CORRIE fans have been left fuming over an ‘out of the blue’ storyline they insist the show’s writers only created to confuse viewers.

A new character has recently been introduced to Weatherfield during Lauren Bolton’s reappearance – but fans think her involvement in the show makes no sense.

Betsy Swain appeared in the borough earlier this year when Carla offered her work experience at Underworld.

She was one of the first people to notice that twisted lawyer Joel Deering has a dark side.

After catching him flirting with her underage friend Sabrina, she started blackmailing him for money.

However, it wasn’t long before Betsy got swept up into something more sinister.

Joel was revealed as the father of Lauren’s baby and the reason why she went missing, as he attempted to keep her pregnancy hush-hush.

He even went as far as drugging the young girl with abortion pills in an attempt to make her miscarry.

She ended up giving birth to her baby boy prematurely, and Frankie has been battling with his health in the NICU ever since.

A terrified Betsy recently confessed to Sabrina that it was her who actually provided Joel with the pills, so she is indirectly responsible for Lauren going into labour too early.

But viewers don’t understand how she could have anything to do with it.

Taking to an online forum, one Coronation Street fan complained: “Call me a cynic. But I think the producers are making up this storyline as they go along.

“We are now expect to believe that Betty supplied the drugs and that Joel did not order them.

“And where would she have got the drugs from in the first place? Does Betty know any drug dealers?

“I have not seen Betty talk to anyone suspicious.”

Another person added: “They’re really dragging out this storyline aren’t they?

“Like you I thought I’d missed something but it seems we haven’t missed anything on screen and they’ve just decided to add another element to it out of the blue for no reason other than to confuse the viewers by the looks of it.”

A third questioned: “How did Joel make her buy the drugs? Has he got something on her that she doesn’t want anyone to know?

“And why did she think she could blackmail him for money when she first appeared in the show?”

Hugo Vickers warned the Sussexes that any public move they make to join in on the current, very heated, run-up to the US election is extremely dangerous for them.

The pair are still supposed to remain neutral when it comes to politics, despite quitting the Royal Family.

But on Tuesday, they got their Archewell team to send letters out to unregistered voters asking them to have their say when polls open in November.

Harry and Meghan know the “danger” of publicly speaking out – but “desperately staying relevant” is more important, says Hugo.

He told The Sun: “It’s a big danger issue for them.

“I think that everything they do is a desperate attempt to keep relevant and keep themselves in the news.

“You could say it’s very trivial to put out a notice saying: ‘Go out and vote,’ we know people should do that.

“It’s not really up to them to tell the American population how they should spend their time, or what they should do at all.

“But in that respect I do see them sort of once again, weighing in and seeking publicity, because that’s how they stay relevant.

“They’ve moved into this kind of celebrity status situation, whereby they must always be attracting news comments, otherwise they disappear.

“But they definitely should not be dabbling in any kind of politics, least of all American politics. They have really no right to do it.”

It comes after the Sussexes were already accused of “violating” the terms of their Megxit deal after pledging to “uphold the values of Her Majesty”.

Hugo added: “It was made quite clear when they left [the Royal Family] that they should not be dabbling in politics.

“I think they accepted that at the time, and whatever you say, even though they don’t endorse one particular candidate, they are now dabbling in politics.

“So it’s very serious. I think you’ll find they’ll probably jump in on any kind of relevant issue that they can get their hands on in order to keep themselves in the public eye.

“It won’t please the British Royal Family at all, who scrupulously keep out of politics.

“They’re in enough trouble as it is. It’s just not right what they’ve done. It’s just not right to do that. They shouldn’t do it.”

Harry and Meg’s Archewell foundation said on Tuesday: “Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities.

“At The Archewell Foundation, we recognise that civic engagement, no matter one’s political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world.

“By participating in initiatives like this, we aim to amplify the message that every voice matters.

“Together, let’s make sure every eligible voter is informed and empowered to participate in shaping America’s future.”

However, the statement stopped short of endorsing a candidate and the couple remain publicly neutral, reports the Telegraph.

The pair were recently accused of backing Joe Biden in the last US election.

In a video statement from the garden of their Montecito mansion, which they had only just moved into at the time, the duke and duchess called the presidential election “the most important of our life”.

Harry  also went on to urge voters to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity”.

It comes after Harry and Meg participated in years of spats with Donald Trump – spanning back to 2016.

During a late-night talk show appearance eight years ago, the former actress called Trump “misogynistic” and “divisive,” suggesting she might move to Canada if he won the presidency.

In response, Trump labelled her as “nasty” in a 2019 interview, and their exchanges continued to escalate over the years.

Harry then criticised Trump during a prank call in 2020, while the Republican threatened to deny the couple US security costs after they moved to Los Angeles.
