Tang arrests: Labour inspectors looking for Lee-Ann Liebenberg’s hubby

Businessman Nicky van der Walt restaurant, Tang trended on social media on Wednesday, 18 September when it was reported that arrests were made at his establishment.

The entrepreneur has been married to former Miss SA finalist, Lee-Ann Liebenberg for 13 years.

ARRESTS AT TANG

Sowetan reports that five employees, including a manager, were arrested for working without permits at Tang restaurant in Sandton.

Michael Msiza, who is Gauteng chief inspector said during the raid on Wednesday: “We have arrested four people at the Tang restaurant plus the manager. They [employees] didn’t have proper documents.”

The publication adds that Home Affairs will investigate the identity document of a waiter from Zimbabwe. It states that he was born in SA.

“Home affairs is doubting his ID [and will investigate further],” adds Msiza.

The inspectors on Wednesday also reveal they were also looking for the owner so that they too can be apprehended for hiring undocumented people.

The businessman, Nicky van der Walt opened the Asian restaurant and bar in 2021. 

The South African reached out to Tang owner, Nicky van der Walt on Wednesday, 18 September for a comment.

ARRESTS AT BABEL RESTAURANT

The arrests at Tang restaurant comes after a viral video by Menlyn’s Babel employee who alleged mistreatment at the eatery.

IOL reports that Menlyn’s Babel restaurant and the nearby Ocean Basket owes their workers over R1.3 million in unpaid wages.

The Ministry of Employment and Labour, Minister Nomakhosazana Meth said Babel restaurant owed its employees over R560 000 in unpaid wages.

“An estimated R271,984 for cleaners, and R295,547 for waiters and waitresses.”

It is reported at least three people were arrested during the sting operation. They also found that Babel restaurant is not registered with the Compensation Fund.
