Ugarte started the Carabao Cup clash days after making his Red Devils bow from the bench against Southampton.

The 23-year-old showed off his combative side throughout a feisty first half at Old Trafford.

But the former PSG star came off second best in a tangle with the Tykes’ Luca Connell.

Some Utd fans claimed Connell “stamped” on the Uruguayan as he went in for a tackle, but he escaped without a booking.

Ugarte was left with blood streaming down his leg after being caught by Connell’s studs.

One fan raged on X: “Barnsley get a freekick for a stamp on Ugarte, you cannot make the bias against United up anymore. Mind blowing decision.”

The £50m summer arrival returned to the contest after being treated by medics on the touchline.

Seeing him return to the field, another fan wrote: “I still can’t believe Ugarte has shedded blood and is still on pitch. This is real passion for the club man.”

While a third said: “Fantastic performance from Ugarte on his first start, a few less fouls given away would be good but he’s a warrior.”

And a fourth commented: “Ugarte just might be him.”

Ugarte put in a solid 63 minutes of work before being replaced by Bruno Fernandes.

United put Barnsley to the sword on a tough night for the League One outfit.

Backed by 6,500 vocal fans, the South Yorkshire side held out for just 16 minutes before the floodgates opened.

Marcus Rashford got things started for the home side, bagging in back-to-back matches for the first time since March.

Anthony and Alejandro Garnacho made it 3-0 before half time, with Eric Ten Hag’s men refusing to slow down the intensity.

Garnacho and Rashford added another goal apiece after the break, before Christian Eriksen netted twice off the bench to complete the rout.
