UPDATE: 1 in custody, second suspect sought in deadly Williamston shooting

UPDATE (WNCT) – A man is behind bars while Williamston Police search for another man in connection to a fatal shooting last Sunday.

“Through our investigation, we have been able to determine that the victim, Dontrell Bonds, got into an altercation with Tyrene Griffin and Willie Smallwood. Griffin and Smallwood shot Bonds multiple times,” Williamston Police said in a news release to WNCT.

Williamston Police said Griffin, 42, of Jamesville, was taken into custody Friday and charged with an open count of murder.

Warrants have been obtained for Smallwood., 34, of Williamston, but police have been unable to located him. Police said Smallwood should be considered armed and dangerous.

Williamston Police are searching for Willie Lee Smallwood Jr.

Police added that Griffin and Smallwood are brothers.

Anyone with information on Smallwood’s whereabouts should call the Williamston Police Department.

WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — On Sunday, around 1:15 a.m., officers with the Williamston Police Department were near City Café when multiple gunshots came from that area.

Officers were on the scene within seconds after the shots were fired. As everyone left the scene, officers attempted to locate any victims, suspects, or witnesses of the shooting but none were located at the time.

About 30 minutes later, officers and EMS were dispatched to Cherry’s Cupboard outside of Williamston in reference to a person shot. The victim was identified as Dontrell Bonds. Bonds was transported to ECU Health in Greenville where he died.

Officers believe this was a targeted incident. The Williamston Police Department is seeking to question any person that may have information about this investigation.
