INEC distributes sensitive materials
The Edo State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has conducted prayer sessions to ensure a violence-free governorship election scheduled for 21 September.
The state chairman, Apostle Dr Irekpono Omoike, stated that the prayers were essential due to the numerous threats and tensions arising from the election campaigns.
He urged voters to go to their polling stations and choose their preferred candidates and parties.
“The prayer aims to elect a governor who upholds integrity, a hallmark of sustainable governance in the state from the Midwest and Bendel eras,” Omoike said.
He added that the prayers were also intended to promote peace and prevent violence, untimely deaths and other harmful actions.
“Edo is known for its peaceful nature. We pray for a candidate who fears God, loves the people, and respects traditional institutions,” he noted.
Omoike urged the voters to maintain peace before, during and after the election, stressing that elections should not be seen as a do-or-die affair.
Tensions have been high, with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing each other of inciting violence to gain electoral advantage. The PDP alleged that APC used security forces to intimidate its members; while the ruling party’s non-signing of a peace accord has raised concerns.
Governor Obaseki’s declaration of the election as “a do-or-die affair” has further heightened fears among voters.
Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed sensitive materials for Saturday’s election and announced the closure of campaign activities.
The distribution, which took place at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) premises on Ring Road, involved several commercial buses hired by INEC to transport the materials to the local governments. Party agents were present to monitor the process.
INEC confirmed that all materials required for the election arrived at Benin Airport the previous day and were being transported to ensure timely delivery to polling units.
According to INEC, political parties must cease all campaigns by midnight on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Sam Olumekun, reminded parties that any campaign activity beyond this deadline is illegal and subject to penalties under the Electoral Act 2022.
