Hazardous material spilled in operating room of Ventura County hospital

A hazmat team was sent to a Ventura County hospital to investigate a hazardous spill that occurred in the operating room Tuesday.

The incident was reported around 8 a.m. at St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital at 2309 Antonio Avenue.

“A hazardous materials spill involving approximately half a gallon of formaldehyde has occurred in an operating room,” the Ventura County Fire Department’s public information officer posted on X, formerly Twitter. “Hazmat-trained firefighters are preparing to enter the affected area,” the post read.

No injuries were initially reported as a result of the spill.

The operating room ventilation system is not connected to the rest of the hospital, so there should be no exposure to other patients and staff, the post stated.

There was no word on what caused the spill.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office notified Pleasant Valley School District about the situation.
