An episode of Countdown aired later than expected[/caption]

It saw an episode of Countdown air almost an hour after the scheduled time.

A confused fan penned on social media: “What’s up with @Channel4 this morning?

“Listings had @C4Countdown at 05:45, but it was partway into some property programme then (not even Cheers, the programme scheduled before Countdown).

“It eventually started about 50 min later, with no explanation.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, the broadcaster explained: “Hey – due to a technical issue, #Countdown started later than usual yesterday morning on #Channel4.

“Episodes of #Cheers were removed so the schedule could get back on track.

“Apologies for any inconvenience.”

It is not the first time the numbers and letters show has faced technical setbacks.

On one occasion, an episode was cancelled in a last minute change, leaving baffled fans desperate for answers.

Taking to Twitter at the time, one fan wrote: “Was #countdown not on channel 4 today?”

Another fumed: “@C4Countdown Why aren’t you on at the moment?

“The TV guide says you’re on but it’s some Flog It show or something……. #Countdown.”

Channel 4 later explained: “We’ve experienced temporary technical issues related to the new operating process that was put in place after the outage.

“We are working to rectify it as quickly as possible but can confirm that the peak schedule is unaffected.”

Having launched in 1982, Countdown has been on viewers’ screens for over four decades.

Countdown hosts over the years

Since launching in 1982, Channel 4 game show Countdown has become a staple of daytime telly. There have been several presenters throughout the show's long history. Let's take a look back at who has hosted the iconic show.

  • Richard Whiteley (1982-2005): The original and longest-serving host, Richard helmed the programme for 23 years. As Countdown was the launch programme for Channel 4, the presenter and journalist was the first person to be seen on the channel. He died in 2005 at the age of 61.
  • Des Lynam (2005-2006): Originally from County Clare in Ireland, Des took over from Richard Whiteley after his death. He is known for hosting TV coverage of several sporting events including Wimbledon and the Grand National. He left the show after less than 18 months.
  • Des O’Connor (2007-2008): Another Des was next up, in the form of comedian and presenter Des O’Connor. The long-time TV chat show host was known for The Des O’Connor Show and Take Your Pick. He left Countdown to focus on entertainment projects. Des O’Connor died in 2020, aged 88.
  • Jeff Stelling (2009-2011): Known for his work presenting Gillette Soccer Saturday, Jeff became the fourth host of Countdown. He had reportedly previously been in consideration to replace Richard Whiteley. He left after three years to focus on football coverage.
  • Nick Hewer (2012-2021): Former public relations consultant Nick was one of Lord Sugar’s advisors for 10 years on The Apprentice. He became the new host of Countdown in 2012, appearing on both shows for two years. He ultimately left Countdown after nine years.
  • Anne Robinson (2021-2022): Best known as the original host of The Weakest Link, in 2021 Anne became the first female Countdown presenter. She left the programme a year later, having recorded 265 episodes.
  • Colin Murray (2022-present): Before being named the permanent Countdown host, Colin Murray had been appearing on a guest basis since 2020. He returned to the show following Anne Robinson’s departure.

The comedy spin-off 8  Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown began airing back in 2012.

Originally intended as a one-off crossover, a total of 26 series have aired to date.

Hosted by Jimmy Carr, it sees Rachel Riley and Susie Dent return in their regular show roles.

Countdown airs on Channel 4.

How Mohamed Al Fayed used ‘royal palace’ featured in The Crown to ‘rape and prey on victims’

MOHAMED Al Fayed has been accused of using a royal palace featured in The Crown to rape and sexually assault victims.

Five women have alleged they were raped by the Egyptian billionaire, who died last year aged 94, and a further 20 female employees claim Al Fayed sexually assaulted them across multiple locations.

The new documentary – called Al Fayed: Predator at Harrods – hears claims from women who worked at Harrods from the late 1980s to 2000s, after an investigation by the BBC.

Female employees allege that assaults were carried out at different locations, including the company’s offices, in Al Fayed’s London apartment, or on foreign trips often in Paris at the Ritz hotel.

And multiple women have even claimed that the billionaire raped or sexually assaulted them at “Villa Windsor” in Paris’s Bois de Boulogne.

The lavish 14-room mansion was the home of post-abdication King Edward VIII and his wife Wallis Simpson.

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s luxurious French property recently featured on The Crown’s third season.

Al Fayed took out a 50-year lease on the 14-room, 19th century villa and the Egyptian billionaire would go on to rename it the “Villa Windsor” after completing a £10.4 million restoration back in 1990.

Now, one woman named Gemma – who worked as one of his personal assistants between 2007 and 2009 – has claimed Al Fayed raped her at the historic Parisian villa.

Gemma described waking up to find him attempting to get into bed with her, adding: “I told him, “No, I don’t want you to”.

“And he proceeded to just keep trying to get in the bed, at which point he was kind of on top of me and [I] really couldn’t move anywhere.

“I was kind of face down on the bed and he just pressed himself on me.”

She told the BBC that after the Harrods tycoon raped her she cried, while he got up and told her aggressively to wash herself with Dettol.

“Obviously he wanted me to erase any trace of him being anywhere near me,” she explains.

Al Fayed – whose son Dodi was killed in a car crash alongside Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1997 – has become known to a new generation through the two most recent Netflix series of The Crown.

But another alleged victim has claimed that his portrayal as pleasant and gregarious was far from the truth.

Speaking to the BBC, Sophia, who worked as his personal assistant from 1988 to 1991, said Al Fayed tried to rape her more than once.

One of those attempts took place at the Villa Windsor where the Egyptian billionaire allegedly tried to force himself on her.

Sophia claims she had to kick and scream for him to get off.

She said: “He was vile.”

Speaking about his portrayal in the Crown, she said: “That makes me angry, people shouldn’t remember him like that. It’s not how he was.”

The lavish interior of “Villa Windsor” boasted 14-rooms of the highest quality, and had a unique aristocratic style.

Designed by legendary interior designer Stephane Boudin, Wallis Simpson soon put her own stamp on the property.

This included intricate eighteenth-century panelling and “Wallis blue” – a shade invented in 1937 for the Duchess herself, reports Town and Country.

And the ornate mansion was also host to paint framed treasures like a Venetian Rococo console table and Japanese screen, purported to be a gift from Emperor Hirohito.

The impressive property is adorned with porcelain, polished wood and leather and vintage chandeliers.

The stunning mansion was location for many dinner parties with famous guests such as Marlene Dietrich, Aristotle Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and the Aga Khan.

Elsewhere in the third episode of The Crown, Mohamed Al Fayed is shown buying the Duke and Duchess of Windsor’s French home after Wallis Simpson died in 1986.

In real life, Al Fayed did take out a 50-year lease on the 14-room, 19th century villa with the intention of turning it into a museum dedicated to the former King and his wife.

Following the allegations against Al Fayed, Harrods said in a statement to the BBC: “The Harrods of today is a very different organisation to the one owned and controlled by Al Fayed between 1985 and 2010.

“It is one that seeks to put the welfare of our employees at the heart of everything we do.

“Since new information came to light in 2023 about historic allegations of sexual abuse by Al Fayed, it has been our priority to settle claims in the quickest way possible.

“This process is still available for any current or former Harrods employees.

“While we cannot undo the past, we have been determined to do the right thing as an organisation, driven by the values we hold today, while ensuring that such behaviour can never be repeated in the future.”

Who was Mohamed Al Fayed?

MOHAMED AL FAYED was best known as the owner of luxury department store Harrods and father of Princess Diana's boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed.

The billionaire died in August 2023 at the age of 94, almost 26 years to the day after the passing of his son.

Heini Wathen married Mohamed Al-Fayed in 1985 and the couple went on to have four children together; Jasmine, Karim, Camilla and Omar.

Heini and Mohamed’s romance began after they were introduced by Mohamed’s son Dodi.

The couple are portrayed by Hanna Alström and Salim Daw in the sixth and final season of Netflix‘s The Crown.

Before marrying Heini, Mohamed had been wed once before.

In 1954 he tied the knot with Saudi Arabian author Samira Khashoggi.

The pair split after two years but welcomed son Dodi together in 1955.

Dodi is Samira and Mohamed’s only child, but Mohamed went on to have four more kids with his second wife.

Prior to his death, Mohamed lived in a house near Oxted with his wife Heini.

The family estate in Surrey, named Barrow Green Court, is where both Mohamed and his son Dodi are buried.

His eldest son – Dodi – was killed alongside Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997.

Little-known car brand to launch in the UK with first EV coming within months to undercut BMW

A LITTLE-known car brand is set to launch in the UK next year – and they’re ready to take on the might of BMW.

Chinese EV firm Avatr is readying its UK launch by the end of 2025.

Chinese EV firm Avatr will likely star selling a stylish new SUV by the end of 2025[/caption]

Avatr – which is a joint venture between battery specialist CATL, carmaker Changan and tech giants Huawei – has already launched its first right-hand drive model in Thailand.

Called the ‘11’ SUV, it’s similar in size to the BMW X5 and it is likely to be Avatr’s first EV to be released in the UK.

In Thailand, it will be sold with a 90.4kWh battery with a 245-mile range, priced at the UK equivalent of £47,729, alongside a 116.8kWh model with a 420-mile range priced at £52,307.

The 11 is based on Changan’s ‘EP1’ EV platform, which is a four-wheel-drive SUV powered by two Huawei-developed electric motors – capable of generating 570bhp.

Alongside the 11 SUV, Avatr plans to produce a ‘12’ saloon and smaller ‘7’ SUV in Thailand, with assemblies shipped from China.

Brand president Chen Zhuo said: “We’re confident that we can build Thailand into a bridgehead for Avatr’s globalisation strategy.

“We will expand into other south-east Asian countries and the global right-hand-drive market.”

Avatr have already laid foundations for a global expansion, including into the UK, with a design studio setup in Munich, Germany, with parent firm Changan already boasting a sales and marketing base in the city.

What’s more, Changan has increased its research and development presence in the UK through an engineering centre in Birmingham.

This comes as we revealed earlier this month that another Chinese firm called Omoda is entering the UK with two incredibly low-priced models.

Omoda will launch their Omoda 5 model at just £25,235 for the most basic model, and that increases to £33,055 for the electric iteration, called the E5.

For that price, it appears Omoda is hoping to rival the Kia Sportage and Nissan Qashqai – two massive sellers in the UK – and maybe even the UK’s second-hand market.

Elsewhere, the world’s largest car company is set to release a hot hatch to rival the VW Golf R – after years of fans begging for it to arrive.
