Bicyclist dead following collision in East Bay

NEWARK — A 60-year-old bicyclist died early Thursday after being hit by a driver trying to turn a vehicle into a driveway, police said.

The city’s first fatal collision of the year happened about 8:30 a.m. in the 38000 block of Cherry Street, according to city spokesperson Shobna Sharma. Newark police and Alameda County Fire crews responded to the scene and tried to save the man. He died at the scene.

Authorities did not identify him immediately on Thursday, pending notification of relatives. They said he was a resident of Tracy.

According to police, the bicyclist was going south on Cherry Street in the bicycle lane, when the crash happened. A driver making a left turn from northbound Cherry Street in an undisclosed vehicle collided with him, police said.

The driver stayed at the scene and spoke to police. Police did not make an arrest.

Traffic Sgt. Karl Fredstrom is investigating the crash, and police urged anyone with information to contact him at karl.fredstrom@newarkca.gov or 510-578-4974.
