2 juveniles, 11 and 12, charged with making school threats

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) – Two children have been charged with making school threats after a video circulating on social media sparked fear at a Spartanburg middle school.

A release from the Spartanburg Police Department said officers received the first of many concerns related to a video being shared on social media and appearing to threaten Carver Middle School Sunday afternoon.

According to the release, video and photos from an Instagram post showed a suspect wearing a ski mask and brandishing firearms. A photo showed an AR-15 style rifle with the text “Monday 2:30 and Fearmecarver14” on top.

Further investigation showed the post was previously “canned” video from another platform and not a new recording. According to the release, the suspects generated the post with unrelated videos and photographs to suggest an attack at the school.

The police department worked with SLED to identify two suspects and executed a search warrant at a home in Spartanburg Monday.

Officers said a 12-year-old female and an 11-year-old male were charged and issued juvenile summons for breach of peace – high and aggravated nature and student threats.

As a precaution, additional personnel was on-site at Carver Middle as well as Mary H. Wright Elementary, McCracken Middle and Cleveland Academy of Leadership throughout the day Monday.
