Alan Titchmarsh reveals the reason your pond looks like ‘pea soup’ & how to revive it this autumn

ALAN Titchmarsh has revealed how to get your grubby green pond looking fabulous, with barely any faff at all.

According to the gardening pro, if your pond looked like ‘pea soup’ in summer, there’s a few simple steps you can take to revive it this autumn.

Sharing his advice on the BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Podcast, during a Tea-Break Tutorial on pond care, Alan Titchmarsh, 75, revealed why you should get a pond in your garden if you don’t have one already.

He explained: “The great thing about ponds in gardens is they bring so much to the party.

“Reflection, they bring the sky down to the ground and light comes into the garden, unless of course it’s tipping it down and then if it is, you get movement on the surface.

“Watching raindrops fall on a pond is a lovely way of wasting time. I love doing it. I sit doing it when I write my pieces for Gardeners’ World magazine, looking out of a window that has a wildlife pond immediately outside it. I can’t tell you how much time I waste looking at what’s going on.

“You’ll encourage wildlife. It really is worth having one.”

The gardening expert and broadcaster, revealed the reason why ponds often go discoloured in summer.

He continued: “The easiest ponds to look after are larger ones. If a pond is very small, in summer, it tends to heat up like a saucepan of water and that’s when it goes green and looks like pea soup.

“So if you can make your pond as big as possible, you’ll have a body of water which doesn’t heat up quite as rapidly as one that is tiny and shallow.

“And if you’ve got an edge that is gradual, that will mean that amphibians – frogs, toads and newts – can come in for a drink and get in and out safely, without falling in and being unable to get out.

“Starting in winter, when the plants have died down around the edge, it’s pond tidying time.

“Don’t be too tidy around the edge of your pond – frogs and toads tend to come out of the water and find somewhere cosy to burrow a little bit, so be a little big ginger about what you do cut down.

“As spring comes, that’s when, particularly with new ponds, they tend to heat up and the water might go green.”

Will my garden plants still grow if my backyard doesn’t receive any sun?

In order to stop your pond from going a nasty shade of green, Alan revealed the plant that you’ll need to nab.

He advised: “The key is to make sure you’ve got plenty of submerged oxygenating plants in there, not just Canadian pond weed which is very rampant. It’s good, but it’s rampant, so thin it out a bit if you’ve got too much of it.

“It will make sure there’s plenty of oxygen in the water, which is not only good for water wildlife but good for keeping the water clear.”

Do get a pond. You’ll find that pond care is easier than you think

Alan Titchmarsh

Not only this, but Alan suggested why a net could be the solution to keeping your pond looking fresh, as he highlighted: “Then of course you get to autumn, and that’s when the leaves come down.

“This is why it’s important to site a pond away from overhanging branches of trees. They’ll float on the surface and sink to the bottom and encourage a build-up of silt.

September gardening jobs

With September starting, so does autumn, and The Sun's Gardening Editor Veronica Lorraine has a few tasks to keep you busy as the summer sun winds down.

1. Starting thinking about Spring bulbs

Its early bulb time! As well as the more traditional daffodils, crocuses, alliums and bluebells, try snake-head fratillaries for something slightly different.

2. Remember the bees

Make sure you’re still looking after the bees with autumn flowering pollinators – like sedums, honeysuckle and asters.

3. Dig and enjoy your potatoes

Maincrop potatoes are ready to dig up – make sure you get them all so they don’t get slug damage.

4. Change your lawn mowing schedule

Raise the height of your lawn mower and start to reduce the amount of mowing you do. GIve it an autumn feed, especially if you didn’t get round to it in Summer and start to rake to remove thatch.

5. Plant out new perennials while the soil is still warm.

6. Take salvia cuttings

It’s as easy as cutting a shoot tip above a  node and chucking it in a glass of water to see if it sprouts roots. Especially with tender Salvias which wont survive the winter.

7. Keep camelias well watered to make sure that buds form next year.

8. Keep on deadheading and watering your hanging baskets

They should keep going until the first frosts.

9. Get pumpkins Halloween ready

Remove any leaves shading pumpkins to make sure they’ll be ready for halloween – and make sure you keep watering them, they’re very thirsty.

10. Check on your pond

Net your pond to stop it filling with fallen leaves when the trees start to drop.

“If it’s a tiny pond, you can net it during autumn to capture the leaves, but generally speaking, if it’s a large pond, it will cope with the amount of leaves that will fall in it, and you don’t have to worry too much.

“The important thing is that you have a pond which is self-sustaining, a wide range of plants, to give you a season of flowering and to encourage a mass of wildlife that otherwise wouldn’t have ventured close to your garden.”

If you’ve been thinking about getting a pond in your garden, Alan advised: “Do get a pond. You’ll find that pond care is easier than you think.

“You’ll find there’s not a lot of work to do with a pond if you manage it properly.”

Vanessa Feltz returns to TV after being rushed to hospital in pain ‘worse than childbirth’

VANESSA Feltz has returned to TV after being rushed to hospital with pain “worse than childbirth”.

The 62-year-old left fans concerned on Monday when she shared a message from her hospital bed, revealing she was in agony due to a “big” kidney stone.

Vanessa’s hospital dash followed a dramatic day at work last week[/caption]

Yesterday Vanessa appeared The Jeremy Vine Show and opened up about her ill health.

She said: “I was felled by a kidney stone.

“Who knew? One thing, I was absolutely fine making lunch for the grandbabies, having a laugh, hungry, normal, everything.

“And the next minute, the pain was absolutely extraordinary.

“I’ve had natural childbirth twice, I’ve got some idea of pain, but this was remarkable. Actually remarkable. Anyway, in the end, I had to be nuked with a laser.”

Host Jeremy, 59, questioned why doctors didn’t allow the kidney stone to pass naturally.

Vanessa replied: “It was too big, it turned out. They scanned it, it was five millimetres, just a bit more than that.

“When they said, ‘If it’s over five millimetres, we’ll have to operate,’ I was praying, please let it be over five millimetres. Please let them operate because I couldn’t bear the thought of suffering through it any longer. I’m delighted to be here, I can’t tell you.”

Kidney stones are masses made of salt and minerals, and can be anywhere between a grain of salt and a golf ball in size.

There are several different types – calcium stones, struvite stones, uric acid stones and cystine stones.

The stones have potential to cause severe pain, and while most pass on their own through the ureter – the tube between the kidney and the bladder – some need to be surgically removed.

It’s been a dramatic few days for Vanessa.

Last week she was sitting in for Storm Huntley on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show when a fire alarm caused the entire building to be evacuated.

The former Celebrity Big Brother star took to her social media as a pre-recorded programme was put on the airwaves in its place.

“Oh for goodness sake a fire alarm!” she exclaimed on her Instagram story.

“Nobody knows if it’s real or pretend, but we think it’s real because there’s an actual fire engine and the building has been evacuated.”

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are a common and usually very painful condition.

They usually affect people between the ages of 30 to 60, the NHS says.

It adds: “They can be extremely painful, and can lead to kidney infections or the kidney not working properly if left untreated.”

How can you tell if you have a kidney stone?

  • You have a pain in the side of the tummy
  • You have severe pain that comes and goes
  • You feel sick or are vomiting

Call NHS 111 or a GP if you have severe pain, a high temperature, an episode of shivering or shaking or blood in the urine.

Kidney stones form from chemicals in the urine.

Some are as small as a grain of sand and are passed in the urine without you noticing. Others can be as large as a pebble.

Causes of kidney stones are:

  • Drinking too little water
  • Too much or too little exercise
  • Obesity
  • Weight loss surgery
  • Eating food with too much salt or sugar

Many kidney stones can be treated at home by drinking lots of water, using pain relief and waiting for the stones to pass.

Large kidney stones need to be removed by surgery, in which various methods are used to break the kidney stone into smaller pieces so that they can pass in the urine.

Some surgeries are done under anaesthetic while others are not

Iran vows revenge for pager blitz as Israel stands on brink of WAR with Lebanon
& Hezbollah fear what might blow up next

IRAN has vowed revenge for Israel’s double sabotage blitz as its proxy Hezbollah has been left reeling by the surprise attack.

Israel has seized the initiative and moved thousands of troops to the north of the country as analysts believe it could be set to invade Lebanon.

Iran has now pledged revenge following the sabotage[/caption] a poster titled pager sabotage shows a map of the world

Thousands have been left injured and at least 32 dead in two sabotage strikes that has left victims with missing eyes, fingers, and chunks blown out of legs.

Iran has hit back at the country and accused Israel of “mass murder”, describing Tuesday’s surprise pager attack as “terrorism”.

The Islamic Republic has threatened Israel saying it: “reserves its rights under international law to take required measures deemed necessary to respond.”

Tehran’s ambassador lost an eye in the hit and has been flown back to the country for treatment.

Israel has also revealed today to have foiled an Iranian plot to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Defence Minister.

Israeli spies’ targeted proxy Hezbollah which was also hammered in a second sabotage strike Wednesday that hit walkie-talkies.

The terror group has sent its own chilling threat, telling Israel to expect “fair punishment”.

Analysts now fear Israel could be setting the groundwork for an invasion of Lebanon as it seeks to defeat Hezbollah.

The Saudi ambassador to the UK said Wednesday night the Middle East is the closest its been to a regional war since the 1970s.

Prince Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud told Sky News the region is “moving further and further away from where we need to be.”

Beirut locals have been left fearing any electronics could explode and are taking precautions like getting fire extinguishers for their home.

Journalist Hassan Harfoush told the Daily Mail: “Beirut has collapsed into panic. The WhatsApp groups are going non-stop.

“There are wild rumours doing the rounds that solar panels might explode, batteries, fridges – anything.”

Harfoush said that the explosions had caused “fear and carnage” to spread across the city.

He said: “We’re all really scared; there is no safe place any more. Everyone knows what these explosions can do.

“In a Beirut hospital, I saw a man whose flesh had been torn from his face, the bones gruesomely visible. He was still conscious.”

Shocking footage shows the moment a device blows up just centimetres away from a man working in a Lebanese phone shop.

New footage shows the two workers in a phone shop jumping back as a white smartphone explodes just centimetres from them.

The device bursts into flames and flies across the room making the workers slide back in their chairs to avoid being hit.

The explosion in Beirut happened during Israel’s second surprise strike yesterday after a wave of remote-controlled pager blasts on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, a second wave of explosions ripped across Lebanon killing 20 and injuring 450 as a series of walkie-talkies detonated.

The sabotage also hit other types of electronics with phones, solar energy systems and fingerprint reading devices all blowing up.

One of the latest explosions struck a Hezbollah funeral for a child and three militants who were killed on Tuesday.

Israel has yet to officially claim responsibility for the deadly double-tap hack but it has deployed troops to the northern border with Lebanon.

The device blasts will further stoke tensions in the Middle East in what officials fear could be a “pre-emptive strike” ahead of a wider escalation.

Defence minister Yoav Gallant declared the start of a “new phase” of war on Wednesday and praised the work of Israeli security agents as “very impressive” after IDF troops began moving north.

Gallant said: “The centre of gravity is moving north. We are diverting forces, resources, and energy toward the north.”

His announcement came as it was revealed the IDF’s crack 98th Division was being redeployed to northern Israel after fighting for months in Gaza.

The division is made up of Israel’s most hardened combat troops and commandos specialising in taking and holding ground.

Experts say their arrival is the clearest sign yet that PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s pledge to create a buffer zone in southern Lebanon could be under way.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Wednesday to return all evacuated citizens to the northern border areas.

Local reports said a number of wireless devices exploded in Baalbek, northeast of Lebanon capital Beirut, after their owners threw them into the streets on Wednesday evening.

Solar equipment, fingerprint devices and radios also reportedly exploded in the city and other parts of Lebanon.

The White House said it is too soon to tell whether the explosions will affect ongoing ceasefire talks in Gaza.

Analysts believe the new attack was the second phase or an Israeli masterplan to paralyse their Lebanese enemy’s communication before launching a massive attack.

Where did the pagers come from?

By James Halpin, Foreign News Reporter

Iranian proxy Hezbollah ordered the pagers months ago but never thought the quaint piece of tech could be tampered with.

Hezbollah shifted to pagers after the group’s leader told members to stop using phones in February over fears they could be tracked by Israeli spies.

A senior Lebanese security source said the group had ordered 5,000 beepers made by Taiwan-based Gold Apollo, which were brought into the country in the spring.

But Gold Apollo told media in Taipei today the specific order was manufactured by BAC Consulting KFT in Budapest.

Gold Apollo boss Hsu Ching-kuang said BAC asked to manufacture their own pagers with the company’s trademark and they were paid from a mystery Middle Eastern bank account, NPR reports.

BAC Consulting chief executive Cristiana BĂĄrsony-Arcidiacono confirmed to media that her company worked with Gold Apollo.

But said, “I don’t make the pagers. I am just the intermediate.”

At some point during the manufacture, the devices were modified by Israel’s spy service with a small amount of explosive.

The AR-924 pager is described as being “rugged” and contains a rechargeable lithium battery with 85 days of battery life.

Their longevity would be important in Lebanon which has suffered major power outages.

Pagers also run on a different wireless network than mobile phones, making them more resilient in emergencies and harder for Israel to hack digitally.

The affected pagers were only delivered to Hezbollah recently, but other associates of the group were also injured, including the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon.

EastEnders fans demand to see ‘missing’ storyline happening off-camera after spotting gripping clue

EASTENDERS fans have demanded to see a ‘missing’ storyline that apparently happened off-camera.

BBC viewers have tuned in to watch the latest action of the love triangle between Bobby Beale, Gina Knight, and Freddie Slater.

Some fans think writers use rejected storyline ideas for the paper[/caption]

However, another plot point has seemingly gripped enthusiasts of the chronicles of Albert Square.

EastEnders has its own fictional newspaper called the Walford Gazette.

Recently, a reporter even approached Reiss (Jonny Freeman) who is trying to free his fiance Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) from prison.

The journalistic institution often sells copies of the publication at the market complete with headline news stands.

EastEnders fans have noticed some bold headlines about the apparent behind-the-scenes goings on in Walford.

Recent headlines have included, ‘Raccoon sold as puppy’ and ‘Tunstall caught with rent boy’.

Viewers have been somewhat distracted by the audacious headlines and have taken to social media to demand to see more of them actually shown on-screen.

Some think bosses even use rejected storylines suggested behind the scenes for the fictional paper as they wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Posting a snap of the most recent headline, one fan wrote: “I want a storyline about a journalist at the Walford Gazette or East London Gazette – particularly one involving a raccoon sold as a puppy.”

While a second fan claimed: “I’m beginning to think that #EastEnders uses rejected storylines for the Walford Gazette splash outside the MiniMart.”

They added: “The other week it was “Family kitten sold on dark web”, now a raccoon!”

Back in August one fan noticed the headline, ‘Boy sells family cat on the dark web’.

They posted: “Hey @bbceastenders I want to know more about this storyline headlined in The Walford Gazette! Who was it, Arthur or Mica?!”

EastEnders fans left convinced another huge character will return this week as Bobby Beale’s exit looms

EASTENDERS fans are certain an iconic character will return amid Bobby Beale’s impending exit.

Viewers already know actor Clay Milner Russell is departing the BBC soap after five years playing Bobby.

Jane previously made a shock return earlier this year[/caption]

Ahead of the character’s exit, however, fans are convinced show bosses will bring back his adoptive mum Jane Beale (Laurie Metcalfe).

Their suspicions come after Bobby referenced Jane in last night’s episode.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one person wrote: “I could stay with my mum” please say Jane returning again and Bobby goes to live with her IS his exit. It would be the perfect ending.”

Another penned: “I hope Jane comes back tomorrow for Bobby’s exit. Otherwise the forgiving scenes they shared would be pointless.”

They later added: “JANE MENTION! SHE HAS TO COME BACK TOMORROW FOR BOBBY’S EXIT!!!!!”.

While another viewer remarked: “Jane mention! BRING HER BACK I BEG #EastEnders.”

Jane previously made a surprise return earlier in the year, which saw her reunite with Bobby, ex-husband Ian (Adam Woodyatt) and former stepson Peter (Thomas Law)

She also met Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) and George Knight (Colin Salmon) for the first time.

The soap meanwhile hinted Jane had reunited with ex-partner Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra) off-screen.

As for Bobby, he’s currently going through a tough time in Walford, after finding his best mate Freddie (Bobby Brazier) and girlfriend Anna (Molly Rainford) kissing.

With the pair having slept together previously, Bobby was enraged after assuming they’d gone behind his back again.

To make matters worse, he had also deduced Anna’s pregnancy – which she’d been keeping a secret – leaving Bobby questioning if Freddie was the father.

Fans have not held back in their opinions of the love triangle storyline, as one wrote: “Can’t take much more of this Freddie/Anna/Bobby love triangle.”

Another fumed:  “Ruining the show! Abysmal abysmal abysmal!

Best soap affair love triangles

LOVE triangles are a fundamental part of soap-land, but which ones have become the most iconic?

EASTENDERS

Bradley/Stacey/Max: Stacey Slater began an affair with boyfriend Bradley Branning’s dad Max in 2007.

Despite their romps, Stacey still married Bradley, but their deceit came out in an iconic Christmas Day episode that year.

Grant/Sharon/Phil: Heading even further back in Walford history, EastEnders fans were gripped in the 90s as Sharon Watts had a one-night stand with her brother-in-law Phil Mitchell.

Sharon confided in best friend Michelle Fowler – not realising it was caught on tape – and her husband Grant eventually found out and played it in front of everyone at the Queen Vic.

Syed/Amira/Christian: Syed Masood was engaged to Amira before realising he had feelings for another man, Christian, which he confessed to him on his wedding day.

A devout Muslim, Syed refused to admit his true sexuality and went ahead and married Amira anyway, but when they returned, the two men started an affair before being caught in the act by Amira.

CORONATION STREET

Shelley/Peter/Lucy: Peter Barlow took the concept of a love triangle and ran with it in Coronation Street – extending it to bigamy.

He was in a relationship with Shelley Unwin but started dating Lucy Richards, and quickly married her after she fell pregnant with his son, Simon.

But it didn’t stop him also marrying Shelley, but he was eventually caught when Lucy turned up in Weatherfield and the two women confronted him.

Ken/Deidre/Mike: Back in 1982, Deirdre Barlow started sleeping with her husband’s nemesis Mike Baldwin in secret, before confessing all a year later.

When Mike turned up at the marital home, Deirdre was being throttled by her husband who then kicked her out, but years later they reconciled.

Maria/Aidan/Eva: In 2017, Aidan Connor started sleeping with girlfriend Eva Price’s best friend, Maria Connor.

Eva eventually found out and she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy, spending his money and planned to confront him on their wedding day.

But she had a change of heart when a remorseful Aidan confessed, and decided to marry him anyway, only for Maria to arrive and expose her fake pregnancy.

EMMERDALE

Ross/Debbie/Pete: Debbie Dingle found herself torn between two brothers, Ross and Pete Barton in 2015 in Emmerdale.

She eventually decided to marry Pete but yet again, a soap wedding day was ruined when the groom learned of his bride’s betrayal via a recording played at the wedding.

Chrissie/Robert/Aaron: Robert Sugden was married to Chrissie White and all seemed well – until he began a steamy affair with Aaron Dingle.

Robert’s ex Katie Sugden almost exposed the affair – but fell to her death before she had the chance.

However, a guilty Aaron eventually cracked and told Chrissie about the affair – after which she announced it to the whole pub.

“Blend these two together and Hollyoaks actors are still superior- it hurts my heart to exclaim such words about the mighty Eastenders! Viva la axe.”

A third penned: “I don’t believe anyone is remotely interested in this Anna, Freddie and Bobby nonsense.”

Will Bobby’s storyline have a happy ending, or end in heartbreak?

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on iPlayer.
