Challenger Middle hosts “colonial” recruitment fair

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Students at Challenger Middle School (CMS) hopped aboard a time machine on Tuesday, Sept. 17, to visit the 1600s during their annual Colonial Recruitment Fair.

At the fair, students presented the perks of their colonies based on in-depth research, including costumes and regional snacks, in order to recruit new settlers to join their colonies.

“We’ve been living in chaos for a week and a half, and watching them as they prepare,” said Melissa Loveall, an 8th Grade Social Studies teacher at CMS. “There’s a lot of nerve wracking, ‘oh my gosh are you guys going to get that finished? Do you have what you need? Have you thought about this?’ So then, when we come in here, like it’s almost a relaxing day, because now I see it. You guys figured it out. Good job.”

CMS said these projects are meant to give the students hands-on learning in social studies and English language arts. In addition, students learn about regional cooking for their colonies, treating visitors to drop cookies, Johnny cakes, root beer, and homemade butter.
