Child custody exchange in Richmond results in gunfire

RICHMOND — A child custody exchange ended with a woman fleeing for her life with three children as bullets flew, police said.

The scary encounter happened Saturday about 6:50 p.m.. The woman and the three kids all escaped without injuries, according to a statement from Richmond police. Two of the kids were under 2 years old.

Police said they arrested the man on suspicion of attempted murder, child abuse, possession of a stolen gun, domestic violence and violating a restraining order.

The exchange happened in the 3500 block of Nevin Avenue. Police said it resulted in an argument, and that the man pulled out a gun and began firing.

The woman took off in her vehicle. Police said at least one bullet hit the vehicle.

The man ran from the scene, and police said they found him hiding in the crawl space of a house in the 3600 block of Barrett Avenue with the help of a police dog and a drone. Police said the suspect tossed away his gun and that officers found it later.
