Anant Chaturdashi is considered to be one of the most important dates in the Hindu calendar and this year it falls on 17 September 2024. Ganesh Visarjan and Puja Lord Vishnu are the two religious processes conducted on this day. Right from the day of Ganeshotsav, marking the beginning of Ganesh Chaturthi, it culminates into a great finale on the Anant Chaturdashi day as devotees splash idols of Ganpati Bappa into water with much fanfare and glory. The festival is continued for ten days, and on this tenth day, the devotees pray for their beloved Ganesha to come back once again the next year.
The last ritualistic worship of Bappa is, in essence, the process of immersion of Bappa in water after offering modaks, sandalwood, and flowers followed by aarti. That process of dipping Bappa in the water has its base in the story associated with Mahabharata and Maharishi Ved Vyas. It is said that Maharishi Ved Vyas asked Lord Ganesha to write the Mahabharata, and Ganesha did the writing for 10 continuous days without taking any rest. He became exhausted from this hard work, and his body became numb, which was cured by immersing him in water. Since then, devotees have been following this tradition till date.
Lord Vishnu is also especially worshipped on this day. According to the legend, the Pandavas faced trouble and were on the verge of a total loss in their game. The Lord Krishna thought that they must continue with the fast of Anant Chaturdashi so that happiness and prosperity can be regained in their lives. Along with worshipping Lord Vishnu on the day, the tying of the Anant Sutra is also part of the tradition. This Anant Sutra consists of wearing a string of 14 knots, signifying the 14 worlds. It is also believed that this wearing of Anant Sutra removes all the obstacles and sufferings in the life of a person.
Thus, Anant Chaturdashi is not only the last day of Ganesh Utsav but also an auspicious occasion to receive infinite grace and blessings from Lord Vishnu.
