‘Such a shame’ say furious Coronation Street fans as they hit out at new Bethany Platt cosmetic surgery storyline

CORONATION Street fans have lashed out at the soap ahead of Bethany Platt’s impending cosmetic surgery horror.

The Weatherfield resident, played by actress Lucy Fallon, will face a health ordeal after undergoing botched cosmetic surgery in Turkey.

But fans have hit out at the plastic surgery plot[/caption]

Fans of the ITV soap opera have seen how Debbie approached Bethany and told her that a friend of hers, who’s the CEO of a cosmetic surgery company, was looking for someone to write an advertorial on their new facility in Turkey.

Amid some worry, Bethany decided to take the opportunity and got ready to jet off abroad for the job.

However, her family will be left shocked when Bethany arrives back having decided to go under the knife herself.

Bethany will have opted to undergo liposuction on the trip but things will quickly go bad as she suffers from complications in the wake of the surgery.

Ahead of the controversial scenes airing, Coronation Street fans have blasted the soap after being left baffled that Bethany would consider going under the knife despite seemingly not having had any hang-ups about the way she looks.

Some viewers have questioned why show bosses have picked Bethany for the surgery storyline as opposed to self-obsessed influencer Daisy Midgeley.

Many felt it would be more appropriate for the looks-focused character to be at the heart of the plot.

Slamming the plot, one fan said online: “I haven’t seen Bethany once care about her looks, this is more of a Daisy storyline.”

Another added: “Bethany has never struck me as vain, they are going to have to create issues with her character to make her insecure before they can do this surely.

“Such a shame when they re write a character to fit a storyline.”

Before a third went on to add: “Since when did Bethany need liposuction??”

In scenes set to be screened next week, Daniel takes a call from a Turkish number.

Daniel breaks the news to Sarah that Bethany is in intensive care and they need to go to Turkey immediately.

Whilst frantically packing a bag for Turkey, Sarah notices her passport has expired.

Darkest soap storylines

Over the years the likes of EastEndersEmmerdale and Coronation Street have all tried to try outdo each other with their outlandish plots in a bid to keep us tuning in each week. But here are some of the darkest that had fans in shock…

  • EastEnders: Tony grooming Whitney (2008-2009) – Tony King first appeared in Albert Square in 2008 as the boyfriend of Bianca, played by Patsy Palmer. But it was quickly revealed he was a paedophile who had been grooming vulnerable Whitney, Bianca’s adopted stepdaughter from a previous relationship, since she was 12. The shocking storyline attracted more than 200 complaints within a week of it beginning. Whitney waited until her 16th birthday to reveal the truth to a horrified Bianca, who called the police.
  • Emmerdale: Holly’s drug addiction and shock death (2010-2016) – In 2010, Holly Barton (played by Sophie Powles) became Emmerdale’s first teenage drug addict. The shocking storyline saw her taking cocaine on a night out before developing a deadly heroin habit. Parents John and Moira desperately tried to help get their daughter clean but when Holly returned in 2016, following a four-year absence, she quickly relapsed. Fans were left stunned and heartbroken when distraught Moira found Holly dead in her bed from a heroin overdose.
  • Hollyoaks: Luke’s rape (2000) – Actor Gary Lucy was just 17 when he took on this groundbreaking storyline, which saw his character Luke Morgan become soap’s first male rape victim. Luke had endured a long-running bullying campaign by football rival Mark Gibbs – who raped him after Luke stood up to him. Luke was left suicidal following the brutal attack, before opening up to his brother Adam. Gibbs was sentenced to eight years in prison. Gary won the Best Actor gong at the British Soap Awards in 2000 for his performance.
  • Coronation Street: Evil Richard Hillman (2001-2003) – Just a mere mention of ‘Richard Hillman’ is enough to send a shiver down the spines of soap fans. He is often ranked one of the most evil soap villains and it’s not hard to see why. The smooth-talking financial adviser bashed his ex-wife Patricia over the head with a shovel. In a bid to keep his mother-in-law Audrey quiet, he set fire to her house. And when Maxine caught him trying to murder Emily Bishop, he took a crowbar to her head. He made his exit from the cobbles in 2003 when he drove Gail Platt, played by Helen Worth, and her family into the canal. They survived, but he didn’t.
  • After being warned that Bethany’s infection is severe, Daniel also informs Sarah that due to issues with travel insurance, Bethany can’t leave the country until her medical bills are paid.

As Bethany regains consciousness, Sarah has to break some life-changing news.

Viewers will see Bethany in a critical condition after contracting sepsis as a result of a botched procedure, leading to her living with a permanent stoma.

The storyline comes as the UK has seen a significant rise in patients seeking corrective treatments from botched cosmetic surgeries performed abroad.

A 2023 study compiled by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons highlighted the number of people needing hospital treatment in the UK after getting cosmetic surgery abroad increased by 94 per cent in three years, with procedures carried out in Turkey accounting for more than three quarters.

The same study also revealed a growing number of people who are returning to the UK with complications ranging from wound healing problems to life-threatening sepsis.

Coronation Street also took the decision to feature a character living with a stoma bag as just over 200,000 people in the UK (1 in 335 of the population) have one.
