Woman shows off her wedding guest dress but gets savaged by others saying it ‘looks like a French maid fantasy costume’

A WOMAN has been savaged for her wedding guest dress, which people have described as looking more like a ‘French maid’s role play costume’.

The young woman explained that she is going to her cousin’s wedding and after losing lots of weight, she wants to wear something short.

The Reddit user confessed that she wants to wear a short frock, but is now having major second thoughts and has this dress as a backup option[/caption]

However, after posting a snap of her dress choice on Reddit, social media users were quick to describe the frock as ‘too short’ and ‘too revealing’.

Posting on the community thread r/Weddingattireapproval under the username @soft_Leadership_5768, the wedding guest shared a picture of her black corset style mini dress, leaving many open-mouthed.

She titled the post ‘Too short? too casual?’ alongside a picture of her in a shop changing room.

She explained: “Going to my cousin’s wedding and the only thing the invitation said was that it was semi formal, no jeans and no white.

“I’ve never been to a wedding as an adult so I have no clue what semi formal is.

“I lost a lot of weight in the last year and I finally feel comfortable wearing shorter dresses so I wanted to go for something that I wouldn’t usually wear, but now I’m second guessing myself.”

The young woman posed in her plunge neckline dress, which has a bow detail and a puff skirt, which she styled with a pair of high, platform style strappy heels.

She then added: “The wedding’s in a week but I have a backup dress if needed.

“I honestly don’t think any of my family will say anything since I’m the youngest and the only girl on this side of the family, so I can get away with pretty much anything.

“But I wanted other people’s opinion just to be sure.”

REDDIT USERS REACT

But Reddit users were gobsmacked by the woman’s wedding guest dress and were keen to share their thoughts in the comments.

Whilst many thought it looked more like a ‘fantasy costume’, others suggested that it wasn’t appropriate and was more suited to a ‘night out with friends’.

I don’t think this is appropriate for a wedding

One person said: “This looks like a French maid’s role play costume. It’s too short. You look great in it though.”

Another added: “The first looks great on you but very costumey and like a maid’s outfit.

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you’re struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here’s a few rules on what not to wear so you don’t get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

“Backup is a bit underwhelming but it’s a great blank slate to accessorise with jewellery, makeup, hairstyle, etc.”

A third commented: “This doesn’t seem appropriate.”

Dos and don’ts of wedding dress codes

By Josie Griffiths, Fabulous deputy editor and bride-to-be.

Josie Griffiths said: I’ll never forget the wedding I went to in October 2022 where a guest wore a white dress.

It was ill-fitting, knee length and looked nothing like an actual wedding dress, but that didn’t stop everyone judging her.

The rules on wedding guest outfits – which are annoyingly loads stricter for women than they are for men – are meant to be about “not upstaging the bride”, which in reality is quite hard to do on someone else’s wedding day.

But if you get it wrong as a guest, you do end up looking a bit silly, and in front of loads of people who don’t know you personally.

It’s just not the occasion for your new white dress, as much as online stores love dumping them in the ‘wedding guest’ section.

I’d avoid anything too tight/short, and ditch super formal gowns unless the dress code calls for them – you don’t want to be in a full length sequin gown at a smart casual event.

Personally I don’t like black dresses either, it isn’t a funeral.

Otherwise you should be pretty safe. Technically wearing red means you’re in love with the groom, but that’s the kind of rule most people would scoff at nowadays.

I do always check what colour the bridesmaids are in, just to be safe, after the Spanish wedding where I watched them walk down the aisle in the exact same dress I’d had in my Asos shopping basket just weeks earlier.

If in doubt, safest to just double check with the bride… but if you’re already doubting your dress that might be all the answer you need.

Someone else agreed: “I don’t think this is appropriate for a wedding. It’s super cute!

“But definitely a night out with friends or a date night outfit and not a wedding outfit.”

Meanwhile, another user chimed in: “I would not wear this to a wedding.

“It’s too revealing in my opinion, looks like something you’d wear on a night out with friends.”
