special spaces that affect gameplay.

In Hounds & Jackals, certain holes on the board are marked as special, offering bonuses or protection from capture.

Likewise, in 58 Holes, there are safe zones where pieces cannot be captured by the opponent, adding a strategic layer to each move.

Both also allow for the possibility of capturing an opponent’s piece.

It comes as a version of Hounds & Jackals discovered in present-day Azerbaijan could indicate that the game originated in Asia instead of ancient Egypt.

The earliest version of the game ever found dates to the period between 2064 and 19552 BCE, during the reign of Mentuhotep II.

But archaeologist Walter Crist found a gaming board near Gobustan, Azerbaijan, in 2018, that could date back to even earlier.

He studied numerous rock shelters, the best of which was at the Çapmalı rock shelter at the Western shore of the Caspian Sea, engraved with dot patterns that closely mirrored game boards found in southwestern Asia and Egypt.

Crist and Rahman Abdullayev, his co-author, came to the conclusion that the carving was connected to the Middle Age Bronze layer present at the location.

This suggests that the game was played long before it was discovered in Egypt, the pair wrote in their study published by Cambridge University Press.

Sites in Ağdaşdüzü, Yeni Türkan, and Dübęndi have yielded six more discoveries of Hounds and Jackals game boards.

The game appears to have been a frequent diversion for shepherds who took refuge in the area during the winter, based on pottery shards found at the sites.

The authors said that it can be challenging to determine accurate dates during this time.

They wrote:  “Clearly, further early evidence for the game from precisely dated contexts is required to credit a specific culture for inventing the game.”

Crist and Abdullayev went on to say that regardless of where the game originated, “it was quickly adopted by a wide variety of people….

“The fast spread of this game attests to the ability of games to act as social lubricants, facilitating interactions across social boundaries.”

What are the rules of Hounds & Jackals?

HOUNDS & Jackals is an ancient board game believed to have originated in Egypt.

It is a race game where two players compete to move their pieces (pegs) from a starting point to a goal.

Historians and archaeologists have reconstructed possible basic rules based on similar ancient games and the design of the board.

The goal of Hounds & Jackals is for each player to move their five pegs from the start to the finish (marked by holes) on their side of the board, avoiding obstacles and using strategy to outmanoeuvre the opponent.

Believed to be a two-player game, each has five pieces (pegs), which are often shaped like hounds (dogs) and jackals (foxes).

The players each control a set of pieces of one shape (e.g., one player controls all hounds, the other all jackals).

Players take turns rolling dice, sticks, or another ancient form of random number generation (like throwing knucklebones).

Each turn, a player moves one of their pieces forward along the track by the number indicated by the roll.

Certain holes on the board may be marked with symbols (such as palm trees or circles) that act as safe zones, giving the player a bonus, or causing some kind of setback, like forcing the piece back or skipping a turn.

A player’s piece landing in a special hole might also allow another bonus move or protection from being captured.

The first player to get all their pieces from the starting hole to the goal wins the game.

Anthony Joshua’s ex-training partner claims he got dropped sparring 6ft 9in giant years before Daniel Dubois hurt him

ANTHONY JOSHUA was once floored in sparring by a 6ft 9in giant in sparring, his former training partner claimed.

AJ returns on Saturday in what is expected to be a British-record 96,000 sellout at Wembley Stadium.

a man wearing boxing gloves and a headgear that says reyes

He challenges for sparring partner Daniel Dubois for the IBF heavyweight world champion.

It comes years after Dubois was rumoured to have flatten AJ in a now-infamous spar at Team GB’s Sheffield HQ.

Joshua has been forced to deny being dropped but conceded he was at least stunned by a left hook.

Anthony Fowler – a 2016 Olympian who trained alongside the both – spoke out to say he was there and saw AJ’s legs turn to jelly.

Fowler – who has since retired – further claimed that Kazakh Ivan Dychko also had Joshua in a world of trouble in sparring.

He told talkSPORT: “I remember Ivan Dychko dropped Joshua. And David Price knocked Joshua down really heavily, he really hurt Joshua.

“That Kazakh lad dropped him once, but it was more of a flash knockdown. And Dubois hurt him as well.

“So I’ve seen him hurt three times but it is heavyweight boxing so it doesn’t matter who you are, if you get hit flush on the chin you could go over.”

Joshua vs Dubois fight predictions

THIS weekend Wembley will witness one of the biggest all-British fights of all-time.

But who will emerge victorious under the famous arch? Some of the biggest names in boxing have been having their say…

Oleksandr Usyk: “My favourite is Anthony Joshua but I am very bad at predictions. But I will predict Anthony Joshua.”

Dillian Whyte: “I just think that it’s one of those fights where it is a genuine 50/50 fight in my opinion.”

Joe Joyce: “I was initially edging with Joshua but I don’t know, Dubois is coming on.”

Frazer Clarke: “As heavy-handed as Dubois is and as good a fighter as he’s becoming, I still have to go for Joshua.”

Francis Ngannou: “Even though Joshua lost against Usyk twice and Dubois fought Usyk and almost knocked him down and almost won, I would still give this to Joshua.”

Joshua admitted to being decked by 6ft 8in Price, 41, but denied ever hitting the canvas with Dubois.

Interestingly, AJ beat Dychko in the semi-finals of the 2012 Olympics on his route to winning a heroic gold in the capital.

Meaning he was supposedly floored by the European just before beating him in the Games.

Fowler, 33, said: “That was in the amateurs, we were all sparring with the Kazakhstanis, and they were all wearing smaller gloves.

“They were all wearing competition gloves, and we were all wearing big gloves.

“I sparred that Serik Sapiyev, and he done me in mate. He had a pair of 10oz gloves on and I had pillows on my hands.

“It was sparring before the Olympics. Joshua was loading up and I think he got caught with a one-two and it was a flash knockdown.

“Not many people were there, it was just a spar but I remember it.”

Joshua, 34, awkwardly brought up the sparring session with Dubois, 27, at the press conference.

The show has aired for five seasons to date – with previous participants including Rhod Gilbert and Angela Barnes[/caption]

Its format sees two celebrities filmed as they tackle journeys down roads considered notably hazardous.

In the new episodes, one pairing will be comedians and friends, Johnny Vegas and Lucy Beaumont.

The journey taken by the Taskmaster alums sees them driving through Montenegro.

Johnny shared: “I can’t believe I’ve such fond memories of being so b****y terrified at times.

“I can only put it down to Lucy Beaumont‘s inexhaustible quirky humour under pressure and Montenegro’s stunning variation of landscapes.

“Both tears of fear and laughter made it an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime.”

Meanwhile, Lucy added: “I still can’t believe I made in one piece; I must admit I didn’t want to be on a dangerous road with Johnny driving, but I didn’t want to leave either.

“What started out as a white-knuckle ride turned out to be a spiritual experience which cemented that me and Johnny will be lifelong friends.”

Another confirmed duo is I’m a Celeb alum Babatunde Aléshé and fellow comedian Kae Kurd – who travelled to Zambia.

Reflecting on his experience, Babatunde shared: “I absolutely loved taking part in World’s Most Dangerous Roads.

“As someone of African heritage, this journey meant so much to me, especially to experience it with my good friend Kae.”

As Kae remarked: “One of the best experiences of my life. Challenging, fun and eye opening, and with a great companion too.”

In addition, Rhod Gilbert – who has appeared in previous episodes – will be narrating a compilation of memorable show moments so far.

This is titled World’s Most Dangerous Roads: Rhod Gilbert’s Extra Mile.

Initially beginning in 2011, World’s Most Dangerous Roads aired for three series on BBC Two, up to 2013.

Comedians including Hugh Dennis, Sue Perkins, Ed Byrne and David Baddiel all took on dangerous journeys in the original run.

Dave later revived the format and aired the show from series four onwards.

World’s Most Dangerous Roads returns to U&Dave in November.

I’m 40 but look even better than I did in my 20s – it’s all thanks to a trick that’s not even found in the beauty aisle

A MUM-of-one has showcased how she looks better aged 40 than she did in her Twenties.

Adriana Krzesniak is a lifestyle content creator who strongly believes that skincare starts on the inside.

She believes maintaining a youthful glow is all about lifestyle[/caption]

Rather than promoting various lotions and potions, she instead shares diet and lifestyle tricks that can improve skin from the inside-out.

And there’s two foods she swears by to stop ageing in its tracks.

In a recent TikTok post, Adriana shared how her life “really started after 40”.

She even said that she believes she looks better now than she did aged 20, thanks to her improved lifestyle.

“Better make-up, better clothes, better money, more confidence, calmer lifestyle,” she wrote.

Adriana is also a big consumer of wild-caught salmon and turmeric – and says these are her key anti-ageing foods.

Neuroscientist Robert Love, who specialises in helping people fight Alzheimer’s disease, recently claimed that both salmon and turmeric are the ultimate anti-ageing foods for your skin AND brain.

Taking to TikTok in March this year, Adriana revealed that she strongly agrees.

As a regular consumer of both, she believes they are the secret to her youthful glow.

Wild-caught salmon is beneficial for both skin and brain health as it is rich in nutrients, especially omega-3 fatty acids.

The fatty acids present in salmon help maintain the skin’s moisture barrier, as well as reduce dryness and inflammation.

Furthermore, the omega-3s and proteins in salmon are believed to promote collagen production, which is essential for maintaining firm and youthful skin.

It’s also a good source of vitamin D, which supports skin cell growth and repair.

On the other hand, turmeric is beneficial for skin health thanks to its active compound curcumin.

Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial and wound-healing properties.

And as it’s a strong antioxidant, it neutralises any external nasties that manage to seep into your skin and damage it, such as pollution.

These antioxidant properties can also slow down the ageing process by protecting skin cells from damage that leads to wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.

What is Collagen?

  • Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and provides strength and structure to the skin and muscles
  • It plays a significant role in maintaining skin elasticity and hydration
  • As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles, sagging skin and decreased skin firmness
  • Collagen production starts to dwindle in our mid-to-late 20s and early 30s. By 40, it has dropped dramatically

It’s important to note that while collagen-based skincare products may offer benefits, their effectiveness can hugely vary.

Some experts suggest that topical application of collagen may have limited effectiveness compared to other skincare ingredients that stimulate collagen production within the skin.

Watch bloodcurdling moment teen ‘murderer’ Carly Gregg, 14, GIGGLES in court after ‘fatally shooting mom in the face’

THIS is the bloodcurdling moment teen “murderer” Carly Gregg, 14, giggles in court after allegedly shooting her own mom in the face.

Gregg, now 15, allegedly killed 40-year-old math teacher Ashley Smylie, in their home in Mississippi in March.

Gregg’s mother, Ashley Smylie, was fatally shot in the face[/caption]

At the start of proceedings on Thursday, Gregg was caught on Court TV footage trying to sickeningly stifle a laugh.

Footage shows the 15-year-old break a smile before quickly covering her mouth with her hand.

She then proceeds to pretend like she is leaning on her hand to continue covering her mouth.

Gregg still has a slight smile as the clip continues to play – despite being accused of murdering her own mother.

Gregg was 14 years old when she murdered her mom inside their home in Brandon, Mississippi, outside Jackson, after the two argued over her marijuana usage, prosecutors allege.

Horrifying surveillance footage in the house showed Gregg wearing a Nirvana tee and dark pants, walking from the kitchen to another room that morning before gunshots and screams rang out.

Gregg shot her mom in the neck, stole her phone, and went back to the kitchen to text her stepdad while playing with their two dogs, prosecutors allege.

The eerie video showed a stone-faced Gregg staring at her mom’s phone while she texted her stepdad, Heath, “When will you be home, honey?”

Gregg also texted a friend, referred to only as BC in court, and asked them to come over, prosecutors claim.

When BC came to the house, Gregg asked them, “Have you ever seen a dead body?” before leading the friend inside.

By the time Heath came home, BC was standing outside, where they heard gunfire.

Heath managed to wrestle the gun out of Gregg’s hand and then called police, prosecutors allege.

His shoulder was grazed by a bullet, but he otherwise came out unscathed.

Gregg, now 15, has pleaded not guilty by way of insanity, and her lawyers are claiming she blacked out during the shootings.

At the time of the killing, Gregg had been smoking marijuana for about six weeks and was on the anxiety and depression drugs Lexapro and Zoloft.

One psychiatrist testified that she was experiencing hallucinations around that time.

Gregg’s lawyers told the court that she has no memory of her mother’s murder.

DISTURBING BEHAVIORS

On Thursday, Gregg started her fourth day of trial with disturbing courtroom behavior by being caught laughing.

A raft of mental health professionals testified for Gregg’s case and debated the severity of her mental health struggles.

The teen girl is now pursuing an insanity defence after turning down a plea deal[/caption]

The teen had a troubled relationship with her mother but was described as a gifted child who excelled in school, Gregg’s former counselor Rebecca Kirk testified in court.

Gregg skipped the fourth grade and had no history of violence.

Her biological father was allegedly abusive toward her and had been diagnosed as bipolar.

Kirk saw Gregg for nine weeks at the beginning of 2024 for counseling and said the teen described some mental health struggles but seemed relatively normal.

The pair spent most of their time talking about school, and Gregg excitedly told Kirk she was reading Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky.

The book follows the main character’s conflicted feelings of guilt after he murders his neighbor.

Another professional, Dr. Jason Pickett, interviewed Gregg after her mother’s death and said, in his opinion, the teen does not meet the insanity requirements.

He doubted the teen had bipolar and questioned whether her father suffered from the mental disorder either.

Meanwhile, Dr. Andrew Clark, a medical psychiatrist, argued on Wednesday that Gregg had “blacked out” the day of the killing.

However, he suggested that Gregg could be capable of faking a mental health condition.

Gregg was offered a plea deal to serve 40 years in prison, but she dismissed it.

She faced a potential sentence of life in prison.

I make six figures doing a job most people think is minimum wage – I go on 6 holidays a year & have 6 money-making rules

A BEAUTICIAN has revealed how she makes six figures doing a job that many people think is minimum wage.

Alysha Hicklinm, who is now a beauty business coach, has managed to form an empire that completely runs without her.

It is managing to run so well that she completely retired from doing treatments at her beauty business in 2020.

Talking on her podcast called the Beauty Growth Academy, the entrepreneur says: “My beauty and aesthetic salon makes six figures a year and it completely runs without me.

“I retired from doing treatments in my beauty business in 2020, and I still make six figures a year.

“I don’t need to go into the salon if I don’t want to, and I’m on holiday every other month.”

The reason Alysha is able to do this is because she followed six rules and has then set them in place in her business.

First off, she praised her team for being so “great” and 95 per cent of her team who are with her now, have been with her for over five years.

She says: “I’ve got a really good relationship with every single one of them.”

Her second point was to ensure that there were policies and rules in place for clients and staff to make sure there are “no grey areas.”

She says: “They’re black and white. There are policies for clients and there are rules for staff.”

Alysha always has systems which help when it comes to running her business smoothly.

She says: “So, booking systems, cleaning schedules – all these things are in place and they work effectively.

“They don’t need me.”

Communication

Alysha believes it is important to always have a line of communication.

She says: “There’s always a line of communication available to me and there’s a chat with all the team in it.

Love all these things you have mentioned. Very valuable and transferable.

TikTok comment

“We’re all kept in the loop.”

Her fifth point is ensuring standards are kept high and that there are no “grey areas.”

High standards

She says: “The team knows exactly what the standards are for the salon.

“We know what is allowed and what is not allowed.”

Her final point that she believes helps make a business turnover six figures a year is having trust.

It takes hard work. It takes consistency.

Alysha Hicklinm

She says: “This was always my biggest problem because I was a control freak.

“But once I learned how to trust and let go, I just had so much more freedom, not just in business, but in life as well.

Trust

“People out there making six figures a year make it look so simple and easy. It’s not f****** easy. There’s no shortcut.

“There’s no overnight success secret. It takes time.

“It takes hard work. It takes consistency.”

Many people rushed to the comments section after listening to the podcast to share their thoughts.

Tips on starting your own business

Getting Started

There are dozens of free resources for anyone who wants to start their own business.

You can find training and courses online from sites such as Meta Blueprint, which teaches you all about marketing through Facebook and Instagram for free.

Grow with Google has thousands of free training workshops, official certificates, and courses to help you learn all the skills you need to run a business.

Business networks such as Enterprise Nation, the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self Employed, and the Federation of Small Businesses are great places to find information and tips online.

And there are loads of free business mentoring schemes from company-funded programmes such as the NatWest Accelerator and Barclays Eagle Labs.

The British Library has a range of start-up advice and workshops, many of them free, including a two-day course for aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners called Kickstart Your Business.

You can attend for free at the British Library in London or at any Business and IP Centre. You can find your nearest by checking on the British Library website.

The service also lets anyone with a clear business idea set up one-to-ones with high-flying business experts who can offer you helpful pointers.

Writing a Business Plan

Everyone looking to start a business should write a business plan to help get their idea off the ground.

According to the British Library’s Business and IP Centre, it’s the vital component for any business.

“It provides potential lenders and investors with a roadmap of how your business will operate and how you will go about achieving your goals,” it states.

What Are You Selling and Who’s Your Customer?

This sounds obvious, but it’s easy to try to be all things to all people. That rarely works. Stick to one idea to start with.

Who it’s for is a really important thing to get clear in your mind. You need to know who wants to buy what you’re selling.

Someone prepared to spend £1,000 on a diamond necklace isn’t necessarily the right customer if you’re selling craft friendship bracelets.

If you want to build websites for other companies, what kind of clients could you do a good job for?

A global company isn’t likely to choose a small start-up but another business just starting out might.

Once you know who your customer is, you can develop a clear plan for the best way to get your business, products, or services in front of them.
