Former head coach to be honored with stadium dedication

(MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo.)—The Manitou Springs School District (MSSD) will dedicate a stadium to a former head coach in early October.

MSSD will dedicate a stadium to Coach George Rykovich, who led the Mustangs for 36 years from 1971 to 2006. During his time, he secured 222 wins, two state championships in 1987 and 1990, and ranked 17th all-time in Colorado state history.

His legacy as a leader and mentor was cemented when he was formally inducted into the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame (CHSAA) on Jan. 2023.

The dedication ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. at the MSSD14 football field. The stadium will be renamed George Rykovich Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, and various community events.

Before the dedication, there will be a pre-game tailgate fundraiser where attendees can enjoy BBQ chicken and beef sandwiches, potato salad, chips, brownies, a veggie tray, soda, and water for just $10. Tailgate tickets can be purchased online.

The tailgate will be held in the Manitou Springs Middle School parking lot at 5:30 p.m.
