One of England’s prettiest towns is home to country’s oldest pub – and a famous rock star

STOW-ON-THE-WOLD in the Cotswolds is often dubbed one of the prettiest towns in the country, thanks to its honey-coloured buildings and a door so charming it even inspired Tolkien.

The Cotswolds is packed with pretty towns and villages like Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Burford.

Stow-on-the-Wold is home to stone houses and independent shops decorated with flower boxes and vintage signs.

Considered to be one of the prettiest towns in the country by travel experts SnapTrip, Stow-on-the-Wold is home to plenty of picture-perfect spots.

One of those is the Market Square, lined with independent shops like the Cotswolds Sweet Company, a homeware shop called Scotts of Stow and clothes boutique, Sister Sister Collective.

Literary fans always make a pitstop at the nearby St Edward’s Church, just a two-minute walk from the square, as it’s rumoured that the doorway inspired Lord of The Rings author J.R.R Tolkien’s book Doors Of Durin.

The parish church is one of the 98 Grade I listed buildings in the Cotswolds, but there are plenty of more modern attractions, including the Fosse Gallery.

Established in 1980, the Fosse Gallery is thought to be one of the most important contemporary art galleries in the country.

The pretty Cotswold town also claims to be home to England‘s oldest inn, with its title being authenticated by the Guinness Book of Records.

Dating back to 947 AD, the Porch House is certainly one of the oldest pubs in the country.

Its 16th-century stone fireplace in the dining room is inscribed with symbols as “witch marks” that were used to protect the boozer against evil.

Today the pub is a five-star hotel but it maintains its ancient heritage with original feature fireplaces, windows and oak doors.

There are roughly nine pubs in the town, including other popular spots like The Bell Inn and The Kings Arms.

Caffeine lovers will want to head to Stow Town Coffee, an artisan micro-roastery that’s said to be one of the smallest commercial coffee roasteries in the UK.

Other spots to grab a bite to eat in the town include Cotswold Cheese Company and Lucy’s Tearoom.

The Cotswolds is a walker’s paradise and Stow-on-the-Wold is no exception, with several walking routes running out of the town.

One of those is the Heart of England Way Stow Circular, a 6km circular walking route that takes roughly 90 minutes from start to finish.

Other popular routes include the six-mile walk to Bourton-on-the-Water, which passes the nearby villages of Icomb and Wick Rissington.

Bigger walking challenges can be found on the Gloucestershire Way, North Cotswold Diamond Way and Macmillan Way

Other nearby attractions include Cotswold Farm Park, run by Countryfile‘s Adam Henson.

Set up by Adam’s father, the farm is home to over 50 rare breeds of farm animals.

Family members of all ages will be entertained with the farm demonstrations, feeding time, adventure playgrounds and walking trails.

Entry tickets to the farm cost £13.50 for a full-paying adult and £11.50 for kids.

Blur bassist Alex James also calls the area home, as he swapped the rock star lifestyle for Cotswold life many years ago.

He lives only a 10-minute drive away, on a farm in nearby Kingham village where he holds his annual Big Feastival festival.

In 2015, the Beckhams were set to buy in the area too, eyeing up the multi-million pound Abbotswood Estate on the outskirts of the town, but instead chose their now-home in Great Tew, which is a 20-minute drive away.

Stow-on-the-Wold is a 45-minute drive from Gloucester.

Earlier this month, we revealed our favourite towns and villages to visit across the UK.

Another tiny village in the UK has been compared to a retro 1940s film set.

Young Boys vs Aston Villa

Our Bet Builder selections: Aston Villa to win, both teams to score, Ollie Watkins to score and John McGinn to be carded.

Back our 10/1 Bet Builder

Here’s why we’ve made those selections:

  • Aston Villa to win: Odds-on at 4/6 with Betfred and if not overawed by the occasion, should have too much to offer against a Young Boys side who are bottom of Swiss Super League with no wins and only three draws to their name after six games.
  • Both teams to score: Despite that, they’ve been decent on the continent and secured their spot here with 4-2 aggregate win over Galatasaray in previous round. Villa not kept clean sheet in any of their four games this season.
  • Ollie Watkins to score: Slowish start to the season before bagging two in remarkable comeback win over Everton at weekend. Villa’s talisman can strike on big stage.
  • John McGinn to be carded: One booking to his name already this season and all-action midfielder will get well stuck in here. Just the four fouls in four league games but will be keen to stamp authority in this.

Long-awaited iOS 18 finally coming to millions of iPhones TODAY – with 5 new features including ‘biggest redesign ever’

APPLE is finally releasing its free iOS 18 upgrade to millions of iPhones today.

The mega update introduces a wave of new features, including the ability to customise your iPhone like never before, new apps – and a way to hide embarrassing apps you don’t want people to know about.

Apple says its made the ‘biggest redesign ever’ of the Photos app[/caption]

Apple has traditionally released new versions of iOS at 6pm BST / 10am PT / 1pm ET so fans have their calendars marked at these times.

Before you can install iOS 18, make sure your iPhone is ready by following our important tips here.

iOS 18 is one of the most radical overhauls Apple has made to the iPhone operating system.

The firm’s Apple Intelligence AI tools won’t quite be ready today but there will be plenty to sink your teeth into below before that.

Personalise your iPhone

Apple is giving users a lot more freedom to decide how their iPhone looks, in a similar way to Android.

You can finally place app icons anywhere, not just a row starting from the top or stuck to the usual rigid grid system.

And if you want a nice consistent theme, you can add colour hints for app icons and folders too.

Apple is making the Control Centre more customisable, with the ability to add groups and change how they look.

Users can add controls to their lock screen as well.

Revamped Photos app

The Photos app on your iPhone will look quite different once iOS 18 is installed, which Apple has called the “biggest redesign ever”.

Snaps will be organised better than before, with topics like Recent Days, Trips and People & Pets in the Collections section.

You can pin collections that are more important to you as well so you have faster access to them.

Messaging improvements

Apple has done some work on the messaging app.

There are more reactions beyond the limited six that were available before.

You can also add animated effects to any letter, word, phrase or emoji in the Messages app.

Elsewhere, you can even schedule messages to be sent at a certain time of your choosing.

Apple has finally added support for RCS (Rich Communication Services) which means you can send or receive photos, videos and see read receipts from friends with an Android device.

Passwords app

Apple is releasing a brand new app for passwords on iPhone.

This will keep all your passwords securely in one place, as well as important security alerts.

Better still, the passwords app can be used across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, and Windows, so you can access them easily on plenty of devices.

Hide embarrassing apps

Don’t want people to see you’re using a dating app or got a niche interest you don’t want family to know about?

iOS 18 will finally allow users to hide apps in a private folder.

The only way to unlock this folder is using Face ID or a passcode.

Graziano Di Prima returns to Instagram for the first time since being axed with sweet video from Strictly fan

GRAZIANO Di Prima has returned to Instagram for the first time since being sacked from Strictly Come Dancing.

The Italian dancer shared a rare post – and showed his appreciation to a young Strictly fan as the show returned for its 20th series without him.

Graziano showed his appreciation to a young Strictly fan for their support over the weekend as he missed the return of the BBC show

Graziano was sacked earlier this year following allegations of physical and verbal behaviour.

He moved back to Italy from the UK and has stayed off social media.

However, last night he felt compelled to break his silence and shared a video from a young Strictly fan who has supported him since his early days on the show.

Katie, a little girl from Durham, had set up a fan account with her mum and she sent the dancer a message over the weekend.

Katie spoke in a video and wore an Italian football shirt.

She said: “Let’s face it, there’s only one shirt I’m going to wear today!”

She proudly turned around to reveal ‘Di Prima’ written on the back of it.

The mum tagged Graziano in the video and he reshared it on social media on Sunday morning.

The Sun revealed the Italian dancer, 30, had been hit with claims around his former dance partner Zara McDermott.

At the time Graz too spoke out saying he had “deep regrets”.

The dancer wrote: “I deeply regret the events that led to my departure from Strictly. My intense passion and determination to win might have affected my training regime.

“Respecting the BBC HR process, I understand it’s best for the show that I step away.”

He moved back to Italy with his wife Giada Lini and he was spotted picking fruit in his old job over the summer.

It is understood the BBC is close to sharing the results of its investigation into Giovanni Pernice, whose training methods with his celeb partners also sparked accusations of gross misconduct.

Issues around Strictly’s training first came to light when Amanda Abbington revealed her diagnosis of PTSD from working with Gio.

She demanded CCTV from rehearsals to prove that Giovanni’s training methods weren’t acceptable.

The BBC issued a statement defending its duty of care to contestants, insisting it takes any claims of wrongdoing very seriously.

But they later announced they were conducting a thorough investigation after three complainants instructed lawyers.

The row has threatened to overshadow the 20th anniversary series of the hit BBC1 dance competition, which returned on Saturday night.

Strictly's full scandal so far

Strictly Come Dancing's scandal has been growing over the past few months, with several major players speaking out about what went on. Here are the key moments of what's happened so far

16th May: Giovanni Pernice sensationally quits Strictly Come Dancing after nine years on the show.

17th May: Giovanni becomes the centre of an official investigation after three former partners – believed to be Amanda Abbington, Laura Whitmore and Ranvir Singh – make complaints to the BBC.

16th June: Giovanni releases an official statement vowing to clear his name and denies any wrongdoing.

8th July: Strictly confirms Aljaz Skorjanec will return to the series, replacing Giovanni, after initially quitting the show two years ago.

10th July: Amanda Abbington launches fresh legal proceedings to get the rehearsal footage from her time with Giovanni, after allegedly he refused to release the videos.

13th July: Graziano Di Prima is axed from Strictly for “gross misconduct” after footage of his treatment of Zara McDermott is brought to the attention of the BBC.

Graziano quickly broke his silence, apologising for his behaviour in a statement and saying he “deeply regrets it”, adding his “intense passion and determination to win might have affected his training regime.”

15th July: Strictly bosses implement new duty of care protocols, including having a chaperone present throughout all rehearsals.

16th July: Zara McDermott speaks out publicly for first time. She states while the production team were “amazing to work with”, she found the rehearsal room “completely different”, confirming there’s footage of “certain situations”.

19th July: Anton Du Beke is put under the spotlight for his “1970s attitude” and treatment of female celeb stars, particularly after allegedly referring to 2009 partner Laila Rouass as a “p***” after getting a spray tan.

21st July: Paralympian Will Bayley, who has limb condition arthrogryposis, revealed he was encouraged to leap from a table during a dance routine, despite fears. The stunt caused an injury that forced him to withdraw from the show.

22nd July: MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace admits he broke down in tears and got a nasty stress rash on his face during his time on Strictly in 2014.

22nd July: Despite ongoing issues, the Strictly professional cast begin rehearsals for this year’s series.

23rd July: Celebrity agent Melanie Blake claims she was sexually assaulted by an unnamed pro dancer while backstage on the show, and claims she witnessed ageism, rudeness and a rough treatment to the point of injury.

23rd July: Strictly is forced to beef up security after ‘an intruder scales the wall of the rehearsal studio’.

23rd July: BBC boss Tim Davie breaks his silence on the ongoing allegations against Strictly, saying he is ‘deeply sorry’, adding: “Hundreds of people, be they pros, contestants or crew have been part of it and had a brilliant experience.

“At the same time if someone thinks there was something wrong or they want to talk about their experience then of course we want them to raise that with us. Be in no doubt we will take it seriously, listen and deal with it as appropriate.”

24th July: Strictly 2023 star Krishnan Guru-Murthy holds a bombshell interview with Amanda Abbington on Channel 4 news, where she claims she was bullied, with some of the ‘humilation being of a sexual nature’.

27th July: Laura Whitmore releases a statement regarding her Strictly experience, saying “I thought my experience was specific to me but I’ve since learned I was wrong”.

She adds she is not part of the official complaint, but has come forward to support Amanda with the BBC, alongside others.

28th July: Laila Rouass speaks out against the accusations regarding Anton Du Beke, saying she “never felt pressured” by him and “personally insisted on six to seven hours training a day”.

10th August: Graziano breaks his silence on his Strictly axe, saying “these vile, false allegations have ruined my life.”

He also told of the “shocking” end to his friendship with Zara McDermott.

We also revealed that Amanda Abbington was also quizzed for a second time as Strictly execs recruited 15 new staff to monitor rehearsals.

11th August: Just as the investigation was expected to conclude, Amanda made a dramatic intervention. Giovanni was on the brink of being cleared until Amanda handed in more text messages.

24th August: Graziano Di Prima called in top lawyers to sue the BBC and to try to clear his name. He recruited big hitters Whitestone Chambers to fight his corner.

A source said: “They’ve also looked at his BBC contract and believe there are grounds to sue.”

Meanwhile, the BBC also delayed releasing the findings of the probe into Giovanni Pernice. The Sun revealed that the results of the three-month investigation were unlikely to be announced in August.

Nintendo Switch fans grab deeply discounted two-game collection with a 95-rated classic

THERE are always deals going on in gaming, but Nintendo Switch owners often see fewer discounts on games for the platform.

The hugely popular console doesn’t need deep price cuts to boost sales, which is why we always grab them when we can.

Portal 2 is one of the highest-rated games of all time[/caption]

However, there is a deal right now for one of the highest-rated games of all time that Switch players should pick up.

There’s not one but two 90+ rated games in the collection that you can grab for a fraction of the usual cost.

The Portal Companion Collection, is a collection made exclusively for Nintendo Switch players, and contains both games from the Portal series.

This includes the original Portal with a 90 rating on review aggregate site Metacritic, as well as the sequel Portal 2 with a huge rating of 95.

Games rarely achieve ratings over 90, so this is a particularly special deal to grab.

The Portal games are first-person shooters with a twist, as instead of firing bullets you fire portals.

These allow you to move throughout the levels in unexpected ways, as you use gravity and physics to fly across each room.

Both games consist of a series of rooms where you have to solve platforming puzzles to make your escape.

Portal 2 even has a co-op mode, so you can work together to figure out the puzzles ever faster with extra portal power.

However, if you want to use this mode, you’ll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription so that you can connect with others.

These games have been critically acclaimed since their releases, and not just because of their unique concepts and intriguing puzzle design.

Both games are well known for their quirky sense of humour, which has led people to consistently ask for more games in the series.

The Portal Collection is usually pretty cheap to purchase but it’s an even better deal during the current sale.

Usually priced at $19.99/£13.49, you can pick it up right now for $6.79/£4.58, saving 66% off the regular price.

The deal ends on Thursday, September 26, 2024, so players have over a week if they want to grab it.
