Appalachian State Field Hockey Picks Up Win Against Davidson

The App State Field Hockey team (3-3) defeated the Davidson Wildcats (2-1) on Sunday.

It was a Sunday of firsts, with Florine Koopman and Lise Boekaar scoring their first goals of the season. Koopman and sophomore Sophia Baxter both had multiple goals on the day, both finding the cage twice against the Wildcats.

The Mountaineers scored four goals in the third period, the most in the four-quarter era in App State history.

The first period started off tight, but a goal from Henriette Stegen five minutes in gave the Mountaineers an early lead. Davidson would get their chances, tallying five shots on goal in the period. Koopman would find the back of the cage for the first time this season, giving the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead going into the second.

It was all App State in the second, forcing two corners on top of four shots on goal to Davidson’s zero. Baxter scored her first goal of the game on a penalty stroke at the end of the half, extending the lead to three. The Mountaineers went into halftime with seven shots on goal, leading 3-0.

The third period saw it be an offensive period from both teams, ending the period with six goals combined. Two-thirds of the goals in the period belonged to the Mountaineers, scoring four goals in the period. Boekaar scored the first goal of the second half, and her first of the season. A Boekaar pass to Charlotte Bosma gave the Mountaineers their fifth goal of the game, less than a minute after a Davidson goal on a set piece. Thirty seconds later, Baxter scored her second goal of the day on another penalty corner. Koopman scored her second goal of the game at the end of the period off a rebound, giving the Mountaineers a 7-2 lead going into the fourth.

The Mountaineers held firm in the fourth period, holding the Wildcats to five shots in the period. App State continued to put pressure on Davidson, earning many chances to extend the lead late in the game. The Mountaineers finished today’s game with 16 shots on goal, defeating the Wildcats to a score of 7-2.

The Mountaineers will hit the road to face Ohio on Friday. First touch is slated for noon.
